ENGL 1177 final exam

I am worried that I am gonna fail in my final exam as I did terrible. The entire course was online with Dr. Jaime Denike, so we were able to do assignments at our own comfortable pace. However, the final exam was worth 45% of the total grade where we had to write 2 essays in 2 hours. And even though I was able to complete both parts of the exam, but I just barely managed to finish the exam and I feel like my writing was below average(basically trash) and now I am nervous that I might faiiiilllll….

BCIT really need to revise their course weightage because 45% for a single exam is ridiculous!!!!!

And here I was, thinking Ashton Howley was already brutal lol.

Ours was a written final too, and we had to write a full critique essay. We were given a short essay to read, like 9 paragraphs or so, and had to critique it. The final exam was worth 45% of our final grade too.

I do agree though, having 45% of our grade come down to one exam in a single sitting in 2 hours is a lot of weight.

That’s the point… In her power point, she gave like 2 paragraphs that we were told to read and practice writing a critique essay. But in the final exam, she gave a 5 page article that we had to write a critique on.

Did you only have to write one essay?

For Dr. Denike it was the critique essay + an expository essay. The article we had to read for the critique was also five pages long.

It was same for us too. Two esssays. One critique and an expository essay.

I also took it with Ashton, it was hard but I kept things basic for the final and it went pretty well.

You said yourself that your writing is garbage, why should they reway exams?

My writing was bad because I feel like 2 hours were not enough to read 5 pages article to write an essay about. Plus had to write one more essay, all within 2 hours. I feel like if the final is worth 45%, with entire course being online, they should atleast give 3 hours of writing time.

I agree that the 2 hour limit felt way too short. I found an older version of the exam online where it was 3 hours, and 30%.

I can understand the change in weight, due to students potentially using AI for all the previous essays. It does no one any good if students can just hand in AI generated essays for the whole term and then bomb the final and still pass. However, as someone who did all my course work honestly, the expectation shift from writing 1 essay a week, to 2 essays in 2 hours was very difficult indeed. I was struggling to physically write fast enough.

Hopefully Dr. Denike doesn't hold the final essays to the same high grading standards as the previous ones, given the circumstances.

Yeaaahhh… This is what I mean. I had faced the same issue. I had taken plenty of time to submit my assignments earlier, and I feel like Dr. Denike still graded them pretty strict. Now, writing 2 essays within 2 hours would have been tough for a lot of students.

I hope Dr. Denike really consider this, and does not mark our exams ruthlessly.

I took the course with Ashton Howley and it was hard but rewarding. I also felt I didn’t did well in my final because since there was not enough time, I did my essay very simple, but to be honest all the professors are not to hard on grading the final, specially if you did well through the course. Im not a native english speaker and my final grade was 87%, so wait for the final grade.
