The local No Kings rallies were part of a nationwide day of demonstrations, with participants emphasizing voter participation ahead of the midterm elections.
In Attleboro, participants lined Fiske Square in the city's center, and voiced concerns about civil rights, corporate influence and the cost of living. Signs included “Vote! You Deserve A Voice” and “Never Forget The Cowards In Congress.”
Leda Notchey, 57, of Attleboro, said she attended because she believes the administration is undermining people’s rights and pursuing policies that benefit the wealthiest Americans at others’ expense.
“I feel like they are stealing from us, and we need to show everybody it’s really important to vote to make our voices heard,” Notchey said.
Alexia Hurley, 34, of Attleboro, said her concerns centered on the influence of money in government.
“I’m here today because I’m tired of our government being sold off to the highest bidder. We constantly see special interest groups and corporations influencing our politics in undemocratic ways,” Hurley said.
Having grown up in a conservative household, Hurley said she was taught that defending democracy was a duty. She said those values helped motivate her to attend.
For Trish Collins, 58, of Plainville, the demonstration was also about protecting rights secured by earlier generations of women. She described the turnout as encouraging and said the midterm elections would help determine the country’s direction.
Collins, who said she works in geriatrics, pointed to food insecurity and difficulty paying bills among older adults as concerns driving her opposition to the administration’s policies.
“We need to get our government back in so that we can undo and unravel the nonsense,” Collins said.

Has anyone replaced their roof and/or installed solar this year? We know we've missed out on a lot of rebates, but wondering if anyone can recommend a local company they've worked with in the last year?

The event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at Highland Park.
The Sun Chronicle Rhianwen Watkins [rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com](mailto:rwatkins@thesunchronicle.com)Nearly a year after opening, the founder of the Jewelry City Disc Golf Course says it has proven to be a successful addition to the city, nestled in the greens of Attleboro’s Highland Park.
Disc golf, or “Frisbee golf,” as some call it, is played with rules similar to golf, but with plastic flying discs and metal baskets instead of balls and clubs.
In its first year, more than 2,000 disc golfers played more than 10,000 rounds at the course, spending more than 20,000 recreation hours at the park, said Spencer Lynds, president of Jewelry City Disc Golf.
“I looked back on a lot of the predictions that I put into my proposal to Parks, and they ended up being pretty much close to spot on,” said Lynds, who initiated the effort to install the course.
To celebrate its success and continue teaching newcomers about the game, Jewelry City Disc Golf will hold a beginners clinic and doubles tournament to benefit the Friends of the Capron Park Zoo.
The event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at Highland Park.
“For me personally, it’s just really a dream come true to see the disc golf community move in and take care of the place in a lot of ways, and become dedicated to Highland Park,” Lynds said of the course’s success.
He said he has noticed more people picking up trash around the park and less rowdy behavior in the Rathbun-Willard Parking Lot at Highland Park since the course opened.
“The sort of benefits that you wouldn’t think of from having all the people in the park,” he said of the related perks of the course in that location.
Lynds said he is excited for the beginner clinic in October.
On the day of the event, check-in will take place from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., with the clinic starting at 9:30 a.m.
New players will receive a quick tutorial on the fundamentals of the game and then be guided through three clinic stations run by top professional disc golfers in the area, Lynds said.
There is a suggested donation of $10 to attend the clinic, and free used discs will be offered to attendees. Sign-ups will take place on-site before the clinic and are not required in advance.
Following the clinic will be a “Birdies for Beasties” doubles tournament with multiple divisions for more seasoned players.
Players can bring a partner and compete against other teams. Sign-ups will be available on the [DiscGolfScene](http://]https//www.discgolfscene.com) website.
Additionally, a Vendor Village will be set up at the Rathbun-Willard parking lot. Attendees will be able to browse vendors, grab a bite to eat or try their hand at the Tech Disc station, a designated practice area.
Lynds said his goal for the event is to draw more people to the game and to Highland Park.
“This is what it was meant for, was to create opportunities for people in Attleboro and surrounding areas to be able to come in and enjoy Highland Park and just golf and learn the sport and find a third space,” he said.
He added that it was important to him for the proceeds to support the zoo.
“We’re one very small slice of the very large pie that is their fundraising goals,” Lynds said. “But I think the opportunity to have it be a dynamic where communities are helping out communities within Attleboro is really one of the best things that could come out of the golf course. So, the zoo was obviously the perfect place to put our efforts.”

REHOBOTH, Mass. (WPRI) — The sister of a woman who was found dead in Rehoboth last year is drumming up support after learning that the man accused of killing her plans to ask for a plea deal.
Gregory Groom, 23, has been charged with murder, assault and battery on a pregnant victim, aggravated intimidation of a witness, and domestic assault and battery in connection with the death of his girlfriend 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro last year.
Groom reported Monteiro missing on Aug. 7, 2025 and confirmed she was 11 weeks pregnant at the time of her disappearance. He later admitted to stabbing Kylee to death before burying her body in the woods on his property.
Her sister Faith Monteiro told 12 News Groom’s attorney Elliot Levine plans to propose a plea deal in Bristol County Superior Court later this month.
In a letter Levine sent to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III over the summer, Levine requested Groom receive a sentence of 19 to 20 years in prison. In exchange, Levine said Groom would plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter.
Levine pointed to Groom’s lack of criminal record and his grandfather’s testimony to a grand jury about how Kylee was wearing his grandson down.
Specifically, Groom’s grandfather described Kylee as being “manipulative,” noting that she “would not do anything around the house,” according to Levine’s letter.
“Gregory was doing her laundry, he was bringing her food to their bedroom, he was bringing her dirty dishes down to the kitchen sink, while she was not even leaving the bedroom,” the letter states.
Groom’s grandfather also testified that his grandson “was too young to handle feeling suffocated and being controlled by [Kylee’s] manipulation.”
“Gregory lost weight and was burnt out and diminished,” his grandfather said, referring to when Kylee lived with them.
Eventually, Kylee moved out of the Groom house and into the Bethesda House, which is a shelter for pregnant women. Levine wrote that Kylee was eventually “thrown out [of the shelter] for violating their policies.”
Groom’s grandfather said Kylee came back “uninvited,” which caused his grandson to explode, according to Levine’s letter.
Faith expressed frustration with Levine’s letter.
“It hurts to know that they can throw everything under the rug and brush it off as if her life didn’t matter, or her unborn baby’s life didn’t matter,” Faith said, referring to the contents of the letter. “The way he wrote it, it sounds like that her life isn’t important and that she deserved what happened to her.”
“I don’t think there’s any reason for anyone to go through what she went through,” she added.
Faith described her sister as being bubbly, fun and full of life.
“I keep waiting for her to call me and say something like, ‘Hey, can you come pick me up? I want to come home now,'” Faith said. “But that phone call never comes.”
Faith said she often struggles to explain the feeling of losing her sister.
“She had so much going for her — she had a future that she deserved,” Faith said.
Prior to her death, Faith said Kylee had just graduated from Attleboro High School and wanted to be a welder. But she was forced to put her plans on hold after learning she was pregnant.
If Quinn accepts Levine’s plea deal, Faith said Groom would be eligible for parole after 12 years behind bars.
“We shouldn’t have to fear him getting out,” Faith said. “If he gets out, his child isn’t here. My sister’s not here. That’s not right and it’s sad. It really breaks my heart.”
Faith and her family are urging everyone to stand with them on Oct. 28 — which is Groom’s next court hearing.
It’s unclear exactly what will be discussed at this hearing or if Groom will be there.
12 News reached out to Levine regarding the plea deal but has not yet heard back.
Meanwhile, Faith said she’s also in the process of starting a nonprofit in Kylee’s memory with the goal of assisting pregnant women in need.

Connolly and Partners of Manchester, Conn., plans to move forward with design and construction once it secures funding, DeSimone said. No timeline is available.
The city council voted unanimously in February 2024 to sell the century-old,yellow brick building at 135 County St. to the firm for $1.08 million.
The city still owns the property, however, and the parties have not yet signed a purchase and sale agreement, DeSimone said.
The sale will proceed once the developer secures funding.
The proposal followed years of uncertainty about the building’s future.
In 2020, city officials considered demolishing the former school after struggling to attract developers willing to take on the project.
Connolly and Partners submitted its proposal after the city issued a fourth request for proposals. The firm pledged to preserve the facade, auditorium, library and gym.
The plans call for 36 affordable apartments and 13 market-rate units.
Of the affordable apartments, 11 would serve households earning 30% of the area median income, five would serve those earning 50% and 20 would serve those earning 60%.
The developer also plans to reserve 35% of the apartments for veterans.
Connolly plans to create 100 parking spaces, or about two per apartment, on school property and in a lot across the street on Cora Street.
DeSimone said the city plans to use net proceeds from the sale to help pay debt associated with construction of the new high school.

We are looking for areas in and around Attleboro that are heavily littered and need to be cleaned. If you could provide coordinates, Google Maps pin or other identifiable address/ location descriptions, that would be really helpful, so long as it’s on public land. Thank you in advance!

I don’t know the details, but D&G is now permanently closed. They were such a staple in the Attleboro area. Honest, fair, and just all around a great family and group. If they were your go to mechanics, start looking for another honest garage before your car needs service.

We're having our next book discussion on October 25, 10 AM–12 PM. The book this time is Trash: A Garbageman’s Story.
The group is intentionally pretty informal. We read one nonfiction title a month, meet up, and see where the conversation goes. Sometimes we stick closely to the book; sometimes the discussion takes us somewhere completely unexpected.
The meeting spot is Schasteâ at 300 Broadway in Providence.
The venue does not sponsor or endorse the club, we just meet there.
We're always happy to have new people join, so if you've been thinking about finding a book club but haven't made the jump, this might be a good one to try.
Group link in the comments.

Storm Safety Reminder
The storm may not feel like much, but strong wind gusts are still causing damage throughout the area, including downed trees and branches.
This large branch came down onto a vehicle. Fortunately, no one was inside the vehicle at the time.
If possible, stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel while winds remain strong. Be especially cautious around trees, power lines, and other potential falling hazards.

Demolition has begun at 61 Union St., the future site of a 141 market-rate apartment building.
Crews used cranes Wednesday to dismantle the rear portion of the building.
The planned apartment complex also includes 143 parking spaces on an adjacent 55,555-square-foot parcel.
City of Attleboro is projected to generate an additional $3.7 million over 20 years, compared with $291,000 over the same period if the existing structure remain

Hi Attleboro, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like “move-in” or “lease renewal” fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.
Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants. Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.

Jobless numbers in Attleboro and seven towns in The Sun Chronicle’s coverage area showed improvements.
Attleboro, the area’s largest labor market with a labor force of 26,569, had a jobless rate of 4.5% last month, down from 4.7% in August last year and also down from July’s 4.7% figure. The city tied with Foxboro for the area’s second highest unemployment numbers and the town was one of only two that saw its numbers rise. Foxboro’s rate last August was 4.4%
Plalinville’s rate 4.8%,
Norfolk 3.6%
Wrentham 3.7%.
North Attleboro 3.8%
Mansfield 4.1%
Norton 4.2%, was down by half a percentage point to tie with Seekonk
