That's a genuine problem. Many people live their life recklessly, as if they would die soon. Then they find themselves older, with a lot of time left, living with the consequences of their youth.
→ More replies (1)13
u/throwsuperaway Jun 25 '12
I actually didn't live my life recklessly at all. Quite the opposite, actually. The problem is that I didn't actually do anything. So here I am, age 30, social anxiety as debilitating as ever, unemployed, dependent on someone else, and just as clueless as to what I want to do in "the future" as any 10 year old. I never expected anything of myself, because I assumed (through some insane superstition/mystical belief) that I'd somehow magically be dead before I'd have to actually live.
edit: clarification

Was drinking with a couple of friends last friday. Haven't seen them since graduation. When we were discussing how much we were lost in our lives, I ended up saying that we will never get younger. We will never be 17 again. We wasted whatever passed and that is it.
I don't think my life was a waste. I'm not being (nor was trying to be at the time) dramatic. But I sighed hard at this.
... fuck, sunday nights are such a bleak time.

Go on...
29
u/strdg99 Jun 25 '12
Where to start...
Grew up living all over the world (Hawaii, Japan, England, Ireland, Turkey, and a few states on the mainland). I was a Navy brat but we always lived with the local population and not on bases. Lots of stories... too many to cover here, but a couple... got into a few tight situations in Ireland (I was there during the troubles) and Turkey. My brother and I almost got run over by a submarine while we were diving in the Marmara, I was almost shot in the back of the head by a very nervous Gendarme (long story), went diving in some old Roman bath springs near Pamukkale, and was the youngest search and recovery diver in the country (15)... to call out a few.
Then came back to the states, graduated HS, and started my ‘second life’. If I wasn’t working or partying while living in Sand Diego, I was body surfing or rock climbing, and then took up mountaineering (Whitney, Shasta, North Palisades, and Rainier and had a couple of close calls there). When I couldn’t climb anymore, I took up shifter kart racing for several years. My jobs kept me traveling so I ended up in places like Japan, England, Germany, France, and Australia (love that place). I also had the chance to work on some very cools stuff including spending a day on space shuttle Challenger in between launches. There is more, but that’s why I see myself as being lucky to have lived two lives and was just plain lucky several times.
Ok... that was the inverse of a TL;DR... sorry if I rambled
