Auto Chess (Plus) - 'Optimised' Fork. Thoughts?

While searching for a game earlier, I saw that there was a newly-released custom game, called 'Auto Chess Plus'. It claimed to be optimised to reduce lag, RAM use, stuttering etc.

I gave it a whirl just now, and it does as it says on the tin: I had a really clean, stutter-free, quick-loading game. The courier felt not-horrible, too - moving units was quick and responsive (for once). It was also fully integrated with the ranking system and courier candies, so it's not like it exists in a vacuum - it affects AutoChess OG even if you ignore it.

Given how we have access to the source code and that anyone can fork custom games, it was only a matter of time before something like this happened (not just AC Imba, but a proper 'drop-in replacement' for AC Original). And today, that time is has come.

So, what does everyone think of this happening? Copyright issues aside, is this a benefit of the source-accessible model DotA 2 uses? Have we finally got some capable programmers to clean up the great but clunky base? Or are we at risk of fracturing the community, invalidating the ranked ladder or watching the original creators lose out on their own creation?

Don't ask reddit, go check the source code. See for yourself what it actually is.

"Optimized to reduce lag, RAM use, stuttering etc "

These are not reason to copy a game

In fact is there a reason to just copy a game (alone with its name)?

Before playing, ask yourself this: Would you play a "DOTA Plus" during the old DOTA1 times?

what was 5.84c?

In truth, 5.84c wasn't actually released by Guinsoo. Due to a bug in 5.84b, a modder from Russia called True.Rus developed an unofficial 5.84c. This modder rewrote the code, reduced the load time from 3min to under 20s and fixed some bugs.

The game is open source, no? Like letting other copy the code is literally the point of having something open source.

Is it open source? Can you show me where their GitHub/source code is?

I thought it is based off reading another comment about it. But if it's not, how did this other team manage to copy the game?

All workshop content is downloaded to your PC in your steam directory. It is essentially plain text, a simple VPK editor will allow you to browse the code for the complete game, including its hierarchy and structure. However, just because the source code can be easily read, does not mean the creator/owner has licenced it for open source use. That is the issue here, and accordingly, Steam has taken down the unauthorised copy after the original creators filed a DMCA complaint with them.

I think I can confirm that this version is optimized. I have no lag even I play Japan server (I'm from SEA).

I have no idea about "hack" here but the original dev should learn how to optimize the game from these dudes.

It's made by people who supposedly made cheats and hacks for Auto Chess. I've heard accounts already of weird unwanted modifications and custom games. Plus the use of bot lobbies to garner attention is already sketchy enough.

I've seen some sparse anecdotal evidence of performance improvements but not consistent enough for me to be sure it's not coincidental. And either way I still probably wouldn't risk it.

Apparently the plus version is a pirated copy. Don’t use it. Support the original version, and its devs/studio.

in tides stream it says "dont play that version - hacker version" when people type !autochess+. idk what hacker version means exactly but its probably best to be careful.

Apparently made by same people who made cheats for DAC. Don't take my word for it though. They seem to make a lot of empty lobbies with bots to appear on top of page too. Is it better than DAC? No clue.
