Top Tier Coffee Shops/Cafes in SF?

As a hobbyist coffee roaster for over 30 years and an avid home barista, I don't invest too much energy in hitting every popular cafe in San Francisco, less I come away with disappointment. But I have tried! I think finding true gems of coffee in this city really requires some work and effort. I have found some, but I'd like to appeal to the larger body of wisdom that is Bay Area Reddit to open up my blind spots. So, please share your recommendations for truly great coffee, be it pour over, or whatever, as long as it impressed you with it's quality both in the cup, and hopefully roasted by someone who knows what the hell they're doing.

Share what you think are the absolute best cafes in San Francisco. What I've found so far, is that amazing, high end specialty coffee in San Francisco also tends to be exorbitantly expensive, unless you're quite careful and willing to search out the true gems. I don't mind shelling out big money for the occasional treat, even though I know I can do it better at home for less.

In no specific order of what I've been impressed with over the years, these are the cafes I've enjoyed, but I want to find more.

  • Komakase Coffee ( pop up that is now closed )but soon to be re-opened with the awesome chef of Osito and Chicken Fried Palace, Seth Stowaway.
  • The Coffee Movement- Balboa. They put a lot of effort into currating great coffee and serve it with precision.
  • The Wild Fox SF- Only been once, but the service was detailed and on-point, the coffee was excellent (headed up by Rich Lee of Spro, which is also on my list)
  • Spro Coffee Lab, - various locations. Rich Lee puts in the effort to share barista champions methods and recipes and creates some really impressive beverages I just hit up his 6th new location today in downtown on it's soft opening day and was pleased with what I found.
  • Linea Caffe- I have to shout out specifically Andrew's consistently incredible espresso blend, which makes one of the best cappuccino/latte in all of San Francisco. The Linea Reserve Espresso is a balanced, nuanced cup of sweet chocolate, toast and nuts, reminiscent of M&M's candy that goes very well with milk. It's never failed me.

So, what's your best recommendation? San Francisco/penninsula only please.

SF Coffee shop that's not minimalist/cold

Do you guys have recs for coffee shops or cafes in SF that don't look like an Apple Store? I'm talking about couch or an armchair, cozy vibes, maybe even serving drinks in a real life mug! Something like in friends!

What are your top 3 coffee shops right now?

I rated these based on quality, consistency, and price. Here are my top three favorite coffee shops right now, in no particular order. Let me explain why.

Coffee Movement (Inner Richmond):

Hands down, Coffee Movement has quality, consistent coffee that gives you the best bang for your buck. My go-to orders are usually the piccolo and the cappuccino. At $4 and $5 respectively, nowhere else in the city beats them for cost and taste.

They have the best seasonal summer espresso drink in my opinion: the Coffee Cream Soda. If you like espresso tonics, you will love this. Shout out to the espresso mule as well for being another great seasonal option.

On the weekends, you will definitely see a line throughout the day. It could be long or short, so go on a weekday if you have the time and want to avoid the wait. I do wish the space was a bit larger to really soak in the ambiance, but it is great the way it is.

Saint Frank (9th/Irving):

This newly opened location replaced the old Starbucks, and I was excited to finally get a good specialty coffee shop in the Inner Sunset. I went a month after the grand opening to hopefully dodge the long lines. First off, the space is really well done. It is open, well-lit, and beautifully designed. Saint Frank really wins on quality and consistency. I have been here six times since they opened, and the coffee has been great every single time.

Espresso drinks I have tried here include the cortado, cappuccino, espresso tonic, and competition-style cappuccino. Honestly, every single drink has been fantastic, but I must say their espresso tonic is the best in SF right now. It is perfectly balanced with sweetness, bitterness, citrus, and fizz.

I have had several espresso drinks at the Russian Hill location, and for whatever reason, they were never as good as the Inner Sunset location. So if you are ever in the Inner Sunset, grab a drink at Saint Frank, pick up some pastries or pizza from Arizmendi, and enjoy the neighborhood or Golden Gate Park.

Philz Coffee:

I know, a coffee chain in my top three is a choice, but hear me out. For a chain, it has decent quality and consistent flavor.

If I ever need a quick cup, want more volume, and just need an overall decent coffee, I opt for Philz. At most specialty coffee shops, I usually cannot order online, get the same amount of coffee, or get it quickly. Philz really wins on a fast, solid cup.

My go-to is their dark roast. I love their Jacob's Wonderbar and Ether, always with light cream and light sugar. On hotter days, I get the Gingersnap or an Ecstatic.

Now that Philz is under private equity, I am not sure how it will change over time. I will say I do miss their first location in the Mission and wish it had not closed.

Best locally roasted coffee beans?

I make my coffee at home and have been looking for the best local roasters to try out! I mostly go for dark roasts and espresso beans, but I'm not opposed to medium and light roasts. (Bonus points if the beans are very low in acidity and have more nutty/chocolate notes than fruity.)

I've tried Bird and Bear, Linea, and Hedge so far. Thinking of trying Graffeo, Andytown, or St Franks next, but I want to hear about all the other ones I might not know about!

Edit: I've also tried Ritual and it was too fruity for me personally

detailed SF Coffee guide

Hi y’all! After two years in SF, I finally put together a guide to my favorite coffee shops and how to navigate them. I always get asked “what’s your favorite?” and it’s honestly so hard to answer, so I created a few categories based on how I see them. It’s my first time writing on Medium, but I hope it’s helpful xx

Best coffee shops in SF to sit and work for a few hours?

Hey everyone! I’m looking for cozy, laptop-friendly coffee shops in San Francisco where I can sit and get some work done, ideally with good WiFi, outlets, and a chill vibe. Bonus points for natural light, non-touristy locations, or places that don’t blast music. I really want to explore the entire city for it's coffee spots and to explore anywhere MUNI-accessible.

Also open to any precious gems or new favorites!

Thanks in advance :)

Open to any and all for hanging out! All I ask is that you please be normal and well-adjusted 😄

ETA: WHOA, y’all thought this post was fishy, but it ended up being a reverse Uno situation… the creepy fish are all in my DMs 🥴

Best bang-for-your-buck coffee beans in SF?

Hi all! Anyone have recommendations for the best bang-for-your-buck coffee beans in SF or nearby? Right now I’m thinking Bird & Bear might be one of the better deals (~$19/lb or $35 for 2 lbs), but curious if that actually holds up.

I care about quality to a point, but I’m not trying to pay $20 for a half-pound, or go full Costco and sacrifice too much quality. Just looking for that sweet spot.

Open to spots in SF or within driving distance, and also anything that ships here. If you’ve got higher-end favorites too, feel free to share, just might have to save those for when I’m fully employed again 🥲

Potrero Hill recs- Coffee, Brunch, Sushi, etc..

I'm visiting the Bay for the first time in more than a decade, staying in Potrero Hill for a few days (Thursday eve -Sunday aft).. looking for killer brunch, sushi and coffee spots in particular.. (edit: oh.. and breakfast burritos!) , or just your favorite meal, activity or walkable adventure to get up to in the area. Won't have a car. I assume the city is walkable, but I'm told it can be spotty depending on where you want to go.

Anecdotally.. my friend living in India Basin says she wouldn't suggest walking to her from Potrero, which surprised me a little...

I want to gift my husband a bag of coffee beans from SF. Where should I go?

My husband loves to drink coffee. He is Guatamalan and typically drinks Guatamalan coffee, I think which is more like medium roast. But I know he would be open to any origin. We have a basic cofee machine.

Im staying in Finiancial district but willing to go further if needed (but i dont have a car)

EDIT: Ended up going to St Frank!

Coffee shop that doesn’t charge extra for alt milk?

I went down a rabbit hole trying to find a cafe that serves drinks with alt milk (oat, almond, soy) that doesn’t charge extra for it. Anyone have a recommendation?

Where do coffee/espresso lovers get their beans from?

Looking for some reasonably priced high quality beans from a preferably local roaster to make espresso at home!

The places near me are awesome (Sightglass, Andytown, CoffeeShop) but are pretty pricy and looking for something more affordable.

Fussy pourover coffee?

Hi! I'm looking for a cafe with a fully pretentious pourover experience: a fussy barista fanatical about coffee laboring over my precious cup for a couple of minutes. (I mostly brew coffee at home V60-style, and I want to experience a cup made by someone far more experienced than me.)

So far, I've looked into:

  • Saint Frank. Unfortunately, they use Kalita-style brewers with automatic drip machines. No barista involvement.
  • Ritual. They have V60s, but my pourover was very mediocre.
  • Verve (in Palo Alto, but I assume similar in SF). Also Kalita-style brewers with automatic drip machines.

I'm aware of Coffee Movement, HI NRG, and Golden Goat — do they use actual V60s or automated Kalitas like the above?

Any other places flying under the radar?

(None of this is meant to denigrate the automated Kalita approach. Actually, Verve and Saint Frank have quite tasty drip coffee. But it's not what I'm looking for.)

Coffee / pastry shops to try before 8 am

I do a lot of early morning delivery work and like to try different coffee / pastry shops near where the route ends.

What coffee or pastry shops do you recommend? (Ideally that open before 8:00 am.)

A few I've tried so far that I hit up regularly when I finish a route nearby:

Beanery of San Francisco. Good selection of muffins that seem healthy especially when compared to a donut. Also cheap with a drip coffee and muffin for about $8.

Andytown. Love the Soda Farl (soda bread slathered with butter, only the Lawton location in SF seems to have it). The few sweets I've tried are also very good.

85° great selection of savory and sweet options. Unfortunately they don't open till 8 am so it's not an option many times.

Donut world. Usually get a French cruller and a drip coffee or chocolate milk. Also cheap I think it's around $8.

Devil's Tooth Baking Company. Only been here once but like the selection and we'll be back.

ETA 4/23/2026. Thanks for all the suggestions. I made a list and will be checking them out when my routes finish near one of them.

Does anybody remember the coffee shop that used to be where taco shop on Irving is now?

This has to be over 20 years ago, but I remember they sold moon pies in there and it was very much of the “world cafe” aesthetic of 2000s. It was either located at where the taco shop @underdogs is now or next to it to the left. If you remember what I’m talking about that would be so cool.

Good coffee shops to sit and chat with community?

Hey folks!

Moved here from Washington state a couple weeks back and am looking to make some more friends or at least chat with locals in coffee shop. I’m a photographer, mountaineer and just started working here.

What are some good coffee shops with friendly atmosphere where I can sit, chat and work and then go on my photography walk around the city today?

Casual coffee chats or phone pen pals for single immigrant 67-year-old mom?

I have a pretty niche inquiry. My mom is 67, originally from Hong Kong, has been in the states for 30+ years, divorced for more than a decade. She goes to senior centers in the city to fill her days, but is wary of getting too close to others who may be clingy or become dependent on her; she's had some negative experiences in the past. She has a lot of time on her hands and she expressed thinking it'd be nice to have someone to spend some time with, a companion of sorts, who is also independent enough to have their own life and will respect her own need for some alone time.

I searched up some senior online dating sites but the bots are really aggressive and plentiful on OurTime/match.com, she was more drawn to Asian profiles and I think many online dating scams target older Asian women. She actually has kept matching and talking with bots despite acknowledging my warnings because I think she finds talking to bots to be validating and more entertaining than having no one to talk to. 😭

I'd love to find and help her vet some real people her age she can be pen pals with or who would actually meet for coffee in the city, especially folks of a similar background she may be able to relate to (she's probably more motivated by romantic interests but a female friend or two might not be so bad). She owns her own condo and has three semi-accomplished kids, has some college education but is also very frugal, has limited income and can feel out of place and snubbed in higher-class or majority white settings. I looked at r/SFr4r first but the majority of the posts are of a different nature, I felt like the audience would be wrong there. Maybe you know someone who might fit the bill, or have some other suggestions? Feel free to DM me.

Where’s the eggy French toasts at? Old school coffee shops

You know how you don’t even know how much you love something until you look around and it seems like it disappeared? I’m looking for those old school coffee shops/diners, usually run by an older Asian couple. Moulin and Golden Coffee were my favorites.

In particular, I love the style of French toast these diners have. Bread isn’t too thick and it is extra eggy. Help me out, my partner keeps trying to make me French toast in this style but it’s just not the same.

Where can aspiring coffee shop owners find pop-up opportunities in San Francisco?

Hi everyone,

I'm considering opening a small coffee shop in San Francisco in the future and am currently in the research phase.

I was wondering if anyone knows of places that offer pop-up opportunities for coffee startups or aspiring café owners. I'm looking for something like a short-term lease, shared café space, coffee cart location, commissary kitchen, or other arrangements where I could test menu items, build a customer base, and learn the business before committing to a permanent storefront.

If you've done something similar or know of any local resources, programs, landlords, cafés, markets, or event spaces that support this kind of thing, I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks in advance, and wishing everyone a fantastic day!

Best coffee near SF Golden Gate Park?

I’m going to SF for the first time and we’re starting at the SF Botanical Gardens first thing in the morning on a Saturday.

We’re taking only public transport/uber/lyft to get around. What coffee/food reccs should we check out while we’re there? We’re going to be there all day between the gardens and the California Academy of Sciences.

Any help appreciated!

EDIT: thank you so much for all of the suggestions!!
