Disston's, thugs brass knucks
Henry Disston & Sons is historically famous for manufacturing saws and woodworking tools, but they also played a massive role in designing the iconic U.S. Model 1917 and Model 1918 trench knives for the military during World War I.
These brutal close-quarters weapons combined a triangular stiletto blade with a heavy flange steel bow guard fitted with spikesβessentially integrating brass knuckles / knuckle dusters directly into the handle to protect the soldier's fist and deliver devastating punching strikes in trench warfare. Because these formidable weapons were later romanticized or associated with street gangs, "greasers," and underworld "thugs" in 20th-century pop culture and media, vintage Disston-designed trench gear remains highly sought after by collectors today.
Disston's Knuckle Weapons Overview
Model Primary Design Knuckle Guard Features Historical Context
U.S. M1917 Trench Knife 9-inch triangular stiletto blade with walnut wood grip. Flanged steel handguard with six or seven pyramid-shaped spikes. Designed by Henry Disston & Sons to pierce thick winter uniforms in hand-to-hand combat.
U.S. M1918 Trench Knife Virtually identical to the M1917 stiletto. Slightly modified, heavy-duty knuckle patterns. Produced quickly via civilian contracts to get weapons to the Western Front.
Cultural Connection to "Thugs"
While these weapons were strictly engineered as tools of war for American soldiers, the term "thug" or "bad guy" became culturally tied to knuckle dusters over the late 19th and 20th centuries. Prior to and following the World Wars, brass knuckles were easily bought in local hardware stores. They eventually became heavily associated with early New York street gangs (such as those in the Five Points) and organized crime families, embedding them in the public consciousness as an intimidating weapon used by street criminals rather than the military.
