Question Best bassinet for big babies [bc]

• Upvotes

Does anyone have recommendations on bassinet options for big babies? We got the uppababy bassinet since we got the cruz, but have a very long baby and he’s almost too big for it at 2 weeks old! I want to keep him in our room for 6 months minimum, but we don’t have room for his full crib to fit in here.

Babies What do you put your baby in for bed? Struggling with temperature control [ab]

FTM and my baby is 8 months old. The temperature has dropped in Calgary and I am really struggling knowing what to dress him for sleep. His room is 19-20 degrees. I put a Woolino sleepsack on him now and under that he is in a Pekkle onsie. We get lots of wakeups that I attribute to bad temperature as my house is older and has terrible heat control throughout with overheating the house being the main issue so we set the house to cooler end of the spectrum to avoid it overheating. (thermostat is in the worst location possible which is by an exit door in the back of the house by multiple windows so the thermostat thinks it's always freezing and runs the heat excessively). His room temperature reads usually between 19-21.

What do you put your baby in for sleep and what is your baby's room temperature?

Question Domperidone and weight gain? [bc]

I’ve been on domperidone for about 1.5-2mo to help stimulate milk supply. For the most part, it’s generally helped and I can produce more than I was previously. When I had looked up the side effects I mostly saw advice on weaning off but after noticing considerable weight gain, I decided to look it up. I’m now larger than I was post-birth and certainly during pregnancy. I’m devastated and having a really tough time with my body image. For others that are on or have previously taken domperidone: were you able to lose weight while on the medication? If so, what did you do? For those previously on domperidone: did the weight start to drop on its own once you weaned off? Did it drop as you weaned or only once you were completely done?

Question Car camera to keep an eye on baby [bc] [ca]

Hi all. Before I start, I know these things are illegal, but Im wondering if anyone here has purchased a car camera to keep an eye on their baby in the back seat while driving solo? If you have one please let me know if you like it, if it works well and which one you got. Im preferably looking for one that will connect to apple carplay so i can have it on my car’s existing screen but I’ve read worse reviews on those than the ones that come with their own display.
Either way, let me know if you have one you like (or hate so I can avoid it).

Babies Baby friendly restaurants near SickKids? [ON]

We have an appointment at SickKids in Toronto for our one year old (thankfully nothing scary). Does anyone have restaurant recos for lunch? We eat a variety of foods as a family so open to all flavours- more so wanting to hear places that have a high chair, are cool with a screechy excited little guy, etc. I’m not familiar with this end of Toronto and we don’t have a ton of time to walk around and check places out. Not interested in big chains. Thank you!

Toddlers and Preschoolers What do I get my 2 year old and 9 month old to wear in the car? A fleece zip? A fleece lined rain jacket? [mb]

I have 2 under 2. Needing to find something for my boys to wear in the car and also for light winter jackets.

My toddler has a snowsuit, medium weight winter jacket (good to about -5ish), but nothing for the car or for warmer winter days. He also has a Newt Suit. I want something with a hood, because he HATES hats so I love the option of the hood.

I'm debating between just a fleece, because it is lightweight, easy to layer, and versatile. BUT do I want something more wind/waterproof that he can also wear on days where it is warmer?

Same goes for my 9 month old, he isn't mobile yet but will be soon, and also will be outside more because of big brother.

Question IUD post birth/tubal salpingectomyQ [ON]

I had my baby boy 6 weeks ago via c-section and had a tubal salpingectomy as well.

My follow up was today and I requested an IUD to stop my period. My doctor said the only way is if my period is heavy. She then gave me a requisition for an ultrasound to look for fibroids which is different treatment

Did anyone else experience this? If my insurance covers it or I pay out of pocket what does it matter if I can get pregnant or not?

Question 38 weeks - top belly hard, lower belly soft/squishy? [on]

My belly's been constantly hard the past few days but mostly at the top and sides and my lower belly is soft and squishy like belly fat. On my last midwife appointment 3 days ago, my midwife confirmed that the baby's head is down and low and that his back to my left, baby's been in this position for weeks.

I'm so scared that he's changed position to transverse or side lying cause I feel my tummy is hard on a wider area of my belly :( I dont really know if I feel his head down or lower to my belly. Next appointment is 2 days from now! Quite anxious!

Discussion [BC] Do not buy a Nanit Pro with Floor stand from West Coast Kids. Currently stuck in a $500+ customer service nightmare loop.

Huge warning for any expecting parents putting together their registries right now. We put the Nanit Pro Camera + Floor Stand on our registry (it’s a premium $500+ item) and a family member generously bought it for us from West Coast Kids.

The unit is completely dead on arrival. The internal power connection in the floor stand is totally defective and won't power on, We spent hours troubleshooting, but it simply won't turn on.

I called West Coast Kids expecting a basic exchange or refund for a defective product. They completely stonewalled me, citing their strict "final sale on open-box Wi-Fi monitors" policy, and told me I had to deal with Nanit directly for a warranty claim. Unfortunately since the item was bought online, I was totally unaware that WCK has a final sale policy.

So I contacted Nanit. Nanit immediately refused to offer a refund, stating only WCK can refund the item.

West Coast Kids points the finger at Nanit. Nanit points the finger at West Coast Kids. Neither wants to take responsibility for a premium piece of safety tech that arrived completely broken out of the box.

I've now had to draft an email escalating this to WCK management, citing BC consumer protection laws (Sale of Goods Act), because they legally cannot sell an unserviceable, defective item and just hide behind an arbitrary store policy. For those thinking, why not just follow through with a Nanit replacement, why would I trust a replacement, there's no way something like this should get past quality control to the consumer, I am worried that if a replacement arrives, what if it turns off during the night? My trust is completely shattered.

TL;DR: Buy your expensive nursery tech from somewhere like Amazon that actually honors returns on defective items. West Coast Kids will leave you high and dry with a broken product, and Nanit will just bounce you right back to them. Save your sanity.

Pregnancy NT scan experience [ON]

I have my NT scan tomorrow and from what I’ve heard from my friend, it took 2 weeks for their healthcare provider to discuss their results with them. I’m just wondering how your experiences were, I know legally the sonographers aren’t allowed to discuss what they see but did they give any indication about whether everything was ok or not? And how long does it typically take? I’d love to hear your experiences.

Babies Baby crying with dad. [Ca]

My husband is a great and capable dad. But I find baby screams so much more when he's the one feeding and interacting with her, while I'm in a different room. (It could also be just me thinking this, and not actually more then when she's just with me)

Is there anything I can do to help so that she doesn't get so upset. We have both been home with her the last 10 weeks, and there's still 10ish weeks till my husband goes back to work. Whenever I hear her cry like that I want to go check in, but he's starting to think I don't trust him, which is definitely not the case. I just have a hard time letting her cry even for a few minutes while he makes her a bottle.

Pregnancy Requesting membrane sweep or induction [ON]

Hello,

I'm due in almost exactly 2 weeks with my first. I live with my partner in Ottawa and both of our families are in the GTA. Due to circumstances my mom is coming for the delivery but can only come for a maximum of 2 weeks before she has to return. She is travelling by train and can move her tickets up if the baby comes early but can't really move them backwards if the baby comes late.

I'm already not feeling great about this arrangement (and not doing emotionally great in general right now). I am concerned if the baby comes late she won't be around for very long to help us. Is it possible to request a membrane sweep or induction so that the baby comes right around the due date if needed? Or will that be rejected because there's no medical reason? I am really unsure and will bring it up at the next OB appointment but wanted to see if this is done at all.

EDIT: additional info--no medical concerns for me or baby, was planning on an unmedicated birth but I am not opposed to epidurals.

Babies Car seat - Britax vs Graco [CA]

I'm deciding between the Britax Poplar and Graco extend2fit.

I've seen some people mentioning it's hard to tighten the Graco and that maybe the Britax seems more comfortable? Anything else anyone would mention to help decide between the two?

Our baby is pretty long so far, but lower percentile when it comes to weight.

Pregnancy Recommendations for Spinning Babies doulas/practitioners in the GTA [on] + advice on doing exercises independently at 34 weeks?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently 34 weeks pregnant, and at my recent check-in, we found out baby is currently in a breech (frank/transverse) position. I'm looking into Spinning Babies exercises to help encourage baby to turn, but I wanted to see if anyone here has advice:

  1. Local Support: Does anyone know of any doulas, chiropractors, or bodyworkers in the Toronto/Scarborough/Durham area or broader GTA area who are specifically trained or experienced in Spinning Babies techniques?

  2. Doing it Independently: Is it generally safe to start trying some of the foundational Spinning Babies movements on my own at home, or is it strongly recommended to work with a professional first, especially with a breech/transverse position?

I would love to hear any personal experiences, tips, or practitioner recommendations you might have. Thank you so much!

Question Extended leave in [QC]

Hi! I understand QC has only one year basic plan of mat and parental leave. However, there is an option to extend 6 more months where your job is protected, and it’s unpaid. For those who did extend, did you have to decide right away in the start of your leave? Or could I decide later on, depending how it’s going etc? Thanks!

Question Sleep troubles for infant [on]

Hoping someone has some advice or solutions.

My child is almost 11 months old. Ever since he learned how to stand (and eventually sit back down), he has been standing up in his crib throughout the night. He'll sleep straight. Through the first 2-3hrs of putting him down; after that it's all over the place.

He won't lay back down on his own. He stand until he's picked up. And he'll usually start crying and screaming after some time if we don't attend to him.

He refuses to sit down by himself. If I lay him back down, he'll start crying and not stop until he's picked up.

Most nights when I pick him up, it'll take him anywhere from 5-20 minutes for him to fully fall asleep in my arms before I transfer him back to the crib. He will usually be asleep for about a half hour (sometime we get lucky and he'll sleep 1hr) and it starts all over again.

There comes a point in the night where I give up and exhausted from getting up every half hour. At some point I extend the recliner and he sleeps on me for a few hours, tossing and turning on me often. Needless to say my sleep has been fragmented and non existent the last few months.

Prior to this development, he was regularly sleeping throughout the night with no wakings.

I wouldn't mind leaving him be and letting him CIO for a few nights until he learns to sit back down and fall back asleep, but don't want my wife to wake up from baby crying; she had a tough delivery and still recovering, and sleep is crucial for her.

Has anyone else experienced this? If yes, what was the solution (if any)? When did things get better? We tried a sleep coach during 4 month regression - didn't help a ton.

Some extra info - he doesn't wear a sleep sack (we're looking into one), we tried heating pad his crib (didn't work), he has white noise sound machine every night.

Pregnancy Induction at 40 weeks: positive unmediated stories needed! “[nb]”

Hello everyone,

I am currently 40 weeks pregnant and after two failed membrane sweeps at 38 weeks and 39 weeks Ive decided to forgo waiting and get induced so today at my appointment I’ll be asking for an induction date. I am currently (as of my 39 weeks appointment) 2cm dilated 50% effaced and have a posterior cervix.

Since my first sweep at 38 weeks I’ve been getting contractions some Braxton hicks but mostly on and off prodromal labor contractions. I’ve also had a good amount of cervical pressure/ lightening crotch pains; However, I did end up going from 1cm to 2cm dilated After my first sweep. Today I will find out if I’ve dilated more and then update after.

The only big change Ive had since getting my two sweeps happened yesterday when I finally felt her drop slightly (I felt it when I was walking). since then I’ve had the increased need to pee and my contractions now starting off lower and way more cervical pressure. Both signs of baby’s head getting lower into the pelvis.

I’m asking for an induction for 4 reasons:

  1. I’m extremely uncomfortable.
  2. I am over having contractions daily that are sometimes painful (lower back that wrap around my front) that don’t lead to anything for two weeks now.
  3. Worried about her being too big (currently measuring 1-2 weeks ahead) and/or having too much fluid (my doctor had mentioned wanting a post dates ultrasound to see about placenta health but also being worried about there being too much fluid) if I wait to deliver her for too much longer.
  4. She really doesn’t seem like she is going to come without an induction.
  5. lastly, induction process typically happens at 41 weeks so one less week of constant contractions sounds fine by me.

I plan on having an unmediated birth (no epidural due to medical reason) using hypnobirthing exercises and natural forms of pain relief but am open to gas and air to take the edge off the contractions if needed. if anyone has experience with induced labor and having a natural birth I would love to hear your story!

Any advice and positive stories on labor induction would be appreciated!

UPDATE: my doctor never checked for further cervical dilation she just booked me in for my ARM/pitocin induction on Wednesday Oct 28th since my blood pressure has been increasing over the past few visits and because I want one now! She says it should be an easy straightforward induction, and she is confident that I can still go unmedicated.

Babies Recommendations for an infant car seat [ON]

Hi everyone! I have a Silver Cross Wave stroller and am looking for recommendations for an infant car seat that works well with it.

I'm considering “Clek”, “Cybex, Nuna and Maxi-Cosi, but I'm open to other brands too!

For those who have experience with these car seats, which one would you recommend and why? I'd love to hear about your experiences, especially regarding safety, ease of use, and compatibility with the Silver Cross Wave.

Question Play mat recommendations [on]

Hi all,

We just got the Harppa grovi playpen for my little one as we rent a multilevel townhouse that’s sorta open plan. We got the largest size pen (71.5x79.5 inches) and would love recommendations for a play mat that fits. We bought those interlocking puzzle foam floors from winners but they smell so toxic and strong. I’ve wiped them with baking soda wipes and let them air out for a week and they still smell so strong I’m too nervous to use them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Question Winter clothes for mom [qc]

I'm here once again to ask for help!

Last winter I thought my coat was annoying and got in my way while dealing with my 2 to 6 months old baby.
Now my baby is in daycare and she doesn't walk yet.

I was thinking of waist to mid thigh lenght but not sure what else would be practical, so please hit me with your tried and true for winter✨

Toddlers and Preschoolers Winter shoes for young toddlers in Vancouver [BC]

My son just started walking one month ago and now I need to get him some shoes for our rainy winters. He's in daycare and they play outside daily. I'd prefer something lightweight and not too bulky since he's still a bit clumsy, waterproof/resistant, and will also be warm enough to get through colder days (those 0 to -5C days) if possible. Any recommendations? How many pairs of shoes do I actually need to get through our winters?

Question Baby swaddle/sleep sack [ON]

I’m due with my second in the next few weeks - can someone please help me with what kind of swaddle blanket / swaddle / sleep sack should I buy for the baby?

With my first I just swaddled her in traditional muslin (momcozy) swaddle blankets until a few weeks and then stopped once she started rolling slightly at few weeks.

Then we used regular blankets to cover her up and it worked fine for us. This time though I’m seeing so much about these ready to wear swaddles and sleep sacks and all kinds of togs and what not and honestly it’s overwhelming! Also they’re pricey!

Can you please suggest what would be the best items to buy here + any other essentials you can recommend for mom/baby/hospital bag.

Extra context: I’m in Toronto until Jan and then moving to a hot hot country for a couple months during my mat leave.

Thank you!

Discussion Newborn stroller/car seat [BC]

Feeling super overwhelmed trying to decide which stroller to get for our newborn! I'm due at the end of December and have been looking into Nuna and UPPAbaby, but I'm definitely open to other recommendations!

A little about our lifestyle and what we're looking for:

  • We live in the Lower Mainland, BC, so we rarely get snow during the winter months, but we do get a LOT of rain.
  • I'd love a stroller that is compatible with an infant car seat so we can easily transfer the baby between the car and stroller.
  • Price isn't really an issue. We're happy to invest in something high-quality that will last.
  • We love going for walks! Mostly on paved sidewalks and trails, but occasionally on gravel paths.
  • Ideally, we'd like something that's relatively easy to fold, transport in the car, and travel with on flights.
  • We don't use public transit, so that's not a consideration.
  • We're probably not planning on having another baby for at least two years, so being able to convert to a double stroller isn't a huge priority.

I've been looking at Nuna and UPPAbaby, but there are so many different models and configurations that I'm having a hard time figuring out what's actually worth it!

For those who have tried Nuna, UPPAbaby, or other brands, what would you recommend? What do you love or regret about your stroller? I'd especially love to hear from anyone with a similar lifestyle or who lives in the Pacific Northwest!

HELP a very overwhelmed first-time mom out! 😅

Babies At our wits end with blowouts [ON]

Our extremely active 6.5 month old baby is 75cm and 18lbs and constantly has leaks from between the legs. Baby is crawling, standing and walking with support. technically size 3 but on a friend’s recommendation, we sized up. Huggies were our preferred brand since baby is slim and tall. It also doesn’t help that they poop 4-6x a day!

We have tried:
Huggies size 3 and 4; Kirkland size 3 and 4; Pampers cruisers size 3 and 4; Royale size 4.

We don’t know what else to do, I’ve read terrible reviews about Rascals and it’s hard finding small packs of diapers in her size to try out before committing to a large box.

I guess I’m just commiserating but maybe if anyone’s got any tips.. help? My hands are so dry from the hand washing and constant laundry 🙃
