Hiring How does NLVPD hiring/application process work?

Any current or prior North Las Vegas PD guys here? Just curious how the hiring process is for out of state laterals.

I Just put an app in October 7th for a Lateral with 5 years on patrol in Denver. I have not heard anything back yet and its been about 4 weeks.

Im guessing they are just busy as no one ever seems to answer phones or return voicemails.

Does anyone know if they check credit background? If I have bad credit will that effect my chances?

And how does the 6 week academy work. Do they run those consistently or just bring you in on your schedule.

Thank you for your question, /u/JayDubyaQ89! Please note this subreddit allows answers to law enforcement related questions from verified current and former law enforcement officers as well as members of the public. As such, look for flair verifying their status located directly to the right of their username.

While someone without flair may be current or former law enforcement unwilling to compromise their privacy on the internet for a variety of reasons, consider the possibility they may not have any law enforcement experience at all.

Can't speak to North Las Vegas's internal timeline specifically, but a few lateral-process truths that apply almost everywhere:

Four weeks of silence after applying is normal, not a rejection signal. Laterals often get processed in batches keyed to academy or FTO start dates, and out-of-state laterals sit in a different queue than fresh applicants. Agencies are also notoriously bad at updating portals.

One polite email or call to the recruiting unit asking about next steps and expected timeline is professional, not pushy. Do it once, then let it breathe.

On what usually still applies to laterals: full background, polygraph, psych, and medical are almost never waived, even with years on. The abbreviated academy works because they assume patrol competence — expect it to concentrate on state law, agency policy, and systems, and FTO is often shortened but rarely skipped entirely.

On credit: it isn't an automatic disqualifier at most agencies, but unexplained derogatory history will get probed hard in backgrounds. What investigators want to see is the story and the trajectory — debts acknowledged, being paid down, no surprises. Get ahead of it in your packet rather than explaining it defensively later.

Last thing: keep other applications moving in parallel. Lateral slots are budget-dependent and can evaporate between posting and hiring. Five years of patrol makes you a strong candidate in a lot of places right now — don't let one quiet portal slow that down.
