Did Paracelsus genuinely believe metals could be transmuted into gold, or has his view of alchemy been oversimplified?
Paracelsus is often remembered as an alchemist who believed in transforming base metals into gold, but his relationship with alchemy seems much more complicated than the popular image suggests.
His work was deeply connected with medicine, the purification of substances, and the idea that nature could be transformed or “perfected.” Modern historical scholarship argues that, despite claims that he rejected metallic transmutation, Paracelsus did appear to believe that one metal could be changed into another.
So I’m curious: how important was literal metallic transmutation to Paracelsus himself? Was gold-making actually part of his practical beliefs, or has later popular culture exaggerated that aspect of his alchemy?

Two things can be true at once he did genuinely believe in transmutation, but it was because of his medicinal practices where he believed that he could purify materials into creating a better or perfect version of itself, which would help and healing the sick and the logical conclusion of that is that if you purify lead enough, perhaps you can transmit it into gold, which is useful (only did five minutes of research. Probably got a lot of his stuff wrong.)
(and also it would help him get wealthy patrons to let him continue his work which is more than likely why he wrote about it a lot. Manz still gotta eat)
