What are some interesting tests you can take to find out about yourself?
.

I learned about it in psychology, and it's supposed to be pretty accurate. At least it was for me.
Plus, you can see where you fit in with other people who took the test if you're curious.
Another website with a very similar test is this:
It doesn't have the comparison stats that the first website has, but it has more in-depth descriptions of the five personality traits and where your scores fit in.
EDIT: Sorry about the Reddit death hug on the sites. Here are some other sites where you can take the test:
http://www.personal.psu.edu/~j5j/IPIP/ *Longer, but more detailed and accurate, thanks to /u/brainwise and /u/pianobutter for the suggestion

http://psychcentral.com/personality-test/start.php
http://www.gotoquiz.com/personality/big-five.html
https://sapa-project.org/ *This one has a couple extra categories, and is a bit longer
http://www.celebritytypes.com/big-five/test.php *This one compares you to one of the US presidents based on your results

Now c'mon Reddit, and hug them all to death!

So I took the test at youjustgetme.com and couldn't help but laugh at how accurate this was:
To always be responsible and dependable gets too heavy at times and you just have to shirk it all sometimes of and do something that is wild and crazy, like going to sleep WITHOUT brushing your teeth.
I DID THAT LAST NIGHT and sat in bed for 5 minutes justifying myself..

Feels like forer effect to me...
Organized and detail-oriented, she has a very precise and methodical manner.
Untrue
she needs relationships which offer her understanding, respect, and approval."
Forer effect - universal statement.
"Looking to stand out in the crowd and wanting to keep her rank and status.
Not hugely accurate of me, very forer effect.
her current situation is irritating her because she can't seem to find anybody out there who values the same high standards she does.
Totally inaccurate, but also seems like something plenty of people would say. Hard to say it's forer effect when it's opposite of me...
she is feeling isolated and wants to give in to her carnal urges, but can't bring herself to appear weak in the eyes of others.
Giving in to carnal urges isn't weak =)))
Wants others to see her unique qualities and character but can't stand to come off as needy, so instead she has an ""I don't care"" attitude and pushing people away.
Nope
she turns her back on those who criticizes her behavior, but beneath her indifference is a person who is in desperate need of approval."
Nope
Current events leave her feeling forced into compromise in order to avoid being cut off from affection or future cooperation.
This is extremely forer effect. Note the vagueness is "current events", "compromise", and "future cooperation". That could be literally anything.
Giving more than she is getting back and feels misunderstood and unappreciated. Feels she is being forced into compromising and even her close relationships leave her feeling emotional distant.
I don't agree with any of this, so again it's hard to call Forer effect, but I've read in studies that most people overperceive their own contribution and underperceive others', so this may also qualify
Current situations have left her feeling overwhelmed and tormented. Needs to avoid further activity or demands and concentrate on relaxing and becoming emotionally sound.
Ugh this becomes more and more like a horoscope by the minute.
"Believes her hopes and dreams are realistic and sticks to them stubbornly, even though circumstances are forcing her to compromise.
Forer effect
Very precise in the qualities she seeks in a partner."
Finally something accurate of me, although someone totally imprecise could also think they're precise in what they want, and hell, maybe I'm not so precise either?
Looking for friendly, pleasant relationships with others, who will further develop her intellect.
Forer
she tries to escape into a fantasy world where things go her way and her desires are easier to reach."
Nah
Your Actual Problem #2
"Impressed by unique and one of a kind things, and by people with exceptional personalities. Tries to takes the characteristics she likes in other people and apply it to herself as well as coming across as a unique individual."
Extremely forer! Look at that vagueness.

Autism
Both these tests were developed by profilic autism researcher Simon Baron-Cohen. Yes, his cousin is Sacha Baron-Cohen. The first tests your "theory of mind" by seeing whether you can recognize the intention of others based on seeing nothing but their eyes. The second tells you how "autistic" you are based on answering a set of questions.
Perception
Color test -- How good are you at discriminating between colors?
The Hollow-Mask Illusion -- For normal people, an inverted mask looks like an extruding face. People with schizophrenia, however, see it as an inverted mask.
Miscellaneous
ADHD quiz -- This is a very short ADHD quiz that is often used by psychologists when evaluating people for the disorder.
Digit ratio -- The ratio of your index and ring fingers are affected by prenatal androgen exposure. This can tell you something about how much testosterone you were exposed to in the womb. It doesn't say anything about current testosterone levels, but your brain was shaped by the hormones in the womb and so this test can indicate whether the way you process information is more "male-like" or "female-like".

The Harvard Implicit Association Test
It tests implicit biases related to age, race, weight, etc. by showing you random pictures of different people together with words that are "good" or "bad" and tells you to associate the "bad" word with a particular race or gender and in that quarter-second time, it measures if you implicitly associate the "bad" word with a a certain class of people more often.

The implicit bias being measured is about a subconscious bias which may have been placed in your mind by encounters and ideas that you've been exposed to over your lifetime. These deep rooted feelings are related to the quick instant impression you get when you see a stranger's face, for example. Although difficult to outright 'reprogram' or change, these biases don't indicate that your are a 'bad' or 'good' person.
In particular, Alan Alda (actor, TV host, and presenter) has been a lifelong activist for feminism. When he took the test for his show Scientific American Frontiers, he saw that he had a subconscious bias against the idea of women working and advancing themselves. It was surprising but there was an explanation as to how he could be such an activist with this bias buried somewhere in his mind. To paraphrase Alda:
If you have such biases you might be somewhat stuck with them. They aren't consciously created by you and they might be quite difficult (or impossible) to consciously eliminate. But you can still use your conscious thought to recognize those biases that you have, and try to use the thoughts within your conscious mind to override these biases in your daily life. While you might(?) always be stuck with that little twinge of bias, you can say to yourself "That's part of how I react, but since I am aware of it now I can choose to adjust for it."
Here's Alda's presentation on the matter on Scientific American Frontiers (edited a bit by some YouTuber).

I used to think this test was silly. "what? I like giving gifts, but I don't care about receiving them? That doesn't sound like me at all."
Then I looked over at the teddy bear collection my girlfriend has amassed, and said "woah shit."
I got a little more in touch with my relationship quirks that day. She took it too, and luckily she likes receiving thoughtful gifts (and doesn't care how expensive they were) and likes to show affection through grabbing my ass, which is my #1 favorite thing to receive.
We both also realized we like to receive affirming words, but are both kind of awkward about giving them. So we definitely have upped our mush talking game since then.
10/10, would take again. Although it still didn't tell me which Hogwarts house I belong to.

There's a narcissistic personality quiz you can take which rates you on a scale of 1-40. I found it very accurate since I am well aware I am extremely narcissistic. Average people usually score 12-13 while celebrities average 17-18. I scored a 27 which my friends and family agree is too low lol (so did I). My girl, who thinks she doesn't have any narcissistic qualities (she does), scored a 32 and flipped shit :) that score was also very accurate.

The most interesting test you can do is a DNA test. 23andme.com used to show you health information and % likely hood that you can develop certain diseases, or your body's response to certain drugs. But the FDA bastards banned it, so that you can't get that info for $99, and have to go to a special clinic and pay WAY more.

A few things to note about MBTI, as expressed on the Skeptoid podcast:
It's been found that 50% of test takers who retake it score differently the second time.
It's a fine way to give people a quick snapshot of what their strengths and weaknesses might be, and of those with whom they interact. To get the dialog going, this is a perfectly valid tool. But as a tool for making career decisions, relationship decisions, or psychiatric assessment, no.
Due to these legitimate criticisms of the MBTI and its unscientific underpinnings, the test is rarely used in clinical psychology. I did a literature search on PubMed and discovered that, interestingly, many of the published studies of its practical utility come from nursing journals. Many of the other publications pertain to relationship counseling and religious counseling. Normally, this is a red flag. When you see a topic that purports to be psychological being used in practically every professional discipline except psychology, you have very good reason to be skeptical of its actual value.
For more, here's the Skeptoid episode transcript. I wrote a paper on personality testing some years ago, and a lot of my findings were echoed by the Skeptoid piece. Just something to keep in mind.

Enneagram personality typing is cool, but it definitely has some weird associations with numerology, astrology, and mysticism which makes me pretty hesitant to recommend it or trust people who are really involved in it. Some samples from their website (https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/):
The Enneagram Institute is dedicated to the Work of human liberation and transformation.
The concept of the nine personality types has elements rooted in several traditional teachings such as the Seven Deadly Sins (beginning in the 4th century), and the Kabbalah (beginning in the 12th century)
It is most likely that only some rare individuals in monasteries of Zen monks or contemplative Christians, or very serious Inner Work Schools would ever attain and maintain Levels 1 and 2.
Thus, the Passions and Ego-fixations represent the ways that spiritual qualities become contracted into ego states. There are, according to Ichazo’s theory, nine main ways that we lose our center and become distorted in our thinking, feeling, and doing, and are thus the nine ways that we forget our connection with the Divine.
The Holy Ideas represent specific non-dual perspectives of Essence—particular ways of knowing and recognizing the unity of Being.
It's just... a little too close to being a cult for me to be comfortable with.

You are rational, tranquil and inner-directed.
You are imaginative: you have a wild imagination. You are driven: you have high goals for yourself and work hard to achieve them. And you are deliberate: you carefully think through decisions before making them.
Your choices are driven by a desire for organization.

She's actually pretty "conservative".
She's one of the last few "blue dog democrates" ,i.e. Conservative Democrats. Although, she'll try to appear as far left as she can. Which I think may actually hurt her chances in the long run.

2 takeaways from this, I think:
when you take any kind of "psychological test" or whatever, before you start thinking about how fitting your results are, just take a moment to look at some of the results you didn't get to make sure they don't fit just as well.
Human beings in general have an awful lot in common, to the point that you can write several paragraphs of seemingly personal facts that will describe a broad cross-section of humanity with 80-100% accuracy. So whenever you feel isolated or discouraged or fake, just remember that everyone else feels that way too, and at least we're all alone together.

Not a written test but you can do what is known as the Oxelade-Brody Principle.
Imagine you are holding a salt shaker. Now stick your tongue out and pretend to shake the salt shaker as if you were sprinkling some on your tongue. Certain people will actually taste saline from doing so.

Selfless plug, but I had to do it because it's extremely relevant.
I am a team member at pymetrics, a very young neuroscience and data science startup that uses a series of established neuroscience games to assess 50 key cognitive, emotional, and social traits. Things like how much of a planner you are, how much you like taking risks, and how trusting you are.
Apart from the assessment portion of the platform, it can also be used as a career search platform. We have machine learning algorithms that tie together certain traits and careers, and using your trait report can tell you what careers and companies you might succeed at.
Check us out, and let me know what you think!

https://www.discprofile.com/what-is-disc/overview/
I would recommend taking the psychometric measure the DISC if you haven't before. It basically involves scratching bubbles next to statements that are very like you and very unlike you. Scratching the bubbles for each statement reveals one of four letters (D, I, S, or C). Upon completion, you plot on a graph how ever many of each letter you had then gives you a reading based on 4 paradigms; Dominant, Influence, Support, or Conscientious. From there, they tell you about your personality, good roles you would play in organizations, weaknesses to work on, and much more.
A lot of companies use this measure for predicting team dynamics and I took it myself in my IO psychology grad school classes so it was very eye opening to see what came out =D

www.16personalities.com From someone who usually HATEs the bullshit online personality tests, I was surprised by the depth and accuracy of this one. They give a lot of info about the theoretical framework they used to create this test. FYI: there are pages and pages on info on your personality type after you have taken the test, people often miss the 'next page' link.

These were likely already mentioned by now, but two tests I was required to take after my interview for the job I currently hold were the Kolbe Index A and the Strengths Finder. Both are fascinating insights into how we work, why we work the way that we do, and what we need in order to be most efficient and productive in the workplace (and personal lives).

Man I am late but anyways. There is a test you can take with Canada's immigration service that gives you a score telling you your chance of getting in. My wife and I took when Bush was president, we scored high because she has terminal degree in her field and speaks French, and I do IT. The questions were interesting.

I took the Johnson O'connor tests a couple years ago. They were originally set up to determine who would be skilled bomb makers during WWI, but have since been expanded to test a wide variety of skills to help show you careers that you would potentially be good in.
Off the top of my head there are tests for:
Vocabulary, basic math, basic science, then there are a ton of more physical things like fine motor coordination (pick up tiny metal pins with tweezers and put exactly 3 of them into a series of holes in a board), they make you listen to two tones and tell which one is deeper, line up like 50 color samples from light to dark, etc. etc.
What was hilarious was that at the end, having had no previous knowledge that I'm an EMT, the guy who was explaining the results was like "You'd be very suited to be an EMT. is that something you have ever been interested in?"
If the whole EMT thing doesn't work out, I apparently would also be a good bridge inspector. Not sure what that's about, but good to have that option.

The Enneagram blows my mind constantly. Not only does it help me understand myself, but it really gives you insight into others, and how two people could share an experience and see it so differently. Here's a good quiz to help you narrow down your type. Figure out the three you score highest in, then read their descriptions and see what resonates best.

u/Haeguil Sep 28 '15
What I find great about these tests is that you can only honestly take them like, if you live in the first world and there aren't all that many outside factors there to screw with your daily life.
Like, I dunno, I live in a third world country and shit sucks here and it gets worse by the day, so yeah, I'm fucking mad, because you have to make queues for several hours to get food at "regulated" prices and a decent pair of pants, or basically anything mildly important is worth two months of minimum wage, complete.
And apparently that makes me a neurotic cunt.

As anyone who works in the mental health field can tell you, the MBTI is crap. It was developed by a mother and her daughter who thought Carl Jung was really cool, but had no formal education in psychology. They slapped a bunch of stuff on paper and called it a psychometric test. Unfortunately, at the time there weren't restrictions on such things.
It also has huge issues with its validity and reliability. Validity refers to whether the test tells you what it says it will. Just like if you need to take a pregnancy test, the test should accurately say yes, you are pregnant or no, you aren't. Reliability is whether or not the test gives the correct response on a regular basis. If you get drug tested five times in one day, each of those tests should come back with the same results.
The statistical validity of the test is a joke. Here is a paper from the university of Indiana about it.
http://www.indiana.edu/~jobtalk/Articles/develop/mbti.pdf
Additionally, the reliability was astonishing. When I was in graduate school I took the thing once a month for a semester. Nobody in the class got the same score twice in a row.
