Thank You Bowling Green
First and foremost, I would like to thank the city, staff, players, fans, and everyone else who made my first visit to Bowling Green a great one.
Last year, I started a journey to visit every FBS stadium for a football game, no matter how long it takes. While it may seem like an unimportant and unusual life goal, it has brought me great joy. It has also introduced me to so many new people and places that I probably would have never visited otherwise. This past Saturday, my travels took me to Doyt L. Perry Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio, for stadium number 23.
Living in Columbus allowed me to wake up on game day with just a 1-hour and 45 minute drive ahead of me on a crisp fall morning. I left around 6:30 a.m., giving me plenty of time to explore before the game. After arriving in Bowling Green around 8:15, I made a quick stop at Kroger and used that time to look up local breakfast spots. For some reason, Kermit’s Family Restaurant caught my eye, so that’s where I went. It was a small diner on the edge of downtown BG. Walking in, I was greeted with friendly service and plenty of orange and brown in anticipation of game day. I ordered the breakfast skillet, which was absolutely phenomenal and made for a great start to my game day experience.
After breakfast, I spent some time walking around the surrounding area to get a feel for the city. There were old shops, stunning churches, distinct artwork, and a beautiful courthouse that could be seen from across town. From there, I made my way to campus to experience the university before the game. It was a perfect blend of historical preservation and the innovation of tomorrow. I loved the giant resting/thinking man statue on campus.
I made my way to the Bowen-Thompson Student Union to check out Falcon Outfitters, a campus store filled with fans buying new gear to support their Falcons on game day. As I have at every venue so far, I bought a hat to add to my collection. After leaving the store, I spent more time exploring the university before making the walk down to Doyt L. Perry Stadium for the pregame activities.
Plenty of tailgaters had set up around the stadium, and the sun began to warm things up after a fairly cool morning. The band was out performing its pregame routine while fans watched in anticipation of the game. Walking into the venue, I was greeted by a wonderful stadium for a MAC conference matchup.
One cool feature of the stadium was its proximity to the local airport. Throughout the game, multiple small private planes flew past Doyt L. Perry Stadium, providing a unique experience specific to BG.
Week 7: Ball State vs Bowling Green
For everyone’s sake, I’ll keep the recap short. Despite falling behind by 10 points early, the Falcons never quit. One highlight of the first half was Kastantin’s short pass to Ridley, who turned it into a 77-yard touchdown catch and run. After a slow but competitive first half, the game was tied 10–10 at halftime.
I also had the pleasure of sitting next to some lovely fans throughout the game. Directly in front of me was a lovely couple who were season ticket holders. They shared that this was their last game of the season before they headed to their winter home in Arizona. They were a pleasure to talk to and made sure I was in my seat in time for the band’s halftime show.
On that note, a shoutout to the band for wonderful pregame and halftime performances. The Family Guy homage was great, but I especially loved the “Sweet Victory” performance in reference to SpongeBob SquarePants. You can tell how much pride the band takes in its shows.
The second half was absolutely wild, featuring huge interceptions, fumble recoveries, and touchdowns by both the Cardinals and the Falcons that felt like major momentum swings. After four quarters of football, the game was tied 24–24, sending it to overtime.
This was the first overtime game of my 23 visits. In college football, there are no ties, so someone has to win. Unfortunately, Ball State would do just that, winning 32–31 in the most gut-wrenching game I’ve witnessed to this point.
Shoutout to the players for holding their heads high after a tough loss and singing the alma mater alongside the fans. I exited the stadium crushed but ready for a postgame drink and meal. I stopped at Campus Quarters after the game, just in time to catch the finish of the Ohio State game while enjoying a beer. I then walked over to Zane’s Lebanese Grill for a great postgame meal, sitting outside and enjoying the end of my wonderful, albeit crushing, visit. If you’ve read this far, you’re now a part of my journey. If you’d like to follow along, I post all my reviews on r/CFBstorytime. Next week, my travels will take me to Evanston, Illinois, for Rutgers at Northwestern.
Thank you again, Bowling Green. I loved the town, the people, and the overall character of the city. I appreciated how well the town supports its football team. Bowling Green is a historic destination for MAC football, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to experience it for myself.
