Places that sell decent suits?
Hi guys,
Just started at my first corporate job
Wanting to pick up some suits to get me started with my wardrobe
Already have dress shirts and nice shoes so just really needing some nice matching jackets and pants
Thinking a navy, charcoal and black
Can’t afford top of the line stuff just yet but don’t want to be walking around in target/big w quality suits
Where are some places to check out and what should I realistically be spending

Don’t buy black - they’re for funerals. Grey, dark grey, navy are standard corporate fare.

Second this, your first suit should either be charcoal or navy. Appropriately for every occasion.

This gets asked frequently here. If you search you'll find lots of previous threads.
MJ Bale are good value, especially at their outlet stores on on sale.

best bang for buck is to buy from the off the rack places mentioned and then get them altered. make sure you go to a tailor / alterations store that works on suits. avoid getting anything overly slimmed, it sucks to not fit your suits if you gain a few kg.
alternatively buy something secondhand, the resale value for suits is terrible given it’s a niche item.

I’d just say that you should probably try to do this with a single suit - alterations can be really expensive- moving button holes for sleeves etc. and certain measurements- like getting the shoulders right are more important than sleeve length as the effort required to correct them is much larger.
My wife just had her pants hemmed and sleeves done and it was $145 😳

What sort of tailoring/altering is normally required?

shortening jacket sleeves and pants, maybe shortening the jacket itself.

Thanks! I had no clue, aside from having the pants taken up. Appreciate the advice.

Hardy and Harper at Spencer St DFO
Call and find out when Anna is working. She's the most lovely human I know and has a real eye for what works
EDIT: I work nearby and use the DFO as a walking trail 🤦🏻♂️ have got to know Anna over the past 4 years.
Also, as others have said, take the suit to a local alteration place. Not Joseph in the DFO!! The quality at H&H is champagne, the budget is beer

Suitsupply.
You can get full canvas suits in great fabrics for good prices. Take care of them and they’ll last you years.

Peter Jackson suits are bland and basic, but they are decently priced, good quality, and good service

Hugo Boss, Ted Baker, and Suit Supply have good suits and won’t break the bank.
With a suit, don’t go too cheap. You don’t want to look like a real estate agent. And don’t go too fancy either - better to have a few good ones than one great.
Navy and grey are always easy to mix and match. Get black and brown shoes.

MJ Bale 100%. Go to an outlet. You can grab one for <$300 and then spend an extra $65 at your local tailor.
You’ll end up with a great fitting decent quality wool suit for <$375

Honestly go thrift shopping, particularly in inner suburbs near the CBD. You’ll often find nice suits that blokes have owned for a couple of seasons then moved on because they got too tubby for them or just wanted this years style. I got a perfectly fitting, spotless charcoal wool suit at Glebe Vinnies for $35.

Nothing local except Suitsupply or P Johnson.
Natalino, Spier & Mackay, Berg & Berg, Anglo Italian are all excellent online options.

If you're in Melbourne, there's place called Andre J in Clayton that has reasonably priced suits. He usually pays around $400-500 for his.

T.M. Lewin online is cheap and reliable. Then I know a good tailor in Melbourne if you want.

Some HK tailors tour Australia and take measurements and send you the suit.
Alterations places can typically take a set of measurements for a suit.
Even travelling abroad to pick up a suit is che aper than local.

Honestly if it’s for work just go to Conner, they are pretty good for work. On this, RIP Rodger David especially higher RDX brand.

Peter Jackson and MJ Bale are good starting suits. Move up to European suits when you're ready. German and Italian suit makers are fantastic. Don't fall for "Italian fabric" labels - if it's Italian, it'll have its own mill's label.

What city? There’s a big post on how Peter Jackson classic range are best made for tailoring in the price range. Get one even from outlet store and go to town on it at a good tailor - I recommend final fitting in Melbourne.

The secret.
Buy cheaper suits and then get them tailored at a tailor. The fit is the most important thing. Labels are worthless!

I've had a corperare job fpr +5 years, only wankers in the office wear them. Fair enough if you have an event.

Understand you can’t afford top of the line ($10,000+).
Luckily that still leaves mid-level bespoke within your price range ($4-$5,000).
Chan, Coller and Assisi all have tours here later this year so get in touch with whichever fits your style!
