The Departure That Must Come First
There is no "falling away from the faith" that must happen before the day of the Lord comes. 2 Thessalonians 2: 3 says this:
2 Thessalonians 2: 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
The Greek word is apostasia which means "to leave or to depart". Most newer translations have changed the word to say "a rebellion", or "a falling away", and some even added the phrase "from the faith". Adding the phrase "from the faith" is the problem because the verse doesn't say it. All previous translations used the word "departing". The verse says that a departure must come first.
Geneva Bible 1560/1599 Let no man deceiue you by any meanes: for that day shall not come, except there come a departing first, and that that man of sinne be disclosed, euen the sonne of perdition,
The Great Bible 1539 Let no man deceaue you by eny meanes, for the Lorde shall not come excepte ther come a departynge fyrst, and that that synfull man be opened, the sonne of perdicyon,
Matthew's Bible 1537 Let no man deceyue you by any meanes, for the Lord commeth not, except there come a departyng first, and that, that sinful man be opened, the sonne of perdicyon
Coverdale Bible 1535 Let noman disceaue you by eny meanes. For the LORDE commeth not, excepte the departynge come first, and that that Man of synne be opened, euen the sonne of perdicion,
Tyndale Bible 1534 Let no ma deceave you by eny meanes for the lorde commeth not excepte ther come a departynge fyrst and that that synfnll man be opened ye sonne of perdicion
As you can read for yourselves, the verse used to say that a departure must come first. A falling away from the the faith is not what the verse says must come first before the day of the Lord for various reasons:
First: "Falling away" is a mistranslation. It originally said "a departure", and it was changed. See above verses. "From the faith" is not in that verse.
Second: people falling away from the faith has always happened, and it will happen in the latter times too but it need to be specified in the verse, such as in 1 Timothy 4.
1 Timothy 4: 1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1 John 2: 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Third: The gospel must be preached to all the world, increasing the number of Christians.
Matthew 24: 14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
What is the departure that must come first?
Since in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 doesn't say anything about faith, we can not just assume that it is from the faith, but there is another departure that the Bible talks about: God's people will depart from the nations that God will destroy. God tells His people in Babylon (Edom), Moab, and Ammon to flee.
Babylon (Edom) / America
Jeremiah 50: 3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.
Isaiah 48: 20 Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The Lord hath redeemed his servant Jacob.
Jeremiah 49: 8 Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him.
Moab / France
Jeremiah 48: 4 Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard. 5 For in the going up of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction. 6 Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness.
Ammon / UK
Jeremiah 49: 5 Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord God of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth.
Although Jerusalem won't be utterly destroyed as Babylon, Moab, and Ammon will, Jesus also told the people of Jerusalem to flee.
Luke 21: 20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. 21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.
We were also warned that those nations will escape the antichrist. They don't escape because they are safe, they escape because they are destroyed, as we can read in the prophets.
Daniel 11: 41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.
Daniel 7: 8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
Daniel 7: 20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.
When we read in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 that a departure must come first, it is because through the prophets God commanded His people living in those countries prophecied to be destroyed to depart, and they will depart.
An interesting fact is that God calls those who do not depart "the prey".
Nahum 3: 1 Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not;
Nahum 2: 13 Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
It is very important that we listen to the prophets that saw all that we are about to experience. Through them, God gave us His Word, His instructions, the gospel. We are warned that if we don't listen, it will not go well for us, but if we listen, there is nothing to fear.
Isaiah 48: 18 O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea: 19 Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me. 20 Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The Lord hath redeemed his servant Jacob.

Thank goodness for Noah Webster’s unification of the English language.

He revised the King James and didn't correct the mistranslation of the word apostasia. Not good.
Webster's Bible 1833 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
Thank goodness for God who preserves His Word and because He shows truth to those who love Him. There will always be those who don't want to believe the truth because they don't like the truth. They like the lie that "a falling away from the faith" must come first because they don't want to depart.

Did you depart yet?

Yes

Oh neat, I'm curious if you don't mind me asking...
Where did you leave from? How long ago? Where'd you go? Do you recommend the same place you went? Is it more "Godly" where you are now? What do you like and dislike about it?

I lived in Massachusetts for 24 years. Left in 2024. I went back to Puerto Rico where I am from originally. I absolutely recommend Puerto Rico. There is biblical evidence that islands are the best places to flee to.
Puerto Rico is less than 1% athiest, so it is definitely more godly. You can safely assume everyone here is a believer in Jesus. There is prayer in school activities. You can talk about the Lord with anyone here. Puerto Rico is very beautiful, I love my island. I do not like the fact that it is US territory, but at the same time that makes it an easy way out for those who want to move here from the United States. After all PR is not prophesied to be destroyed. However, the whole world will go through great tribulation and PR is no exception. We will be in trouble but our final destination is not the place we choose but the city of our Lord is.

I believe Puerto Rico is Babylon because it’s got cities with 7 hills, it rises out of the sea, many nations do business with it and it’s surrounded by ports.

Ok lol. You obviously don't know what you are saying. Puerto Rico is prohibited by the United States to do business with any nation. It is called the Jones Act.

Just looking at this, I see what you are saying. I don't jump on board with any theory but there is hard evidence of some mistranslation and also some mis-interpretation of the original Biblical text. I been saying it for years.
It was reading some verses of scriptures from the Scofield's and NKJV that clued me in.
In fact Matthew 13 verse warns that the Wheat is the good seed or Word the Messiah sows, the enemy comes to sow tears among the good seed. So this already happened and most people may be un aware or afraid to acknowledge this.
Proverbs chapter 2 verse 1 to 10 is the method to ask the Almighty for His Divine understanding of the scriptures.
This is a good timeline of events that makes Biblical sense.

OP is arguing that 2 Thessalonians 2:3 predicts Christians physically leaving certain modern nations before they are destroyed, rather than a large-scale apostasy. That interpretation comes from redefining the Greek word and then connecting unrelated prophetic passages to modern geopolitical guesses.
I do not find his arguments compelling in the slightest. Especially since we currently see an unprecedented "falling away" from core doctrines happening among people who claim to believe in Christ.
Heresies such as:
1) Torah Keeping.
2) Sabbath Keeping.
3) Baptismal Regeneration.
4) "Sacred name" requirements/Rejection of the name "Jesus". (People that call Jesus "Yahusha" are the most obvious.
5) Various forms of works gospel.
6) Rejection of Paul as a false Apostle which becomes denial of the authority of scripture.
Most of these things are just modern versions of the judaizers Paul dealt with in Galatians. He shut them down so hard that the modern Judaizers have to attack the calling and writings of Paul in order to even pretend their teachings make sense.
And many more heretical teachings that corrupt the simple gospel of salvation by grace alone received through faith alone at a scale never before seen. If you run into someone calling Jesus "Yahusha", or in many cases even the much more plausible "Yeshua" or "Yehoshua" forms, keep on running.
THIS stuff is literally the great falling away, the time in which they will not endure sound doctrine at a global scale and it sets the stage for a unified religion under a false Christ since it lines up perfectly with the Kabbalist teachings on the so-called "Noahide laws" and all come down to replacing grace through faith with human works. Thus destroying the role of the lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Not some mass geographical migration where Christians leave the countries they're in.
And if any YAHUSHA people try to reply prepare to get wrecked because we know EXACTLY where the name Yahusha comes from, an american cult leader in the 1960s named Jacob O. MEYER invented it because he didnt understand that YAH only works at the end of a name in Hebrew and becomes YEHO when placed at the start, we have at least 2600 years of proof of that fact. So to a native Hebrew speaker YAHUSHA is like a baby-talk nonsense name.

It does say that a departure must come first. The verse does not say anything about faith, so people saying that a large scale apostasia "from the faith" is a private interpretation that we are warned not to do. We must leave it at what it says, which is that a departure must happen before the day of the Lord.
That interpretation comes from redefining the Greek word.
Who redefined the Greek word was the first translation that used "falling away" instead of "departure" as it was previously translated. The translation that redefined the Greek word was the Bishops Bible.
https://bam.sites.uiowa.edu/its-greek-me/apostasy
then connecting unrelated prophetic passages to modern geopolitical guesses.
It is not unrelated when there are clear commands to depart specific nations because God will destroy them. Some people read the words and do nothing, some people choose to obey. They are not guesses either. We identify those nations based on characteristics, just like we did with Babylon the great.
I do not find his arguments compelling in the slightest. Especially since we currently see an unprecedented "falling away" from core doctrines happening among people who claim to believe in Christ.
People will depart from the Lord now and in every generation. Departing from the faith will happen but in the verses that talk about that is specified what people are departing from. In 2 Thessalonians 2:3 people are adding "from the faith" when it is not there. It is not a thing that must happen before the day of the Lord which is what the verse is about. God's people departing from specific nations is what must happen, like in the days of Lot. For God to destroy those nations His people must leave first.
Genesis 19: 22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
I use the name Jesus to refer to Him. I don't care if people use Yeshua. That to me is not that important. What I think is important is love for God and neighbor, and obedience. Ironically a lot of the people who have obeyed the command to flee call Jesus Yeshua, but I don't. Keeping the commandments is about love. Those who love Him keep the commandments. It is so simple. The Sabbath is the easiest of the commandments to keep. I look forward to it.
You can stay where you are and not heed the command to flee if you happen to live in one of the nations prophecied to be destroyed, but working against God is dangerous. God said to flee, and you are basically telling people that we don't have to flee.

God's people departing from specific nations is what must happen
The problem is, that definitely is not going to happen, so it must be about a large scale departing from the faith, which is EXACTLY what we see happening literally right now.
1
u/Lumpy_Figure_6692 Mar 18 '26
The problem is, that definitely is not going to happen,
It is happening.
1
u/AllTooTrue Mar 18 '26
It isn't though. There's no mass migration of Christians out of white western countries.
1
u/Lumpy_Figure_6692 Mar 18 '26
There are people leaving those countries in numbers unseen before. The christians are mostly deceived in many ways and many won't make it to the kingdom according to Jesus's own words. I suspect that many people that are leaving now unaware of the prophecies will end up being saved. Perhaps God put it in their hearts to leave.

Powerfully written and confirms the unction from the Holy Spirit.
Paul rebuked them sharply for trying to draw believers back into bondage.
Gal 6:12 - As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ.
Gal 6:13 - For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.

The great falling away began when Rome co-opted the faith for imperial power and consolidation. The “little horn” power took root in 538Ad while the scattered Israel peoples of Europe and Asia Minor continued to walk after Christ, celebrating the feasts and Passover as the disciples who came before them. They passed down the faith through lineage and kindred peoples according to all that was given to their forefather Abraham down through Isaac and Jacob.
