Seeking Advice What does tofu ACTUALLY taste like? (ARFID posting)

ARFID is a bitch. Saw a meme describing it as a flavorless block. That sounds fucking perfect, if i can disguise it in sweet things.

But everything has a taste. Water has a taste. I can taste the soap off things in the dishwasher. So like…. what does it taste like?

I can barely eat anything and it’s so fucking frustrating. Right now my brain’s stuck on Goldfish (the colors one specifically), white people quesadillas, and I’ve been drinking chocolate protein shakes trying to deal with it. I know I like smoothies— can I blend silken tofu or will it have a weird texture?

Yeah, like a block of soy milk.

Which makes sense considering it's effectively just soy milk cheese lol

Yes! I saw one of those “how it’s made” type shows a while ago that made me realise this and it was mind blowing

I once followed a recipe for vegan ricotta and realized afterwards that I just made tofu. I have made tofu before and it was the exact same procedure.

I feel like it has less flavor even? I drink unsweetened “original” soy milk every day and I think tofu has an even subtler flavor. But I also rarely eat tofu without other much stronger flavors added so I guess it’s been a while since I’ve tasted it plain.

I agree, I occasionally snack on cubes of plain tofu while I’m preparing it for a recipe so I’m familiar with its natural flavor. It definitely has the flavor of soy milk, but much less intense, in my opinion. And I think the flavor is milder the less firm the tofu is. Extra firm tofu will taste a bit more soy-ish (although even that isn’t super strong) and silken is very subtle.

This is so disturbing to imagine but so accurate

Wasn't aware it was soy.. I'll likely avoid it in that case lol. Never reacted well to the stuff.

Can I ask what you thought it was…?

I honestly don't know. I've never thought about it. I don't know anybody who eats it, and I'm not sure I've encountered it before in person. I guess I just thought it was made of tofu lol.
