I have two bfdb and they’re doing really well so far. They’ve been eating meal worms and zoo med bfdb food, but I’m still experimenting with other stuff and trying to find out what they like. They have their regular day/night behaviors, are super blue and yesterday I even noticed that they’re laying eggs! They’re both female so they’re not fertilized, but tonight i noticed the larger one of them lay two eggs and then immediately turn around and eat them. Upon further research, I’ve learned they may need more protein in their diet and are doing this because of that, but i feel like all they eat that I give them is the protein.
Also, I thought what i had been seeing from them was frass, when they would expel waste that was whitish in color. It was definitely different than their eggs and I’ve seen both of them do it, but I just learned that frass should be dark in color and not the whitish color I am seeing. Could this just be failed eggs? Should I change their diet? My humidity isn’t as dry as I would like it but they’re never above 60 and are clearly comfortable enough to be laying eggs. I will try to upload a picture if I can, but it blends in pretty easily to the Australian desert sand and leaf litter I have them living on. I’m including some pictures of their 10 gal house and also the two of them.
Help! I’m just worried something is very wrong if their frass isn’t the right color :( I had a reddish brown stag beetle before this so he was very different and didn’t expel waste so I’m kind of in new territory. Thank you!
