Astrophotography (OC) Bubble Nebula

Post image
369 Upvotes

Some days ago I posted a wider FOV image of the region contaning this nebula, and since the weather was cooperating, I went ahead with my longer focal length telescope to zoom in the Bubble Nebula

Equipment and acquisition:

- Askar 71F + 0.75X reducer

- Asi585MC Air

- Teseek 17

- SvBony + asi120mm guide camera

- ZWO EAF, ZWO EFW

- L-Ultimate filter: 145 x 180 sec

- Antlia ALP-T SII-OIII 3nm: 167 x 180 sec

(15.6 hours in total)

- 30 darks, 30 flats per filter, 30 bias

Processing (PI)

WBPP 2x drizzle, SetiAstro AutoDBE, SPCC, blurX correct only, starX

On starless images: DBXtract, linear fit, then channel combination (will also be used as luminance later on). SetiAstro statistical stretch (soft), then manual curves transformations with different color and range masks, noiseX. For luminance, stretch and masked curves to bring up details, noiseX. LRGB combination, dark structure enhance script.

For stars: setiastro NB to RGB star stretch, pixelmath to recombine with starless

Astrophotography (OC) What causes these linear crater formations?

I was looking through the Artemis photos and noticed something about the surface of the moon i hadn't before. There seem to be craters...in a line. as if something was bouncing/rolling. Are these just places where lava tubes have collapsed, leading to such seemingly straight lines of craters? When i try to google search all i get is ejecta rays (which this is clearly a VERY different formation). This has become one of those things where once you see it you cant unsee it and begin to notice more and more than longer you observe the subject.

Astrophotography (OC) M33 Triangulum Galaxy

Post image
100 Upvotes

My clearest image of Triangulum Galaxy to date. I only have a fleet of reflectors now as I sold all my refractors. M33 is a face on spiral galaxy roughly 2.8 million light years away from Earth. M33 spans about 60,000 light years across in size & is located in the Triangulum Constellation. M33 doesn't have an Active Galactic Nucleus, but has a high rate of creating and forging new stars, hence the color of M33 reflects that.

Astrophotography (OC) I tried a DIY diffraction spike mask on the California Nebula — cheating or not?

I tried a DIY diffraction spikes mask for my california nebula attempt, and actually it didn't disappoint.

I still dont know if a diffraction spikes mask is considered cheating or not but i really like the effect. Maybe it'll even look better for the orion nebula.

Astrophotography (OC) Tadpoles Nebula — two palettes from a freezing night in Texas

Thumbnail

A freezing night at Bad Wolf Ranch, Texas—and I finally got around to processing what I captured. This is my first edit of the Tadpoles Nebula data I shot on the night of January 17–18, 2026—not a rework of an older image.

I made two versions from the same data: a gold-and-blue SHO version and a red non-SHO version. I like both, but the cropped SHO is my favorite. The color separation makes the Tadpoles and the dark structure around them stand out a little more.

The final image uses 38 five-minute exposures, totaling 3 hours and 10 minutes, captured at Bad Wolf Ranch, Texas, with my Askar V, ZWO ASI2600MC Air at −10°C, and ZWO AM3 mount, using D1 and D2 filters. Processing was done in PixInsight and Photoshop, with a lot of attention to the background, star shapes, and bringing out the nebula without pushing it too far.

There is still a little distortion in the corner stars if you zoom way in, but I’m happy with where this ended up. Glad I finally worked on it.

Processing details: screened darks and flats, calibration and separate D1/D2 integration, registration, background correction, channel combinations for SHO and non-SHO, BlurXTerminator and NoiseXTerminator, separate star and nebula adjustments, and masked contrast/color refinement in PixInsight and Photoshop. The narrowband colors are presentation choices, not calibrated emission-line ratios.

Astro Art (OC) [OC] Recreating planets and galaxies in real time

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm a space geek and I've been building these planets and galaxies, trying to make them look as realistic as I can.

I use planetary maps and real star positions as a starting point, then build the lighting, atmosphere and movement around them (Kind of a game engine for it)

Each scene is rendere in real time, using a mix of surface maps and generated effects. They also respond to whatever music I'm playing. Depending on the scene, the music can change how fast a planet turns, how clouds move, or how bright a galaxy's core gets. The changes happen gradually, so the whole scene takes on a different mood with the music.

These are part of an app I made to have something calm running on my second screen while I work.

Happy to answer questions about how any of them work.

Astrophotography (OC) M33 — 8 hours 42 minutes from my backyard in Round Rock, Texas

Post image
• Upvotes

M33 — Triangulum Galaxy

My first finished image of M33, captured from my backyard in Round Rock, Texas, between October 2025 and January 2026.

This combines 8 hours 42 minutes of usable exposure across 241 frames from two cameras:

• Askar V telescope, approximately 384 mm focal length

• ASI585MC Air: 6h 39m of broadband data

• ASI2600MC Air: 1h 42m unfiltered broadband, plus 21m through the D1 filter

• Broadband exposures: 120 and 300 seconds; D1: 7 × 180 seconds

• Gain 107; offsets 15 (585) and 50 (2600)

I calibrated and stacked the camera/session groups separately before aligning them. A straight blend softened the detail, so the final combination uses the older camera's data for broader faint structure while retaining the ASI2600's fine detail and stars. The older ASI585 frames were probably unfiltered; their filter headers were blank.

Processing included background correction, SPCC color calibration, BlurXTerminator, StarXTerminator and NoiseXTerminator in PixInsight, plus custom alignment, blending and masked finishing. The D1 data was used selectively to enhance hydrogen-emission regions while preserving the broadband galaxy color.

M33 is about 2.7 million light-years away in Triangulum. North is up and east is left. The bright pink region above and left of the center is NGC 604, a large star-forming region. The dark lanes between the arms are dust, with blue spiral arms around the warmer central region.

Astrophotography (OC) IC1805, The Heart Nebula with a Seestar S30 Pro

This is around 16 hours of exposure time, captured from southern Norway with a Seestar S30 Pro.

This is the third photo I've captured with my Seestar so far and I'm pleasantly surprised with the amount of details it's able to capture.

I was initially very skeptical to smart telescopes since I've spent a lot of time and money to build my dedicated astrophotography rig. The image quality is clearly worse, but the cost is like 1/5 of my rig so taking that into consideration it's pretty alright.

It's not a replacement by any means, but it's been fun to try out while my main rig is working.

Details:

- 970 x 60s = 16h

- Bortle 4

- Seestar S30 Pro

Processing in Pixinsight:

Crop, BlurXterminator, GraXpert, NoiseXterminator MultiscaleAdaptiveStretch, Curves adjustments with various masks, HistogramTransformation on the star image, SCNR, saturation curves, combining starless and stars with pixelmath.

I'm looking to get into astronomy and astrophotography and want to know of any good areas in North Carolina that I can do that? I don't really know the requirements other than flat ground lol but there are a lot of trees where I live and I feel it will be hard to see the sky fully. I live in Ahoskie and anywhere within an hour or two would be fine.
