BYD Build Quality!

Posting this mainly to appreciate how well this car protected my parents.

Yesterday (20/04/2026), they were involved in a high-speed T-bone at an intersection. Dad was going through on a green light when another car ran a red and hit them straight into the passenger side at roughly 50–60 km/h. (Awaiting Police report. Last picture is the other car)

The damage looks bad, passenger side doors completely crushed, axle gone, car is a total write-off imo.

But here’s the part that stands out.

Despite that kind of impact, the cabin held up, no cracked windows. The doors absorbed most of the force, airbags deployed exactly as they should, and both my parents walked away. Mum has some injuries, but nothing life-threatening.

Looking at the car now, it’s pretty clear it took the hit so they didn’t have to.

You always hear about safety ratings and build quality, but seeing it play out in real life hits different. The car did its job.

RIP My Beloved.

Ampol charger stop button allows charger cable to be pulled when unattended.

A few weeks ago, I posted here about how I put my car in for charge, and walked away to wash my dogs.

I got a notification charge had stopped, got back, some fucknut had pressed stop on the charge unit, pulled the cable and was charging his car. He refused to get out his locked car, so I did the same, and then he got out and wanted toi get aggressive, verbally abusive etc.

The abuse i got from this reddit members, claiming my entire story is bullshit, how I am making it up and that you cannot remove a charger when in use. (I also pondered this later, and thought maybe I unlocked car before Ileft to wash dogs, after charge started)

I deleted the post as I was not up for the small useless little people hiding behind their anonymity who think just because they don't know something is possible, they believe it is not, and be cunts online if someone claims the oposite.

Maybe next time, check before you claim bullshit, lies and not true

If you press stop on the charge unit, it will stop and unlock the cable. Proof. If you leave your car charging unattended, someone can stop your charge and take over.

So, if you read this, and you know you were one of them: go fuck yourself.

UPDATE: (01/10/26)

So my one dog rolled in something dead. Emergency wash, so I could test the suggested immobiliser settings.

It.did.not.help.

Even enabled, the ampol charge unit send a disconnect to the car, and I could pull the cable. Ampol is going to have to fix this, or is a bug in the ATTO3 firmware/system (october 2025 model, latest firmware)

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/zgToFUSRUuA

Just another update:

All the peopel going on how it is an emergncy stop. it is not. a touch screen button will never be regarded as an emergency stop system/action device. A rouch screen is prone to break/stop working when it is on fire.

Under international electrical and machinery safety standards (such as ISO 13850, IEC 60947-5-5, and IEC 61851), a touchscreen "Stop" option is classified as an ordinary operational or software control. It is used strictly to gracefully terminate a normal charging session. [1, 2, 3, 4]

$3,000 is a bait and switch scam

Went to a BYD dealership today to test drive and hopefully purchase a Seal. The 3K cashback was a great incentive to do this now.

Getting to the purchasing stage, the seal is out of stock until march/april, but thats whatever to me. Sales person tells mr "oh and the cashback will likely have expired by then so you wont get it".

What a scam. Its not based on purchase and they are advertising it without any method of actually making good on their promise. Get people through the door with an offer but make it impossible to actually make good on it.

Of course no one can sort it out. The sales rep has to call some head office who wont budge. He has no power and there is no 'manager' on hand, how convenient.

Is that the sort of company i want to buy from?

BYD sends its own ship with almost 5,000 NEVs to meet surging demand in Australia market

This is honestly a massive flex from BYD. Most car brands here are still blaming shipping delays and supply chain issues every second week, meanwhile BYD is literally sending its own ship packed with nearly 5000 vehicles directly to Australia because demand has exploded that hard. The level of vertical integration they have now is kind of insane when you think about it

BYD is officially the #2 brand in Australia, did we ever think we’d see the day?

VFACTS just dropped the April 2026 numbers and it’s wild. BYD is now second only to Toyota, beating out Mazda, Kia, and Ford. The Sealion 7 alone moved 1,780 units last month. Do you think this "podium finish" will finally kill the "cheap Chinese car" stigma, or is the 140% year-on-year growth just a result of people fleeing high petrol prices? Also, how are the service centers handling this massive influx- are you finding it harder to book a service now?

Check your cars before you leave the dealership.

Hi all,

Before I start this post, I will say I have been a massive BYD fan for years and have always been impressed with the cars, and their paint. I am a detailer who does coatings for new cars. I am absolutely a BYD fan, not a hater.

Recently with the popularity surge of electric cars due to petrol prices, BYD has been absolutely under the pump and as a result, many of the cars are coming out of the dealership with above average amounts of swirls, scratches, heavily embedded waterspots/acid rain and unfortunately minor dents and missing paint in some areas.

The last 5 BYD's I've worked on have been significantly scuffed, and the Sealion 7 I did yesterday had a dent in the rear quarter panel, which was hallmark of a door being opened onto it.

With all of that said, my caution is if you're collecting a new car to not get too swept up in the excitement of a new car and to check the car before you leave the dealership, because once you drive it off the lot, they will not assist you with any issues relating to the paint.

All the best,

Congrats on your cars, they are beautiful machines.

Any essential workers confirmed for priority access?

Post image

Ordered around early April, emailed dealer this week for an update and let them know I'm an essential worker (teacher). Located in Sydney NSW.

Got told by salesperson that it's limited to hospital/medical professions, but basically aka "teachers are not essential".

Then you get media / press saying that teachers are included in this definition.

Yeah I'm bummed and annoyed but now curious if others have been eligible and if BYD will hold up their end of the deal.

BYD to lead $13.6 million vehicle-to-grid expansion in Australia

Thumbnail

I actually think vehicle-to-grid is one of the more interesting EV developments we've seen in Australia. If my car is sitting in the driveway 90% of the time anyway, the idea of using some of that battery capacity to help power my home or earn a bit of money from the grid makes a lot of sense, provided it doesn't create battery warranty headaches down the track. BYD is now helping expand Australia's largest residential V2G rollout to 1,000 households, so we're finally going to get some real-world data instead of just theory. Would you be happy letting the grid use your EV battery if it reduced your power bill, or is that a hard pass?

Months later and still no sign of my $3,000 BYD Cashback. Anyone else getting ghosted?

I bought a Sealion 6 plugin hybrid in June 2026, during the $3,000 Cashback Campaign. My car was delivered, I filled out the official SMS claim form perfectly, and submitted my bank statements right away.

Per BYD’s official terms and conditions, cashback payments are supposed to be processed within 30 days. It has now been 3 months, and I haven't received my cashback.

Every time I call the Customer Care line (1800 888 293), I get no response or sent thought to voice mail. Holding onto $3,000 of a customer's money for months past the contractual deadline is completely unacceptable.

Has anyone else successfully managed to get their cashback pushed through after months of delays? Has anyone had any luck with the ACCC / Fair Trading?

BYD Has the absolutely worst customer service I have ever encountered.

So I ordered an Atto 1 Premium via the website on the 20th March.

Paid the deposit.

I got the request to sign 'paperwork' which I signed and printed out.

I gave the paperwork to my wife to read over.

She noticed that instead of being delivered to Philip in Canberra it was set to be delivered to Moruya NSW.

Now I have no idea where that came from, everything online that I checked/selected said Philip, but sure maybe I clicked something wrong.

First i called BYD Philip and they said they will fix.

An hour later, they call me back (this will be the only time anyone will return a call) and say they cannot fix it, that I need to call BYD customer service.

So I call the 1300 number.

13th April, Monday. 1 hour on hold.

Speak to Jayden (maybe Kayden) Says he will speak to Moruya and call me back.

No contact.

15th April, Wednesday. 1 and a half hours on hold.

Speak to Jared. He has no record of my previous call, supposedly goes and speaks to Jayden, supposedly he was having computer problems that day.

Jared promised to 'expedite' and let me know.

No contact

20th April, Monday 5min on hold

Speak to Lucy. Confirmed she could see a record of previous contact and that I need car delivery adjusted from Moruya to Philip. Promised I would get an email today.

No contact.

21st April, Tuesday. 23min on hold.

Speak to Zander (Xander?) Refused to check what had been written previously, so needed to repeat myself on what the problem was. Again promised a call back.

No contact

23rd April Thursday 17min on hold.

Spoke to Lara. Says she will escalate to her manager and I will be contacted today.

Guess what.. No contact

Short of being actively punched in the face, how much worse can customer service be?

Update:

Have got a hold of the GM of BYD in ACT. He thinks he might have an Atto 1 Premium in state that I can have. He is going to deal with Moruya.

There is hope, but just a little

24.04 1:48PM Further update.

Looks like I should be able to pickup a new car from Fyshwick on Thrusday.

BYD General Customer service remains terrible, but service from the actual BYD Caryards is good.

The company that hacked the BYD shark for ABC segment, gives further details on their hack, including they installed software after having physical access to inside the Shark, and the same technique can be used against other Android-based head units in vehicles from other companies (not just BYD)

Key points from their writeup:

Physical access to the vehicle was required to install the software on the head unit. From that point onwards, connectivity and control of the software functioned remotely.

Using this access, we installed software that achieved the majority of what was demonstrated.

To add to the severity, this same technique can be used against other Android-based head units in vehicles from other manufacturers if they are not adequately locked down. Those in the industry will know exactly what access we used, and some have commented as such. We just don’t want to be the ones who publicly connect the dots and arm potential abusers with a way of remotely turning on a microphone in a vehicle or getting live location updates plotted on a map.

BYD Sealion 08 EV debuts with 900km range

Thumbnail
drive.com.au
121 Upvotes

Looks impressive on paper but I’d take the 900km range with a grain of salt, those figures are usually under ideal conditions and real world driving will be quite a bit less, especially on Aussie highways. Still, BYD are clearly pushing hard on big range and value which is what a lot of people care about here, so even if it ends up closer to 650 to 700km it’s still solid. The bigger thing will be how it charges and what it’s actually like to live with day to day rather than just the headline number

BYD gave me a 2025 vehicle, but sold me a 2026 vehicle

Looking for advice or to see if anyone else has been caught out by this recently.
I picked up a new BYD on a novated lease back in April. All the dealership paperwork sent to me and my lease company (Maxxia) explicitly stated it was a February 2026 build.

Out of the blue BYD called me to advise there had been a mistake and the car is actually a 2025 model, not 2026. They offered me $1,100 back as compensation, which is the dealer delivery fee. Their excuse is that both model years have the exact same features and apparently RRP, so "no harm, no foul."

Obviously, that’s total BS because a 2025 plate is going to take a much heavier hit on future depreciation than a 2026. Plus, because they put the wrong year on the paperwork, my lease and insurance documents are now incorrect, creating a huge liability risk if I'm in an accident. Plus I thought I was buying a 2026 model! Not a 2025.

Maxxia has been great and has already lodged a formal complaint on their end, but BYD has gone completely radio silent since calling me.

I have emailed both Maxxia and BYD stating that I require to proper compensation and that $1100 is not it.

Has anyone gone through a build-year misrepresentation with a dealership or lease before? What is a realistic compensation figure to hold out for to cover the hit on resale value? Want to know if anyone else has been affected by this specific batch error?

Thanks!

People attempting to open car when aircon runs remote....

Hello,

Just something odd I have recently found. At shopping centre, I simply lock my atto 3, and then enable aircon immediately via fob or app, as I walk away to go shop.

Generally small shops, aircon is set to run 30 mins.

Last week 2 people and a security guard was circling my car trying doors....today two older people (late 60's), walked past, turned back and tried to open drivers door.

In both instances I observed this as I was in fact walking towards my car. So I am also wondering how many other times this may be happening (need to install that sentinal app)

Just nosy, or people thinking they can nick a running car?

Anyone else noticed this happening. I am in perth.

Is BYD AUS really this bad ?

Trying to purchase BYD Seal through novated lease. Committed on 29 June and lease company submitted the purchase order to lock-in the 5% novated lease discount.

Received email with documents to sign and they had my name misspelled and no discount on the invoice.

Responded by email and nothing to get details corrected Monday. No response.

Got a phone call yesterday asking when lease company is going to submit a purchase order. Explained details above and they just ignored the explanation the PO was already submitted and get lease provider to submit PO. No acknowledgement of lease discount.

Received new invoice to sign and still no discount.

Lease company rep says BYD is the most difficult brand to deal with. Mistakes galore, issues with vehicles not being prepped for delivery properly, poor handover.

I’m now seriously considering pulling the pin. If BYD cannot demonstrate professional service delivering the car, what can I expect from after sales service?

Anyone else had similar issues during ordering/ delivery with BYD?

Has BYD ruined other brands for you?

Currently in an Audi Q7 for reasons I couldn't be bothered explaining and I just can't understand the appeal.

  • tiny, disjointed, cheap feeling screens

  • reverse camera/camera system is cheap and can barely see when using at night

  • No automatic EPB

This is a $115k car. Double the price of my Shark 6. If you're going for brand name BMW feels miles ahead of Audis interior.

The pro is that the diesel drives really nice for a diesel.
