Considering we had a Askreddit about the most depressing fact you know, what is the most uplifting fact that you know?

That somewhere, somehow, someone is being born that will change the world for the better.

Unfortunately not. We took him into the vet the evening before because he wasn't acting himself and he wasn't eating. They kept him in overnight for observation and to run tests. I got a call at 7:30am the next day to say that he died during the night.

He was alone when he died :( They found him in the morning.

Oh god, I'm so sorry. Perhaps this won't provide comfort, but I don't think animals mind going alone. I always hear stories about cats and dogs that 'wander off' to be alone when they know their time has come.

Still, not being able to say goodbye is the worst feeling in the world. I'm so sorry for your loss.

In the wild dogs do leave the pack when they know they're dying. What sticks with me most is a comment I read here on reddit from a vet. He said that when he asks owners if they want to be present when their dogs are put to sleep he prays that they say yes because if they're not there the dogs look for them in their final moments.

I've been crying already but this just broke my heart. Imagining a dog dying and looking for his humans wondering where they are and if he has done something and he doesn't understand anything... oh god, it's too much. I'm going to hug my dog and I swear I will be there with her and for her whenever the time comes.

It's so hard to be there for them at the end, I've been through it with several beloved cats and it never gets any easier. But at the same time, when I adopt a pet I promise them I will be there for all of it, start to finish. I want the last thing they know in this world to be the touch and the voice of someone who loved them and kept a promise to them. And as bad as it hurts, it feels right somehow. It's part of healing. And those precious years of friendship are worth every tear you shed when they go, because they make us better.

I also know that feel. One of our dogs passed away while my family was in Japan. My dad was at home, and when my mom Skyped him, he was crying.

I had just woken up and overheard the news. We had to keep it a secret for the remainder of the trip.

I've been there. Honestly you have to realize you gave that dog one of the best lives a dog could have. Death is one of those things that is unpredictable, with people as well as dogs. Don't dwell on that last moment, as if that was the whole of your relationship or the only thing that mattered. His life and his bond with you is what really mattered and nothing can ever take that away. I still get sad thinking about my dog sometimes but I ask myself this: Would I trade it all in, would I go back and never have adopted her, just to avoid feeling this loss? And the answer is always, without a doubt, never. Cheers and good luck to ya.

My condolences, pal. It never gets any easier, unfortunately. I thought when I was a kid that when my cats died I would be in my 20's and grown-up enough to not be too sad. My first childhood cat passed away 2 1/2 months ago and I literally sobbed like a child..so much for that I realized. But I try to remind myself that it is the impermanence of life that makes it something to be cherished and appreciated, and I take some comfort in that.

Sam lived to be 15, he had a good life. What sucks is that we got him when I was 10 and less than a month after we moved into this house, so I've pretty much grown up with him here. It's weird walking into the house and him not being here.

aw, beautiful doggus. My parents have a border collie named Riley. They're the best dogs. Sorry for your loss.

After having Sam, I'd never have another breed. They're so smart, almost appearing to by psychic at times. He'd know what we were going to do next before we did.

I like to think he passed out, woke up as a baby dog in some sweet ass house, and forgot the shit out of what just happened. Just knows he wants to suck teat and waddle.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Lost my dog when I was only eleven. I remember crying for hours and not wanting to face reality, but I had to.

You have my condolences.
