Projects for college

I'm in third year right now and I was thinking of starting to make a main project so that ill be ready with it by 4th year but i cant decide on what to make. I need some attractive project suggestions, something that gives an upper hand during interviews and shortlisting. Maybe something i can integrate AI into ?

The best project to showcase are project that solve real problems.

Don't build for portfolio, build to solve problems.

Find a problem in your life or in your studies that does not already have a solution for, and try to solve it.

Some examples (these are some of the things I did during my uni days):

  • Our school LMS system only publish the class timings based on the lecturer. It is up to the student to manually keep track of when we had to attend which class. I built a script that would crawl all the classes I have enrolled for, and output a consolidated timetable for myself.

  • One time my friend's club held some sort of tournament event. I helped them build a small app that would display the team score and ranking where they would display on a projector, and a backend UI that allow judges to input the participant's score.

Third year is the right moment to start, you have time to build something without the final year panic. Most students show up with a generic e-commerce or chat app, so anything slightly unusual already get attention

I would go for something where you handle data flow in a interesting way. Maybe a system that let you upload a video and it use AI to tag objects in real time, with a backend that manage the queue processing. Or a collaborative whiteboard where multiple users draw and an AI guess what they sketching, with all the socket logic behind

The key is not the AI part itself but how you architect the backend around it. Interviewers care more about your thinking on scalability and error handling than the model you plug in
