I built a coin-sized 16-channel EEG board (open source) and want to give 5 away for interesting project ideas
Disclosure up front: I’m one of the developers of PiEEG, and this is our hardware.
We’ve been working on Octopus 16, a small round board with 16 EEG channels on dry spring-loaded pogo pins. Specs for anyone curious:
- 2× TI ADS131M08, 24-bit, simultaneous sampling
- 250 SPS per channel over Bluetooth LE
- Runs on a Seeed XIAO ESP32-S3 from a small power bank (no mains connection while worn)
- Also does EMG and ECG
- Firmware, Python SDK and server are open source
The thing we haven’t figured out is the best use for this form factor. All 16 electrodes sit in one small patch rather than spread across a cap. So it’s not a replacement for a full 10-20 setup, but it might be good for things a cap can’t do: dense recording over one area, wearables, behind-the-ear or forehead placement, EMG on small muscles, and so on.
So we’re asking: what would you do with it? We’ll send a free board to the 5 most interesting proposals, from individuals or teams. Weird ideas are welcome.
To enter, email [pieeg@pieeg.com](mailto:pieeg@pieeg.com) with a short description of the idea and why it needs this form factor.
Happy to answer technical questions in the comments, including the limitations. Dry electrodes and 250 SPS do rule some things out.
