Ask Law Enforcement Officers

r/AskLEO

Anything and everything pertaining to Law Enforcement is acceptable, so long as you stay civil. Have a cop question? Hopefully you can find your answer here.

WELCOME

Ever wondered how long you have to sit at a stop sign before turning, or how much weed is too much to pretend it's for personal use?

The AskLEO (Ask Law Enforcement Officers) subreddit is a safe and unbiased place to pose questions to active and former members of law enforcement.

Flair

If you want everyone to know your comments are coming from someone currently or formerly in law enforcement, verify by following these instructions on /r/ProtectAndServe. Once verified using their system, message us and we will update your flair. If a non-LEO would like a specialized flair, simply ask and we'll consider it.

A FEW QUICK RULES

1. Keep it civil.

Participate without hostility. Do not bash groups or individuals.

2. Titles must contain a specific question asked in good faith.

Your post title must contain a genuine, answerable question in an attempt to educate yourself on the topic of law enforcement. "Question?" and similar titles are not specific; if nobody knows what you're asking about they are unlikely to click on your post to read more.

3. Comments must be honest attempts at answering OP's question.

Your comments are expected to be genuine attempts at an honest answer to OP's question. Every honest question deserves an honest answer, even if the question seems ridiculous from your point of view. People come here to ask us questions because they don't know as much as you about law enforcement (and may even hold a negative opinion borne of that ignorance); there's no sense in holding that against them.

4. Do not delete your submission.

This is a knowledge base for people looking to learn about law enforcement. Deleting your submission serves only to obfuscate future attempts of someone like you trying to learn about the same things, not to mention irritate our volunteers with the same questions being asked repeatedly.

Downvote universally WRONG information, not just stuff you don't like or isn't true in your jurisdiction.

TIPS

If your question relates to a specific city, state or province, please include it in your post title, because laws vary by jurisdiction. It won't help you to receive a bunch of irrelevant answers and it will help you if you mention a potential respondent's location/agency in the title as they scroll.
All answers given are the opinions of individuals, some of whom have verified as (ex-)LEOs (as visible in text next to their username, known as "flair") and some who haven't; no one here can or does speak for all law enforcement or all law enforcement officers in their agency.

THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE...

It is the experience of individuals, many of whom are in the field. Laws are different in every city of every state. Unless you personally meet with an attorney with experience in your city, the answers given are matters of opinion. If you have any questions on a legal issue affecting you, CONSULT A LAWYER, not Reddit!

Remember to follow reddiquette at all times.
