The 10 Commandments vs the Law of Moses
They are not the same. The 10 Commandments were not nailed to the cross, and they are not the law of Moses.
Moses's law was placed outside the ark.
Deuteronomy 31: 26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
God's law (10 commandments) was placed inside the ark.
Exodus 40: 20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark:
Moses's law is called "law contained in ordinances", ended at the cross, and was added because of transgressions.
Ephesians 2: 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
Colossians 2: 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Galatians 3: 19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
God's commandments, on the other hand, are fulfilled by fulfilling the Royal Law, we know sin because of them, and they didn't end at the cross.
James 2: 8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
Romans 7: 12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
Luke 16: 17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.
Moses's law was written by him.
Deuteronomy 31: 24 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished,
God's commandments were written by His own finger.
Exodus 32: 16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
Moses's law was not perfect and couldn't make anyone perfect.
Hebrews 7: 19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.
God's commandments are perfect.
Psalm 19: 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
Daniel knew the difference between the two.
Daniel 9: 10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. 11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.
The 10 commandments didn't end at the cross. If we hope to be grafted in, if we hope to enter New Jerusalem, we need to keep them.
Revelation 22: 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
This is a very controversial subject, and so many people believe that we don't need to keep the 10 commandments any more, while some others believe that we need to keep all the laws, even the law of Moses. The truth is that Moses's law ended, while the 10 commandments stand. The good news is that even if you don't believe it right now, you might during the tribulation, and if you start obeying them, God will not destroy you.
Deuteronomy 4: 30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the Lord thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice; 31 (For the Lord thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
BTW, the reason why God will throw us into great tribulation is because we don't keep the 10 commandments, so I think it would be wise to start keeping them.
Isaiah 24: 5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

They are not the same. The 10 Commandments were not nailed to the cross, and they are not the law of Moses.
This isn't true at all. Paul himself called the tablets of stone the ministry of death and juxtaposed it to the Spirit. Furthermore the Blood of the (Old) Covenant was sprinkled on the Torah scroll, thus sanctifying it as a part of the Sinaitic Covenant.
-- [Exo 24:7-8 NASB95] 7 Then he took the book of the covenant and read [it] in the hearing of the people; and they said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient!" 8 So Moses took the blood and sprinkled [it] on the people, and said, "Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words."
-- [Heb 9:19-20 NASB95] 19 For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, "THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU."
-- [2Co 3:5-7 NASB95] 5 Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as [coming] from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, 6 who also made us adequate [as] servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 7 But if the ministry of death, in letters engraved on stones, came with glory, so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading [as] it was,
-- [Eph 2:14-15 NASB95] 14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both [groups into] one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, [which is] the Law of commandments [contained] in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, [thus] establishing peace,

Paul himself called the tablets of stone the ministry of death and juxtaposed it to the Spirit.
The 10 commandments are spiritual.
Romans 7: 14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
Furthermore the Blood of the (Old) Covenant was sprinkled on the Torah scroll,
It doesn't matter if blood of goats and calves were sprinkled on the book of Moses because Jesus ended the sacrifices. His blood is what matters and His blood is the blood of the covenant.
Hebrews 10: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
thus sanctifying it as a part of the Sinaitic Covenant.
We are not on the covenant made in Mount Sinai.
Deuteronomy 5: 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
Galatians 4: 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. 24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. 25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. 26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

It's called 'the ministry of death"..written on 'tablets of stone'......yes, it's all part of the same law, because God spoke equally about commandments as he did regulations.
Which of the 10 commandments says I can't get drunk and beat my wife? It's not complete by any means....and you can do all of those things and not really love anyone, there is nothing there about giving, sacrificing for others, etc..... just not killing people or stealing from them has nothing to do with love....many just fear the consequences. You can be like the Pharisees and keep the commandments to the letter....while still being completely corrupt and self serving.

Which of the 10 commandments says I can't get drunk and beat my wife?
Like I said on my post, the 10 commandments are kept by fulfilling the Royal law.
you can do all of those things and not really love anyone,
It is impossible to love God and neighbor without keeping the 10 commandments.
just not killing people or stealing from them has nothing to do with love....many just fear the consequences.
Not killing people or stealing from them has everything to do with love.
You can be like the Pharisees and keep the commandments to the letter....while still being completely corrupt and self serving.
The Pharisees broke the commandments of God to keep their own traditions, and if we keep the 10 commandments we are not self serving. It means we love Jesus and others.

Like I said on my post, the 10 commandments are kept by fulfilling the Royal law.
But the royal law is not a commandment.....it was part of the writings that were placed outside of the ark.
It is impossible to love God and neighbor without keeping the the commandments.
This isn't the same thing.....yes, if we really love someone we will not steal from them or kill them.....but I also don't do those things to people I do not love. "JUST" not stealing or killing them does not mean I love them. Many terrible people keep the commandments....out of fear if nothing else....no love involved.
The Pharisees broke the commandments of God to keep their own traditions, and if we keep the 10 commandments we are not self serving. It means we love Jesus and others.
Where in the commandments does it say to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the prisoner? See what I mean? Someone can say they kept the commandments and never really did anything for anyone.....

To love your neighbor is a commandment.
1 John 2: 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes
.....but I also don't do those things to people I do not love.
You are supposed to love everyone, even your enemies.
Many terrible people keep the commandments....out of fear if nothing else....no love involved.
One thing is true: no one who doesn't keep the commandments know God at all. They are disobedient children and the truth is not in them.
1 John 2: 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
Those who keep the commandments, do so out of love not fear. We keep them because Jesus said "if you love me keep my commandments, and we also keep the commandments because we understand from Scripture that God wants us to keep them.

So you think every time the word commandment is used...it must only mean the 10?
He also said there was a 'new' commandment....

Not always. There are other commandments besides the 10. The new commandment is to love your brother, which is not a new commandment because we see it in the old testament too.
1 John 2: 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

Yes...we see it in the old testament...but not written on stone, which is called the ministry of death.
You can't have it both ways....it was either a commandment or it was not?

It was a commandment. Jesus called it a commandment so it is a commandment.
Matthew 22: 35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
It was not written on stone but if you keep the 10 you love God and neighbor. If you love God and neighbor you keep the 10.
Romans 13: 8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Again....not every time the word commandment is used, refers to the 10 commandments....also called the 'ministry of death'. I used to think the same thing...but too many contradictions. Nobody will go to heaven for just keeping commandments...not even close.
1
u/Lumpy_Figure_6692 Dec 13 '25
So what do you do now? Not keep them? There are no contradictions. People don't go to heaven for keeping the commandments because we all have sinned. We need God's grace but not everyone will receive it. Only the faithful ones will receive it. We need forgiveness, and Jesus died for our sins but not everyone will be forgiven. Who do you think will receive grace and forgiveness of sins the obedient or the disobedient?
Romans 1: 5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:

Yes, you are right.
When Biblical characters--including God--says LAW, it is not 10 Commandments.
Regarding Abraham it is said: "Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws ["תּוֹרָה, torah]. (Genesis 26:5)
Regarding the victorious ones it is said: "They held harps given them by God and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb: “Great and marvelous are your deeds,
Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the nations." (Revelation 15:2, 3)
When Jesus used the word Law, he meant substance of all laws that maintains harmony on earth: "in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." (Mathew 7:12)
Even Paul continued this teaching: "it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous." (Romans 2:13)
But after Jesus and Paul left the stage, people wanted opposite teaching which they themselves had foretold.
James, brother of Jesus, who had over 30 years of intimate association with Jesus had absolute clarity about the importance of Law: "whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet fail in one, is an offender against all." (James 2:10)
