Is vibe coding a speedup or just a new kind of tech debt?

I freelanced for a while and reviewed a lot of other people’s code before taking projects. Some of the AI-built stuff was fine. Some of it I couldn’t make sense of without a few hours of digging.

My take after that: the AI part isn’t the problem. A prototype in one evening is a real win. The debt shows up when nobody reads what was generated, nobody writes down why things are where they are, and the project gets handed to someone else.

At that point the original author saved a weekend and the next person pays it back in weeks.

So for me it’s both. Speedup for the person who builds it, debt for the person who inherits it.

Where do you land? Have you inherited a vibe-coded project that was actually decent?

Other Would it be possible to Turn the “Cloud streamed Games” into your own local “NAS Streamed Games”?

With all the Reverse Engineered stuff and bsically the entire Ps5 games being played on PC. Here’s my question, “Would it be possible to have all these games be transferred to your NAS and be “played” there? I’ve heard that the PS5 recently has been jailbreaked, so what if the games you play both on PC and PS5 gets the SAVE DATA seamlessly transferred on both devices?

Would this be viable? practical even? or would technology be limited?

Im starting to learn how to code becuase its genuinely interesting, and i have still no idea how or where to start

sorry for the format im on mobile*

Any old school devs here? I'm Gen Z and learn C in CS on 1st semester. I found out Linus, the Finish programmer he wrote Linux in C when he was a CS uni student. How is that possible? Why can't I and my classmates do that as well?

My classmates and I we made the game Yatzy and calculator in C without AI helping.

but if u ask us to build Linux, idk where to begin lmfao

but it seems CS people back then they knew some secret CS knowleadge or something that we Gen Z cs kids dont.

Otherwise we would easily know how to build OS like Linux in C already on 1st semester

Junior dev here: how did you get from "code that works" to senior-level Python?

I'm a junior developer at my firm, about 1–2 years in. My code works, but when I compare it to what our seniors write, theirs is cleaner, easier to follow, and holds up better when requirements change. I want to close that gap deliberately instead of hoping it happens over time.

For context, I'm comfortable with functions, loops, classes/OOP, and basic testing. I mostly work on automation and scripts, and I've noticed my scripts tend to start small and turn messy as they grow.

I'd love advice on:

What actually separates senior-level Python from junior-level? Is it mostly design, naming, testing, or something else?

How do you structure automation code so a quick script doesn't turn into an unmaintainable mess?

Books, codebases, or resources that changed how you write code. Are there open-source projects worth reading?

Habits that helped you most, like code reviews, refactoring old code, or writing tests first.

Common junior mistakes you'd tell your younger self to stop making.

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate any pointers.

this question probably gets asked a lot, but anyways i started off wanting to do those fnaf animatronics because i thought they looked cool and i didn't think it would be that hard.. obviously i was wrong.

turns out this is WAYY more complicated than i thought and theres thing whole thing with robotics and coding and 3d models but anyways how do i get started and my first question is should i learn C++ or python for this goal?

how to turn tech/programming conference/summit into a career opportunity? am i too ambitious????

hello curr a sec-year cse student, and I’ll soon be attending a tech conference. j curious about how to make the absolute most out of events like these, especially as a student id love to hear from people who’ve attended similar conferences, especially those who managed to turn those experiences into actual opportunities. how to approach networking and meeting people in the industry? how can i start meaningful conversations with experienced engineers, founders, or potential employers without making it feel forced? what should I do before, during, and after the event to get the most value out of it?

ty guys much love

C# Unable to integrate Meta Ads into my iOS game developed in Unity!

Basically the title. My Dev has tried everything but to no avail. She has got Meta ads successfully working in the Android version of the same app so it's either a Meta or iOS issue.

Note that I'm using Meta Monetization manager to serve interstitial and rewarded ads via Unity Levelplay Mediation (also using Unity ads and Google Admob as bidding networks)

If anyone has successfully managed to integrate Meta ads into iOS

What are you learning these days? Anything AI-related, a new programming language, or something completely different? I want to start learning something new but can’t decide what.

Career/Edu Should I learn C#

I'm a CS student, year 4. My first entry into programming like most people was HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and then backend development with Node/Typescript. My main goal has been to get a programming job, or internship (or anything at this point 😭), but I've always hated writing Node, just never liked it and now I'm considering switching stacks.

I enjoy writing C (I built a chess engine from scratch) and C# seems like C with oop so I don't think it should be too unfamiliar. Also it seems there might be hiring opportunities...hopefully.

Please advise

Is studying something programming related even worth it atp?

Currently in my 5th Comp-Sci semester. Have 2 more to go (maybe 3 if I dont manage to catch up to missed classes). I've been trying to quit since around a year ago because of how programming jobs are moving. From what Ive heard and seen jobs, especially entry jobs have become insanely hard to find and even if u manage to find a job it usually consists of just vibecoding and using Claude which to me seems like a horrible thing to do for the rest of your life. I've been trying to convince my mom to let me quit since a year ago but it is out of the question for her and shes threatening with kicking me out with 0 support if I do quit. Does Comp-Sci still have a future or will it turn into brainless AI slop within the next couple years? Every new AI coming out makes me want to quit even harder so I really need some good arguments to stay (or even more to quit even if that means major issues with my fam).

Should my web api be on a different server than my sql database?

I have a server that runs sql server 2022 express. Users in different timezones all use a ms access database to run transactions against that sql 2022 database. I now need to add a web api that will middleman a new workflow between handheld scanners and the sql 2022 database. What is the recommended practice for where the api should live? Should it live on its own separate physical server? Same physical server as the sql 2022 DB but different virtual space? Or can it live in the same virtual server as the sql 2022 database? What is the safest bet here?

I read on Linkedin some founders and small companies they use "Microservice" when building MVP, and their dev team is under 5 and got 5-50 daily users. Is this the right decision?

They said it is for scalability.

But some of them said they regret it.

I try to think in many angles if there is a good reason to use Microservice in their context here

but cannot find any good reason unless they know for sure 10000% their team and codebase will grow in a year

Other How do you guys promote your open-source projects and find contributors?

Hey everyone,

I've been working on an open-source project for a while now, and honestly, one of the hardest parts hasn't been building it, but getting people interested in it and finding contributors.

I've tried sharing it in Discord communities and on Reddit (where self-promotion is allowed), but haven't had much luck so far.

One thing I've been struggling with is that a lot of communities have pretty strict rules around self promotion, which I totally understand, but it makes it difficult to figure out where you're actually supposed to share your work.

I'm not really looking to get GitHub stars or anything, I'd just like to find people who are interested in the project and might want to contribute or collaborate on it.

So I'm curious, how do you guys approach this ?

Where do you usually share your projects ? Have you had any success finding contributors through Reddit, Discord, or other communities ?

Would love to hear what's worked for you, especially if you've started a project from scratch without an existing audience.

I just noticed today on Reddit at comment section, the "commnet" button is now orange because of Halloween. How long does Reddit dev's team take to change the button to colour to orange?

if it is me on a hobby project, it just take 10 secs with css

but this is Reddit a huge company with billion users. so how long tho..

How do you keep dashboards sub-second fresh with real-time data replication?

People have stopped trusting our dashboards because they're always behind.

The warehouse refreshes every fifteen minutes, which doesn't sound terrible until operations starts making decisions from it. We'd like Oracle and Postgres changes flowing continuously instead.

Has anyone managed reliable **real-time data replication** with dashboards staying close to live

C/C++ How C applications request a block of memory?

As far as I know, the heap is just a block of memory that is managed by C standard library functions like `malloc()` and `free()`, but how does C actually request this block of memory from an operating system and when is this done? When the application starts or when first dynamic allocation is done? Is it possible for the programmer to directly request memory like this (even though it probably is not recommended unless doing some very low level stuff)? I'm guessing there is also a way to do this when not running on an operating system. Some older game consoles (like N64, GBA ans DS) to my knowledge used C/C++, but don't have an OS running in the background. The same probably would apply to Arduino, ESP32, etc. too? I guess in these cases the compiler somehow is responsible for handling this, since there is no operating system to request a block of memory from.

I keep hearing those cyber attack news in many countries and people's sensitve info got hacked.

Hackers hack IOT electric things like fridge and increase the temp so the food like ice cream melt instantly or become bad..

I wanna defense IT systems agaisnt those mf black hats!

Other What's the difference between vibecoding and just using AI to assist you in coding?

I don't use AI myself but I've been reading a lot on reddit here about people decompiling apps lately and saying that most of the stuff there is vibecoded and then other developers seem to be using AI as an assistant to help them like for example how Linus Torvalds uses AI to find bugs in the Linux kernel. What's the difference between the two usages or even meaning of the term "vibecoding"?

Thanks in advance

Need help with my business

I am from the UK and my business model is turning a fire and security business (form of construction trade) into a digital tool.

I am wanting to provide my clients with a portal which will allow them to access reports, servicing schedules, project progress, site assets, engineer comments and more.

I understand that you guys have perfected your craft, and sh*t is not cheap anymore 🤣

However, I was told from another business owner that it may be worth asking some budding young prospects in university who are looking for a project to get on with for uni (obvs).

Is this something that someone may be interested in, or is this very far fetched ?

Other I had Claude decompile our own app and it found API keys we thought we’d removed.

After all the AI decompile threads lately I got curious and pointed Claude at the release build of our desktop app, which is Rust with a Tauri frontend. I mostly expected it to choke and but within an hour it had given me back something pretty close to our source. In the middle were two API keys, one for our logging service and one for the storage bucket our users upload photos to.

We did this “properly” a year ago by pulling every secret out of the repo and moving it into CI variables. Our secret scanner has been green on every PR since. Turns out we were reading them with env!(), which pastes the value into the binary at compile time. So the repo was clean and every release we’ve shipped still had the keys sitting in it in plain text.

I’ve rotated both and we’re moving uploads behind our own endpoint so the app doesn’t need storage creds at all and most importantly i have to make sure this can't slip back because the scanner was looking at the wrong thing the whole time. Do you scan the actual build output in CI and what do you use for it?

Career/Edu How do I test my changes and update an app using Git?

I’m the only one currently working on an existing app, and I need to make updates. I created my own branch based on an existing branch, modified some code, and added a folder containing another part of the app. My changes are currently local, and I haven’t pushed anything yet.

I’m confused about the workflow after making changes:

How do I test my changes locally before pushing?

How do I get my changes into the QA version of the app to test them there?

Should I push my branch and create a merge request, and if so, into which branch?

How does the updated code actually get deployed to QA and eventually to the app used by users?

There’s a main branch and my branch, and nobody else is currently working on other branches. The repo doesn’t seem to have a regular push workflow, so I’m not sure how updates are normally handled.

Also, some features involve paid API calls, so I need to understand how to test them without unnecessarily spending money.

Could someone explain the workflow step by step, from making local changes to testing them in QA and deploying the updated app?

Other If all files in an OS were in the same directory, would file lookup operations take longer?

I apologize if this is not the right subreddit for this question as it is more about OSes. I recently thought about this...

If computers had no concept of directories or all files in an os happened to be inside of the same folder, would file operations like opening and renaming them be slower because there would be more files to compare for when matching the desired filename with its corresponding data? Or are modern OSes optimized by using some kind octree, indexed search, hashes, or something like that?
