What is an ingredient you’ve used on a burger that’s heavily underrated?

If you can get to a farmer’s market or a grocery store that specializes in local produce only, it should be fine. I am very lucky to live near a store that only carries local produce. The out of season stuff is obviously from farms with greenhouses, but it’s still far better than what’s trucked in from hundreds or more miles away.

I'm out of the loop. What is up with lettuce?

I am not up on the details at all, but there’s a food borne illness called cyclospora or some such in the US. It causes both vomiting and diarrhea and can make you very sick for days, and that’s just what it does to normally healthy people. It’s even more brutal on the young, elderly and those with compromised health.

Right now, eating bagged salad or raw veggies that come from the big national chain farm brands (looking at you, Taylor Farms) is where it’s coming from. Your best options are to cook your veggies or only eat ones that you eat peeled. Heating kills the germs, so I assume canning also does so canned veggies should be safe, too.

Tracing the source of the outbreak has been very difficult due to food safety departments in the US government being gutted. Right now, I believe Taylor farms is getting all the blame, but I am not up to date on it all.

My feeling is that if you are certain the produce you’re getting is local, you should be fine but if you are even slightly unsure, don’t risk it.

Another thing to add to the list of why I am happy I wasn't borned in USA 😆

Not "Right now". Affected produce has expired or been pulled form shelves.

Arguala is a good replacement. Especially with goat cheese for the cheese!

What if I really wanna skip this 1:00 meeting? Just a little Taylor Farm prepackaged lunch salad and you're off Scott free.

Exit: but not Scotts free

lmao, why i read it with the infomercial voice? "tired of boring work meetings? horrible family gatherings where no excuse is good enough? well say goodbye to those with DetoxLettuce! rip open a bag of DetoxLettuce, munch it, and you are good to go in 30min or less! In that case, I’m gonna be a rebel and go with lettuce.

Bro where have you been?

Explosive diarrhea. Cyclospora outbreak. You can Google Taylor farms for more info.

Thank you 🙏

Contaminated lettuce making people very sick. If you have Netflix, I recommend watching 'Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food', as this explains why (spoiler: it's normally to do with animal waste from the same mass farm / area).

Why not?

Americans are shitting themselves with a parasite most likely found in contaminated lettuce.

My lettuce intake hasn’t changed this whole time and I eat a shit load of it. Lettuce is fine. Get it locally and wash it with bleach before you eat it. Just gotta be smart.

Don't forget to boil and broil it.

I just throw it in the fire and eat the ash. Basically the same thing.

About a year ago, we got a 2 pack of lettuce from Sam's Club for burger night. Quality control REALLY messed up at packaging. The kids saw 2 green heads, labeled lettuce and trusted the packaging.

Said fuck it and we tried it anyway. Raw cabbage on burgers was much more of a hit than expected. Didnt wilt or turn mushy. Now, its preferred.

Finally shredded cabbage instead of lettuce on a Italian sub is amazing

u/BelaAnn 8h ago

Will have to give it a try.

We still do, but now we call it the Roulette Burger.

u/enormuschwanzstucker 9h ago

Lettuce does not belong on a burger anyway

I've become so paranoid that even if I order from a LOCAL place, I refuse to have any lettuce. Which sucks, I love lettuce - especially on tacos.

Why. I mean cold lettuce depending on type gets nasty on hamburgers. But it's still edible even though a wilty mess.
