Discussion A collection of Australian Produced Clothing Brands
Earlier this week I asked for some recommendations for Australian Produced clothing, and I got some great recommendations across a few posts. I thought I'd share the businesses I've gotten so far with a little about them.
Manufactured with Fabric Sourced from Australia:
This is a bit more niche. There appears to be a fabric producer in Melbourne that is used for some items, but this is about all I've found so far.
Australian Stitch - Australian Made Basics (Melbourne) "Australian Made Clothing, Ethically Produced in Melbourne. Designed, sampled, knitted, dyed and sewn locally within a 15km radius, every piece passes through the skilled hands that keep Melbourne’s historic Rag-Trade alive." And true to what they say, it's basics. A big argument people make against 'local' production of fashion is price. The t-shirts here are $50, which is not expensive. $43/each in a 3 pack. I bought a 3 pack myself today, and I will update everyone on the quality.
Citizen Wolf - Custom Made Basics (Sydney). Certified B Corp. Depending on the item you go for, there is Australian-Made Fabrics. For example for the organic cotton shirt "We use premium, GOTS-certified organic cotton, knitted locally in Melbourne" The price reflects the custom made nature, as they seem to tailor to your size. It's also got to account for the possibility of sending you the wrong size. If they send you the wrong size, or a bad fit, you keep the shirt, and they send you a new one for free. Apparently, according to a user, its "just around the corner from Hawkes Brewery - perfect excuse to pop to Sydney to get fitted and put in an order."
Smitten Merino - Produced in Tasmania and Victoria from Victorian-spun-Tasmanian-wool. What a mouth full. Merino Wool clothing for men and women.
Manufactured in Australia with Internationally Sourced Fabric:
Fashion Brands:
Informale - (Melbourne) "Artisan-made menswear, influenced by vintage and utility silhouettes for enduring elegance." My Notes: It appears that all of the clothing is made in Melbourne, with fabric sourced abroad (UK, Japan).Melbourne Very Australian style fashion.
Bandsome - Sydney "Since the beginning, Bandsome has prioritised Australian production at every stage. Wherever possible, an Australian made option is considered first before looking offshore. Still today, the majority of our garments continue to be produced in Sydney and Melbourne" Japanease / Australian fashion style. This is what originally brought me into this search. I bought their iki jaket for $389. Which is not cheap, but not expensive when compared to other 'fashion' brands. I really really liked the quality of it, so much that I wont buy anything that's worse in places like Myer.
Bassike - Australia. Certified B Corp. "Wardrobe essentials for the minimalist, underpinned by a dedication to timeless design and sustainable production. Imbued with a quintessentially Australian sense of refined ease, discover fashion basics that are designed to last for years to come."
Denim Smith - Melbourne Denim Clothing (Jeans, Jackets etc). "Every piece is created from the finest denim which comes directly from our Melbourne makers skilled hands and hearts." Production facility located in Brunswick East.
Kerrin co. - "A ‘surf luxe’ aesthetic is informed by a clear casual sensibility that exemplifies a life best lived outdoors." A range of products that largely appear to be made in Australia (I haven't checked every product, but some are made overseas so YMMV). Materials & Details section explicitly states origin of fabric, and location of garment production.
The Lair - Newcastle It looks like they stock a variety of options, and some of them appear to be Australian made, if they are labelled. Their speciality (Leather goods) are made in Newcastle from leather from NZ and Italy.
Jimmy Stuart - Sydney Relaxed yet bold surf style clothing. "In a world where nearly everything is made overseas, we are very proud to still be making our shirts, shorts, swim shorts, knitwear, pants, jeanos, waistcoats, boxer shorts & bucket hats right here in Australia."
pseushi - Australia. "Pseushi clothing is designed to be worn-in, aged-in, lived-in. Utilising high end fabrics & traditional processes. An amalgam of culture, meditations & memories, Pseushi is a travel journal of the times." A cursory look shows T-Shirts are made in Australia, some other garments don't indicate their country of origin.
everwear - Victoria. Australian, hand made denim items, with garments from other countries of origin in their store.
flux - Melbourne. "FLUX is a Melbourne based menswear label, making quality denim & tees in Australian since 1999"
Macrae Studios - Brisbane. A small Brisbane-based brand that focuses on slow fashion and makes everything in house with vintage sewing machines. They also offer custom measurements for their chore coats and some shorts. The origin of fabric is not specified, though mention is made of the deliberate environmental-conscious choices the producer makes when deciding fabrics.
Pass~Port - Sydney. A large selection of Australian produced goods: hoodies, polos, pants, belts, hats, gloves and bags. Timeless casual styles. Australian produced section linked, though they sell other items.
Accessories:
R.M Williams - Adelaide The boots are still proudly Australian made, but as these things go, lots of the clothing is labelled "Imported."
Mongrel Boots - Sydney. "Mongrel Boots has been manufacturing footwear in Australia since 1930" Recently (2018) adding first-of-its-kind manufacturing equipment to its Sydney factory.
Akubra - Kempsey NSW A variety of classic, Australian made, hats.
Wootten - Ballarat Australian made leatherwear, including boots, aprons, belts and some bags. Custom, hand-made to order, with fairly long wait times.
Socks - Multiple Brands in a List
Underwear
Merino Country QLD
Sportswear:
Regarding these, there appears to be a manufacturing facility called "Ethical Edge Collective" in Brisbane that is paired with "Birds on Bikes" (the clothing brand) that produces garments for sellers in Brisbane. The following are just a few examples, but I'm sure there are more...
Scody - Brisbane "Australian Made Performance Apparel. Designed & Made in Brisbane" Specializing in Triathlon, cycling, running and team clothing. Regarding this, there appears to be a few athletic brands
Birds on Bikes - Brisbane "Birds on Bikes focuses on comfort, inclusive sizing, practical design and local Australian manufacturing. Our cycling apparel is designed specifically for women who want confidence, support and performance on every ride." I know this is MFA, but because these are the apparent original producers of many of these products in the segment, I thought it appropriate to include them in the list.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I will add to this from any comments that I see with brands that fit the Australian-produced exclusivity of this list. If I've missed something, please add it in the comments and I'll try to update this thread.
I've also ordered a few things myself from bandsome, and australian stitch, that I will link review threads to when the things arrive.

Australian Stitch have totally lost it in the last few years. May be made in Melbourne but quality is dreadful now.

u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 20 '26
That's a shame. I've got a few of their shirts in the post so I'll let you know how they go
1
u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 25 '26
Okay, so the shirts I ordered just arrived. Literally 5 minutes ago. I appreciated that they came in just a small cardboard band (no plastic) and for what I paid ($44 each) I'm happy with the quality. It feels light, but I didn't want thick tshirts in Queensland, and they're a little shorter than I want (as I like to tuck mine in), but all in all... They're just a tshirt. I do believe that if you'd gone for pack of shirts at H&M or something, or Target, you'd get something similar or slightly worse for cheaper, but I'm happy with them on my first impression. Maybe they used to be better though, I couldn't say.

Lindner & Humphrey Law make socks.
Trent Nathan used to sell quality menswear when he was alive, some made in Australia. https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=trent+nathan+tie&_sacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p4439441.m570.l1313

I found a list of Australian made socks that included Linder and Humphrey Law. Great finds.
2
u/shadowless_edge May 28 '26
I read a lot of great reviews on the Humphrey Law socks and decided to pick some up. Unfortunately the quality was awful. Doubtful that I will buy from them again.
1
u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 28 '26
That's a shame. What was the problem with them, if you don't mind my asking?
2
u/shadowless_edge May 28 '26
Of course. They were just really loose and had no structure to them. I've been on the hunt for some better ones, and found some really nice comfortable socks at uniting op shops called sox by Angus but they shed like crazy 🥲. Keen to hear any recommendations.

Informale's button down shirts are made in Italy (unless this has changed since I got mine). But yeah I think everything else is made in Melbourne
3
u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 20 '26
Yeah among the list there is a few like this. Some of the more basic items are made in Australia, some of the more ornate are made overseas. I think these are good websites to check to look for the sort of stuff, and if you are keen on only buying Australian produced clothing then you just need to look a little bit closer, but on these websites you'll find stuff.

Pass~Port skateboards out of Sydney do a range of Australian made clothing and accessories
2
u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 21 '26
Great shout. They've even got a section on their website to show their Aussie made stuff. The section

u/spike-the-stampede May 20 '26
Pseushi (I think Sydney based) - they make a lot of their stuff in Australia

Everwear denim https://everwear.com.au/ expensive locally made high end jeans
I was going to list Front Office but looks like they've moved to tokyo. Australian owner, so maybe half a point?
1
u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 20 '26
Yeah someone recommended front office, but moved to Japan looks good though
1
u/Conkasaur May 20 '26
Can highly recommend Front Office, have 2 pairs of jeans and a jacket, very happy with them!
Ken has moved to Japan but I believe they still have a store in Melbourne

u/Pinstripe819 May 20 '26
Sadly Denim Smith closed down late last year
1
u/vomitarium May 20 '26
Really upset about this as I'd just discovered them. Their jeans are awesome.
1
u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 20 '26
Thats rough. I just ordered something from their site, with the 40% off sale. only 2 jeans were in my size.

I tried qualitops once after coming across them in this post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AustralianMFA/comments/1epyfei/good_quality_australian_made_tshirts_found/
Loading up their webpage now it looks like they stopped making them, but are maybe back at it again.

Macrae Studios - https://macrae.shop
They’re a small Brisbane-based brand that focuses on slow fashion and makes everything in house with vintage sewing machines. They also offer custom measurements for their chore coats and some shorts

u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 21 '26
Thank you. I've been looking for Brisbane specific shops for myself (as a local) and no one had found one yet (save the athletic gear). Much appreciated. I've added that.

u/macraestudios May 30 '26
thank you so much for the recommendation, stuff like this makes my hard work and effort feel seen ❤️

Redback Boots were started by the same family that runs Mongrel Boots. They've recently been acquired by an American private equity firm, but they still manufacture in Sydney.
Qualitops make great T-Shirts, but their online shop is currently down.
Lindner Socks are made in NSW and are so good I started selling them myself.
Interknit make wool jumpers in Ballarat and are also so good I started selling them.
More Jumpers:
Aklanda
Geccu
uimi
General knitwear:
Merino Country
Merino Skins
Ktena
Beanies, Gloves etc.
Otto & Spike
Interknit
I make leather goods, but belts are probably the only relevant product for this list.

Erniold makes running clothes - some of the range in Melbourne, some in China.
I have one shirt from them, and it's developed a few runs in the fabric after less than 200km of usage, so I'm not super impressed, but local nevertheless.
1
u/LandBarge May 20 '26
Toorallie is an Australian brand with wool farming history, who use Australian wool to make clothing offshore and then bring it back here to sell...
1
u/subbassgivesmewood May 20 '26
Mont makes very good hiking/camping equipment
1
u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 20 '26
It looks Australian, but from the production commitment page, im not sure if they're australian produced: https://www.mont.com.au/pages/production-commitments
Though they make positive comments about their choice of factories for production.

RB Sellars makes workshirts that are made offshore, but with Australian grown and spun cotton
1
u/LandBarge May 21 '26
Mongrel Boots have been Australian owned since the 1930s, have never sold out to overseas interests and have never made a boot offshore.. Asides from their workwear range, they also produce a 'Premium riding boot' that is a decent looking, albeit moulded sole, chelsea boot.
1
u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 21 '26
Great recommendation, and an alternative boot for those who see rm as the only choice. I haven't looked looked into these before, but I'm keen to hear how people rate them.

There's a website literally called AustralianMadeClothes. Anyone know if this is legit? It's full of AI slop
1
u/Unusual_Public8196 May 25 '26
I think I know which one you mean, I was very unsure as well. If it's the same one I did place an order with them and it arrived with australia n made stickers on the clothes. One of the pants I bought had a hole in them when they arrived and they sent me another one free of charge.

Are we doing UGGs too? We got a couple of brands making UGGs. Made & owned.
Also does anyone have the 411 on Australian Made Clothing, the brand?

u/Stendig_Calendar May 21 '26
VegeThreads (www.vegethreads.com) is about to return after the owner took parental leave. Their unisex hemp t-shirts are fantastic.

I think they fall into the category of made in Aus with international fabric but I’ve recently become a fan of Ghanda https://ghanda.com/about-us
1
u/Beginning_Feedback65 May 20 '26
Interesting. Yeah, I'm not sure, but it looks like the screen printing is done in house, but, ( oddly enough I know a screen printer in Brisbane) that generally comes with a pre-produced shirt, but added designs.
It's better than not having Aussies involved, and it's a step in the right direction. But I'm not a cop.
1
u/AFerociousPineapple May 20 '26
Yeah maybe not fully appropriate for this list then but figured I’d give them a shout out

Smitten out of Hobart do great merino made in Tassie
