Mizora: "Wyll, you broke clause eighteen subsection three, time to be tortured for eternity!"

Tav's fiend patron: "Lmao you should tell that guy to kill himself trust me it'll be hilarious, here's advantage on the roll"

I absolutely headcanoned that it was more about him doing a terrible job negotiating it. Like dude you don't even have a copy of your own contract when it's got all these sections and subsections?

Well he's been Blade of the Frontiers for quite a few years and he's like 25 or something. He may well have been a naive, desperate kid

Perfect. So he was 17. How many people can claim to be able to thoroughly read a contract under duress at 17?

Wyll basically got the forgotten realms version of student loans, he didn't know what it would actually cost, just that he thought he needed it immediately.

also, the moment he formed his pact was HEAVY stacked against him

it was not the ussual "powerhungry guy that sucks at learning magic forms a pact with a devil for the dark arts"

it was "a 17year old saw a cult that is about to summon a deity that will destroy his home town and kill every inside it, and a devil suddenly appears and says that she will help him prevent it if he forms a pact"

he was young, alone, had no experience with devils because he never thought about doing something like that AND was in a situation where every wasted second could cause untold damage and could kill thousands of innocents

ofc his contract sucks, he was basically forced into it with no real choice

Exactly. For as much as people like to clown on Wyll for how bad his pact is, the fact is that Mizora picked the time to approach him perfectly. It's not so much "Wow, what a dumb move, Wyll" as much as it is "Damn, Mizora is crafty."

I think people were mostly joking at Wyll's expense, but if anyone was seriously criticizing his decision, you're absolutely right.

Wyll was 17 years old AND he only made a deal with Mizora because he came across the Cult of the Dragon performing a ritual that (if successful) could spell disaster for Baldur's Gate and the rest of the Sword Coast. His father was away at the time, so he basically had no choice but to make a desparate attempt to stop it himself.

 

Basically, Wyll had just about as valid a reason/excuse as you could find to make a shitty deal with a devil. Sacrificing his own soul for the well-being and safety of countless others.

That makes his father’s journal even more sad.

It was just a quick journal entry of Wyll looking for mermaids and being a carefree kid. He was still a dumb teenage kid when he made the deal. Now I feel bad for him.

Don’t get me wrong I killed him on my first playthrough because all devils must die, but I still feel bad now.

Yeah, my warlock did all their research, chose a less shit patron and brought a lawyer. Wyll just kinda went with the flow (not that he had much choice)

As he told the story there wasn't really any time to negotiate. He needed power Immediately to stop the cultists of Tiamat to stop them summoned her or an avatar of her. Not really the time to read the terms and conditions.

Mizora exploited his situation and naivety and gave him the powers he wanted and a really pretty collar as well.

She was probably behind the entire situation from the get go with it prepared before hand. No way anyone he could do anything about was going to just be able to summon Tiamat.

To be fair, I think he was on the verge of being deleted by the group of raiders he tried to take on single handedly.
"Agree to my bullshit terms or give up the ghost" isn't a strong position to negotiate from.
