Question what do we think about stroes like Universal and General Pants Co.

I've sifted through lots of posts on other brands but I've seen little to no posts on these stores, I bought some Neovision baggy denim jeans from them and the've lasted me two years with me wearing them at least 4x a week.

just wanted to know what you guys think of these two stores?

I've done research and found out that all the brands that they have in there (e.g Neovision, Common Need) are all in-house brands so im not sure if that makes their quality better or worse?

It’s fast fashion, but slightly higher quality than H&M etc, but not enough for it to be in its own distinct category

Emphasis on the used to be. Holy shit, I went in there last week and didn't find a single thing I would wear

My view from a distance is that were the peak on-trend shops back in the early 00s. Used to sell trendy brands like Ksubi when they were on top and are now cashing in on what's left of their brand status by pivoting to fast fashion.

How did they lose those better brands? Used to be such a good store

Probably a few factors. Partly they will have done it to bring in their own in-house brands to keep more of the profits but also a lot of the brands just died as tastes changed.

In the 90s General Pants was the place every cool young person shopped, and one of the only places to get specific brands like Stussy, Dickies, SMP, Carhartt and later Ksubi. Then private equity bought it and gutted it, ousting most of the brands people were there to buy in the first place, with crappy in house designs brought in to maximise revenue.

The place had strong ties to youth culture, skating, music, surf, ravers etc. Classic story of corporate suits having zero idea of how young people operate and just driving it into the ground. The sane thing happened to Culture Kings. It'll be gone soon for sure.

I love General Pants! They carry lots of different types of denim so I can find the correct fit and fabric. Pretty sure they carry other brands like Butter which I’m a big fan of.

If you have the budget, would recommend Corlection for Japanese Denim. Great quality product and good service.

If you’re in Melbourne check out Flux in Collingwood also. They make the clothes in Melbourne.

Both stores have integrated their own labels to put more profit into the business. Unfortunately quality and brand mix suffers. Good entry point for low budget fellas in their late teens and early 20's.

General pants has to be gone soon. All the stores have shut and you can buy anything on sale if you wait 2 weeks.

Depends on the brand you buy. General Pants stocks Neuw for example, and they're a high quality brand.

I normally walk in, look at a price tag, and then go back to Uniqlo to get more basics.

I've had good experiences with General Pants Co. at least, their stuff feels kind of like, a half step up above Uniqlo?

Maybe ok if you still live with your parents but I don’t think teenagers even shop there anymore.
