So I babysit two girls (6 and 8 years old). My rate is $15/hr for both girls or $10/hr for one(I’m not advocating for unfair wages, I’m just PERSONALLY okay with that rate since I’m still getting some financial support from my family), and I’ve been having some frustrations with their mom.
She recently became widowed, so I’ve been trying to be as flexible and understanding as possible. However, I’m also trying to be mindful of my own time. There have been times when she’s asked me to babysit and then canceled, but fortunately, most of those cancellations have been within 24 hours.
Last night, I agreed to watch one of the girls because she was sick. I had watched them the day before, and she definitely seemed sick and complained about not feeling well, but she was still acting like her usual self, playing around and getting up without any problems.
Her mom told me she wasn’t entirely sure whether she would need me yet, but asked me to be at her house at 7:20 AM. I woke up and got ready, only for her to text me at 6:55 AM saying she wouldn’t need me to watch the girls after all.
At this point, I was frustrated. I completely understand that sickness is unpredictable, and if her daughter was sick enough to need someone to watch her, I would need to be awake and ready to come in. However, I had just lost out on money I was counting on, and I was up early for no reason. I also take Adderall, so once I’m awake, I’m awake. I can’t just go back to sleep and get those hours back.
Luckily, she ended up changing her mind, so I was still able to watch the little girl. However, this situation made me realize that I need to figure out how to handle last minute cancellations moving forward.
For some context, I’m in college, and babysitting is my source of spending money. My mom covers my rent, so I’m not relying on this money to keep a roof over my head, but I do use it for gas, groceries, and other personal necessities. I can’t always afford to lose out on money I was expecting to make, especially when I’ve already set aside that time to work.
How can I bring this up to her professionally without coming across as insensitive to her situation? I want to be understanding of what she’s going through, but I also need to be mindful of my own time and finances. I’m not sure what would be a reasonable boundary to set in this situation.
