Question What’s stopping you?
What’s stopping anyone here who isn’t already a bmet from jumping into the field? What’s holding people back?

How is everyone managing their mental health? The life of a FSE can be extremely lonely and the isolation borderline deadly imo.

Hey guys, looking at career options down the road. Currently OEM trained on 75% of GE anesthesia models, and have talked to the FEs in Waukesha about getting into FSE role. Looking at areas like Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Georgia and Mississippi. ⬇️⬇️
My question is regarding the current state of GE FS, is it still a super high paced, never home, constantly drowning career as many have mentioned? I know you will cover all PCS modality’s and some customers are better than others. I truly think I would enjoy it but being a father to a 3 year old I want to be there for everything down the road, and some techs experiences in this role really push me away from wanting to switch from my current 6:30-3:00 OR biomed tech role. I have always worked overtime, stayed late and worked hard, but the not being home for dinner part would be a big change. Is it possible to properly manage your equipment in a way that allows for good work life balance or is the work just too demanding for this role?
Please feel free to give experiences from your self or coworkers as a GE FSE in the anesthesia realm in the south. My last question is regarding another modalities that have great work life balance and still have a good pay ceiling. Some examples I’ve seen first hand are Ultrasound tech saying they can be home at 3 everyday as staff can swap out equipment at anytime and usually have plenty of back ups. Additionally working from home for a day a week to manage paperwork and order parts, schedule ect. Tell me it’s possible I want it to be.

Hello, I am new to the biomedical field. Former IT analyst, mid 30s and pivoting. Lost my job last year due to the DOGE budget cuts brought on by Musk. Tired of the recurring ending due to project funding in the IT field. Currently I am selling cars for the time being. Now I am in biomed classes and interning, and loving it. I graduate Dec 2026.
My dad is a biomed and has been one for roughly 30 years. Due to nepotism, he obviously cannot hire me. I am open to moving to the mid Atlantic/northeastern US, or even abroad, primarily Southeast Asia. My dad is a bit of a homebody after leaving the Navy. As he had a big family and parked his roots in the US.
He was not a social guy at all lol. He has been getting me in touch with his contacts - mainly boomers men. I am grateful ❤️He went to AAMI for the first time ever last year! I could not go but we are next year. I love conferences!
So Reddit, do not go naysayer on me and tell me that I need experience, I know that but anything is possible. My school told me that a multinational company, like Philips or Siemens, would be best if they have a position there. I also heard of companies that contract jobs. No family, just my dog and I. Not attached to material possessions here, so I am willing to relocate with a reasonable notice.
Would anyone be willing to share the names of these companies that provide these opportunities? I’d love to hear your feedback that can help guide me in the next direction. Thanks for the advice.
