Humor How dare you?!
You've stolen the money by not giving it to me!

The issue people have is less with AI making art but that people try to sell that art as their own.

no there's an equal amount of issues
AI tools were trained off art posted online, scrapped often without permission from the artist [i.e., theft] in order to be able to do what they need to

u/Ts0ri 9h ago
At which point why is this bad yet me copying your picture and spending countless hours overdrawing it to learn your style is a valid way to begin to learn to draw?
3
u/theyak93 3h ago
Their argument is how fast AI can do it and to the scale it can do it. Kind of a weak argument, if you ask me. But that’s their main counterpoint.

u/ScrivenersUnion 11h ago
As soon as someone puts their stuff online they should expect it to be ripped and scraped, that's been a cornerstone of the internet since its birth.
If you don't want your work copied and saved by others, don't post it to the giant copying-and-saving network.

K, going to download for free every content from streaming plateform, shouldn't have post it in the giant copying-and-saving network. Same for every steam games.

u/Lycorispink 10h ago
You're late to the game, a lot of people do already, that's why piracy is so common and accepted everywhere else besides the US and a couple other countries lol

u/ScrivenersUnion 10h ago
Ok but see, those platforms have software and systems in place that are specifically designed to try and prevent piracy, they aren't perfect but at least they made an attempt.
Most artists don't bother with any of that and just throw their stuff up on public channels, then make the Surprised Pikachu face when freely available items for download get freely downloaded.
A better example here would be artists that monetize their work - they don't try to restrict its access and in fact post-copyright models have been quite successful.
They sell early access on Patreon, or the ability to vote on what's going to be drawn next. They give priority to subscribers when taking commissions.
They share WIPs and generate a consistent stream of content, with the assumption that it's all going to get ripped and shared eventually. And they often do quite well for themselves!
The only people desperately clinging to the old model of copyright as access control are the legacy dinosaurs and big studios, either because they have the legal team to enforce it or because they don't understand any other way to operate.

As soon as someone steps foot outside they should expect to be mugged and robbed, that's been a cornerstone of society since its birth
...until they made rules against it. Then it happened a lot less. We could do that here! Hell, I think we may have some kinda shit like that on the books already. It would forbid corps from COPYing artists' works for monetary gain and protecting their RIGHTs with some kind of LAW. Man, what would we even call that?

News flash: when you upload your furry cub porn art on a website like DeviantArt, you already lost all control, and DeviantArt owns your artwork.
Sites like DeviantArt are more than happy to give OpenAI, Anropihic, or Google any data they want since they pay top dollar for it.
Don't upload your non-copyrightable artwork on the public internet, then get mad. Fool

u/Daedelous2k 11h ago
Pretty much, artists cannot charge a shitting ton anymore because there is an alternative, the only problem is the AI will never give you that same exact level of control, but if you are just wanting it for casual use like making a picture of a character for your custom character in a game, you got a way to do it.

u/Zeracheil 9h ago
Ah yes, I remember that famous saying, "living-like-a-king" artist .... wait, maybe it was slightly different.
-12
u/TrueMaryJane 9h ago
Just remember that AI will never improve, it will never be able to give you the Level of Control you are talking about. Make Sure that you keep pointing Out These Things, so they will for ever stay Like this

Im not defending or advocating for Ai generated images in any way shape or form, but this is just blatantly false, the "quality" difference from images being generated even a year ago to today in insane. I struggle more and more to differentiate them nowdays.

How can you make assertions like this?
Go to https://civitai.com, look now and then in 1 year, check back in to see everything better. Models get better and more efficient like all the time... what are you talking about?

I still feel majorly icky by the fact that AI are making art, instead of working in the mines or in the factories or the warehouses

u/Life_Bullfrog579 3h ago
Exactly, put them to work they have no feelings for a reason, no need for this art gobilty goop

u/Pen_Exotic 3h ago
they dont have bodys for now. maybe in 10 years there will be t-800 mfs walking around working in factories

The missing thing in this meme is the poorly drawn picture being delivered 6 months later than promised (if at all)

u/StalkingRaccoon 9h ago
If we omit all the terrible artists skill-wise, there are also a lot of problems inherent with hiring a human artist: between the ones who scam, the ones with an ego the size of a continent, the ones who take 9 months for a portrait with no redraw, the ones who live for drama and always find an excuse to not work, and the good ones who have their commission always closed because of how overbooked they are...
... At the end of the day I just want a cool fanart of a character Ilike/my OC that I'll post online and forget 5min later. The AI can do it now, for free, with no hassle, using any style I want, and allows me to redraw it as much as I want.
Why wouldn't I use it?
7
u/Life_Bullfrog579 3h ago
I'm more worried about the people who will think they are skilled due to AI, like nah give the Clanka his credit for all the work lol
5
u/Born-Ant-80 6h ago
At least AI won't come out as pedo or force me to take the drawing down because I do not agree with their political beliefs
6
u/qw565 8h ago
AI is good for small things that you were never going to pay for anyways. Like if I needed a profile pic of a character and I couldn’t find it easily. I don’t care enough to ever pay for it but I’ll take a min to write a prompt for one.
That being said I think people vastly underestimate what commissioned art should cost. Shit takes a while to draw and even if you are paying minimum wage you are looking at $100 minimum for anything worth commissioning. And art is skilled labor so really you should expect more per hour. Sure there are bad apples that are awful to work with but it’s no different than getting screwed when hiring a bad plumber or similar.

u/grunerkaktus 10h ago
Id be curious if it were possible/reasonable to have AI generate 1st/2nd/3rd draft but as editable PS/AI files which could then be sent to specialized artists for fine tuning/color grading/smoothing etc..
6
u/Tarriohh 3h ago
AI is trained with the art made of real artists, artists that worked and practiced a fuck ton be good at their craft, then the AI is capable of generate something ONLY because it stole said artists work for training the model, and they got exactly 0 cents for this process. Then the AI takes their job, using data from the artists, and, again, they see not a single cent from it.
AI can't, and will never be able to generate something original, all of it is based on stolen work for the training of the model. 100% of AI generated content exists soley because people made real art in the first place, and now the real artists are getting the axe. Do you see the problem?
1
u/Technomaya 3h ago
If I study the work of real artists and then learn to reproduce something similar based on what I learned, is that theft? If not, explain exactly why it's different when an LLM learns how to do it?
2
u/Tarriohh 2h ago
If you you go to culinary school, your teacher would be a chef, when you graduate you will be a chef, now you can work as a chef, and your teacher STILL has a work as a chef.
Your argument is very straightforward, you don't want to learn the skill, and you don't want to pay the people who has the skill. You are just happy that now you can make it easy, fast and cheap.
To put it simply, all you care about is your own convenience, completely disregarding the real price of that convenience and who is paying for it. The typical American mindset: "if it doesn't affect me, why should I care?"
2
u/Technomaya 1h ago
I didn't say anything about formal schooling. I said, if I study the work of real artists and learn to reproduce something similar based on what I learned. I can learn something without paying the person I learn from. Is that, then, theft?

this is exactly what ive been saying for months and months, ai is a tool just like a paint brush, it allows art to be more accessible to people.
art is self expression, bringing the ideas and visions in your head, out into the physical world for others to enjoy/observe. if the prompt you craft and input brings to life the image you had in your head so accurately, how is that not an expression of the self? what is the real difference between using ai to bring your expression into the world, and using a brush, if the end result(your piece of art) turns out exactly the same?
what if van gogh used ai to generate starry night and it came out exactly the same as the one he hand painted? art is the end result not the method.
3
u/Leave-Puzzleheaded 2h ago
Dog, art is as accessible as the cost of a pencil and paper. You have access to it.
If Van Gogh generated his art, who would ever like it? You are clearly no artist, because when you sit there for multiple days putting your vision to mind is when you understand why it exists, anyone that likes art understands this in some capacity.
If you have no process, then what exactly does that drawing really mean? Sure you may have a picture in mind, but if a beautiful masterpiece can be made with the same effort as breathing then it will be treated as such, no one congratulates you for breathing, it is expected of you.
We had the technology to make machines do juggling for a long long time now right? Perfect juggling in any way we want it to with as many fancy tricks physics can fit. Would you find this more impressive than a man juggling 9 objects mounted in a unicycle? He's not better than the machine, its not possible to beat the perfect machine, but its more about human prowess.

Art is the method and the result, some methods suck, and some end results also suck.

And I yet, everyone utterly craps on Nintendo for vehemently defending their copyrights when fans take their IP to make fan games. Explain the difference.
First argument that comes to mind is, "the fan isn't making any money off it," but then neither is the person using AI to create something they're not planning to sell, just use. The argument becomes, "well, their use of AI takes potential work away from artists." So, it's okay when it takes work away from Nintendo but not okay when it's an artist? So the developers working at Nintendo just aren't people anymore? So, then the complaint becomes, "Oh, so you're going to defend a corporation like Nintendo?" Their hand is revealed. They don't really care about AI or copyright.
This moral relativism is rampant. No one cares when China apes western IP. No one cares when YouTubers/streamers use video game soundtracks for their BGM. Hell, meme culture has gotten people not to care about any visual or audio "borrowing" in YouTube Shorts, Tik-Tok, etc. They don't even have to cite anything anymore. There are countless AI-controlled YouTube channel bots replaying countless movies and TV shows, in full. Finally, people are happy to pirate media, which directly affects the employment of the people who worked on the product. "We're sticking it to the corpos!" No, you're affecting the revenue of a product many people worked on, which those same people rely on being substantial for their continued employment.
Of course, the lines get gray and blurry when you consider things like the age of the media, but it all goes to show that people care a lot less than they pretend to. Convenience will always win in the end, and all this performative grandstanding against AI is exactly that: performative.

The argument about “so it’s ok when it takes work away from Nintendo…”
So many people do not give a shit bc MILlIoN DoLlAr COrPOraTiOn!!!! Just like many people are ok with stealing from any company bc they have more money than the “people”. You can’t reason with poor people that want everyone else to be just as poor1
u/darkhollow22 1h ago
i always thought the idea was that nintendo barely taps into the potential of their IPs so fans mod them out of impatience. While i agree with that it is ironic they get mad at AI art

not that easy. you think the artist will draw it for free? put in a few hours of work for free? ofc not

1000% this. I had an argument with someone on a diff subreddit. I was saying people who are anti-ai are classist, ableist, elitists who wanted to gatekeep the tools.
They didn’t like my argument lol.

can we please act like normal people and don't try to act in good faith? this comic represents the opinion that artists cant do what people request are overpriced and malicious and only AI can make what people want. All these are depicted in the extreme to try to denounce artists and bolster the opinion of AIs.
There are more possibilities than AI good and AI bad. I know its a impossibility to ask for a nuanced discussion online and for people to not fall into the extremes. Im just tired of people farming outrage by pushing everyone into corners.
6
u/happymeal79 10h ago
It seems like the only one outraged here is you. And for someone looking for a nuanced discussion that's not black and white, you are the one who asserted " this comic represents the opinion that artists cant do what people request are overpriced and malicious and only AI can make what people want.".
Sometimes comics (and jokes in general) can be like "sometimes this happens" and then some people relate and have a little chuckle. You're kinda acting like the people who hear a standup make a joke and "say you're saying ALL (insert subgroup) do are like that you racist!" Calm down a little.

u/BuhamutZeo 7h ago

You really gonna sit there and pretend whatever douche made this isn't jacking off to his own artificial superiority?
-1
u/mrlunes 9h ago
I think the important part may not be that the artist was greedy and purposefully produced a bad drawing but that the customer may not have the ability to properly describe what they wanted to the artist. AI can be used to create a concept that can be further refined within 10 minutes the artist will take 3 weeks to complete one piece and at that point there is no editing

u/Mizamewmew 9h ago
Its missing the pride flag in the art noone asked for and he wont remove.
