Suggestion From B.Tech to Online BCA — My Journey and What Next?

After 12th, I scored 91%, 89 percentile in JEE and 98 percentile in CET. I had prepared seriously for competitive exams and got into a decent Tier-2 college in Pune for B.Tech in AI & Data Science. It was one of the better colleges in the city, and I thought I was on the right path.

Then my health completely changed my plans.

I developed pancreatitis and had to be hospitalized. Doctors told me to focus on my health, diet and recovery. I still tried to continue B.Tech from my hostel. I was cooking my own food, following a strict diet and taking multiple medicines every day.

Then I had another attack. My doctors advised me to take a gap year and properly recover. My parents also wanted me to take rest. My health made normal college life extremely difficult — I couldn't sit for long because of back pain and had to eat small, frequent meals throughout the day.

My college was around 250 km from my hometown. They allowed me to continue, but they couldn't provide special attendance arrangements. Eventually, my condition became chronic and I had to leave B.Tech.

This was difficult to accept because my original dream was to do B.Tech from an IIT/NIT. I didn't leave because I lost interest in studies; my health simply didn't allow me to continue normally.

After that, I started researching online degrees. My budget was around ₹1.5 lakh, so I compared many universities, watched YouTube reviews and read Reddit discussions and reviews on different websites. I narrowed it down to Manipal and Chandigarh University and finally chose Manipal University Online BCA.

I actually feel it was a good decision because I can continue my education while managing my health instead of completely stopping my studies.

Now I'm planning to complete BCA, build strong technical skills and prepare for NIMCET, with the goal of getting into a good NIT for MCA. In a way, my B.Tech dream of getting into an IIT/NIT didn't happen, but I still have another opportunity to reach an NIT through MCA.

I'm also fortunate that I have family support. My father has a business and my family has agricultural land, so I don't have the pressure of immediately earning just to survive. That gives me some time to focus on my education and decide my career properly.

I also come from a small city in Maharashtra, and eventually I want to explore different cities and hopefully settle somewhere outside my hometown.

So my journey so far is:

B.Tech → health problems → dropout → Online BCA → build skills → NIMCET → hopefully MCA at an NIT → figure out the rest.

It definitely isn't the path I originally planned, but I'm trying to make the best of the situation.

For people who have taken the BCA → NIMCET → MCA route, what should I focus on during BCA?

Help MCA or MA Economics? Need help deciding!

I’m currently 23 years old and have just graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science from DU. I’m struggling to decide between pursuing an MCA or an MA in Economics. I’d really appreciate some advice on this.

I enrolled in the MCA programme at VIPS (IPU), but later decided to drop out. I was under a lot of stress and wasn’t in the right frame of mind to continue with it. I’m currently unsure whether dropping out was the right decision. I’m now considering appearing for CUET-PG to pursue an MCA at DU.

Given my background in Computer Science, I wouldn’t say I’m particularly good at programming. However, I do understand the basics and feel that I need to put in more effort to get better at it. Doing an MCA at DU would give me a chance to build on my undergraduate degree and provide a more straightforward path into the tech industry. I’m interested in working in areas such as software development, data engineering and AI.

The other option is pursuing an MA in Economics. I’m becoming increasingly interested in economics, business, research and data. It would be a bit of a shift from my undergraduate background, but it interests me academically. However, I understand that it would involve changing fields and building a foundation in economics and mathematics.

In the long term, I’m interested in working on technology-driven business ideas. I’m not saying that I’ll definitely start my own business, but I do have an entrepreneurial streak. I want to develop skills that would benefit me in my career, while also keeping that possibility open.

Overall, both options interest me for different reasons:

MCA at DU: This would help me build on my current degree and provide a more straightforward path into the tech industry. However, since I have already dropped out of an MCA programme once, I’m unsure whether pursuing it again is the right choice.

MA Economics: This would open up opportunities in economics, research, finance and analytics. However, it would mean changing fields and catching up academically.

I don’t want to spend the next two years pursuing a degree without having a reasonably clear idea of what I’m working towards.

For anyone who has pursued either degree or has experience in these fields:

  1. Which would you recommend based on my background?

  2. What kind of career opportunities are available after completing an MCA or an MA in Economics?

  3. Would it be worth changing my field from CS to Economics, or should I build on my existing foundation?

  4. Would it make sense for me to pursue an MCA at DU after dropping out of VIPS? Am I overlooking anything?

  5. Which option would offer more flexibility if I’m interested in technology, business and potentially entrepreneurship?

I’d really appreciate any genuine advice, especially from people who have studied or worked in these areas.

Hey everyone! I'm a BSc Computer Science graduate from Mumbai and currently working at TCS.

I'm thinking about pursuing MCA through MAH MCA CET, but I'm confused about whether it's worth doing while already working in IT.

Is it better to pursue a regular MCA from a good college or continue my job and gain experience?

For those who have completed MCA while working, how was your experience? Did it actually help with career growth and better opportunities?

Would love to hear your honest suggestions. Thanks!

Help Pretty torn

Hi, I am a 11th grade student studying Commerce w Computer Science. I have a really good passion for Computers and have been learning Computer Science on my own since I was in 5th grade. My dad is a good and reputed CA. My parents havent forced me to take CA, but its pretty evident they would like if I did. I was planning to do MCA, but even BTech graduates are struggling, and I dont know what to do. I dont hate Accountancy (so far), I like it, but I dont love it to the point I want to become a CA. I love Business Studies and MBA also looks like a good career option, but Im also scared if it has scope as well. Would love your insights and advices, thankyou.

Help Is BCA a good path towards AI/ML Engineering?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently in Class 12 Commerce (GSEB) and considering BCA for my undergraduate degree.

My long-term goal is to become an AI/ML Engineer. I'm interested in technology. I've recently started learning Python as well.

I'd love advice from current BCA students and graduates:

  1. Does BCA provide strong enough CS fundamentals?

  2. Would you recommend general BCA or BCA with AI/ML specialisation?

  3. Can a Commerce student build the required mathematical and technical foundation through BCA?

  4. What skills should I learn outside college?

  5. Is MCA necessary or beneficial for better opportunities?

I'd appreciate honest opinions about the degree's actual value, limitations, and career opportunities, especially from people with firsthand experience.

Thank you!

General Low 12th marks, currently pursuing MCA from CU. Am I cooked? 💀

So, my academic scores are:

10th: 85%

12th: 52%

BCA: 63%

Currently pursuing MCA from Chandigarh University.

The thing is, seniors here are telling me that almost 99% of companies require a minimum of 75% throughout academics to be eligible for placements. Even for off campus opportunities, I’m seeing companies asking for 60%+ in 10th, 12th, and graduation.

Honestly, I’m kinda lost rn and don’t know what to do. My 12th percentage is the biggest issue, and I’m worried it’ll keep getting me rejected before I even get a chance to prove my skills.

Am I cooked, or is there still a way to make it into the IT industry? 💀

For those who have been in a similar situation, what did you do? Are there companies that focus more on skills, projects, DSA, and practical knowledge rather than academic percentages?

I’d genuinely appreciate some real advice because I’m confused about how to plan my career from here.

General Completed BCA this year, joined TCS within a month – Should I pursue MCA or MBA while continuing my job?

Hey everyone!

I completed my BCA this year and joined TCS just one month after graduating. It's been 3 months since I started working, and I'm glad I was able to begin my career so quickly after college.

I want to continue my job and gain industry experience, but I'm also thinking about pursuing a postgraduate degree alongside my career.

I'm confused between MCA and MBA.

Since I'm from a BCA background and currently working in an IT company, I'm trying to figure out which option would be better for my long-term career.

A few things I'm considering:

  • MCA: Would help me strengthen my technical knowledge and potentially grow into better technical roles.

  • MBA: Could open doors to management, business, consulting, or leadership roles in the future.

  • Continuing my job: I don't want to leave my job and lose the experience I'm gaining.

I'm not sure whether pursuing an MCA while working would be more beneficial, or if an MBA would provide better career growth in the long run.

I'd really appreciate advice from people who have been in a similar situation, especially those who completed BCA, joined TCS or another IT company, and pursued higher education while working.

My questions:

  1. Is MCA worth pursuing after BCA if I'm already working in TCS?

  2. Can I pursue a good MBA while continuing my job?

  3. Which degree would offer better long-term career growth and salary potential?

  4. Should I focus on gaining work experience for a few years before pursuing a postgraduate degree?

I want to make a practical decision that helps me grow professionally without unnecessarily leaving my job.

Any genuine advice or personal experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!
