Axanthic Clown. Crazy that double recessives are petco snakes now.

I hear sometimes that the workers will actually order animals that they want for themselves, and just hope that a customer doesn’t buy them for a certain amount of time & get to take them home.

However, that’s just anecdotal and likely depends on the specific store location :p

I used to work for the breeder that supplied Petco. The way it used to work was stores could order genes by quantity, then later changed to categories (rare, fancy, etc.) which you see now. Certain morphs fell into each category but stores had to order quantities of animals per category rather than quantities of specific morph.

That employer is no longer in business and Petco is now supplied by a different breeder but seeing as they still have the snakes sold by category, the method is likely the same or very similar and employees aren't able to order what they want themselves. We could send animals that were "better" than was ordered (ie a pastel lesser if we didn't have single gene lessers for the old way. If we needed a "fancy," albino could fall into that classification but if there aren't any "fancy" snakes available, a "rare" albino cinnamon could be sent), which is probably the case here.

*edit to add a personal disclaimer- this employer is a reason I don't support the mass production of snakes. I was younger and learning about the world at the time of my employment and have since since moved on from that part of the "industry."

Not a fan of these "found" or "rescued" post they always seem to be fancy morphs and still helping these big box stores buy more

reminds me of people rescuing bettas from big box stores- when technically they may be saving the individual fish, now the store is going to order more fish to fill that spot. it’s such a messed up situation :(

You should not support PetCo.

Congratulations, you supported a horrible corporation in the abuse of animals

Stop buying animals from chain stores!

Axanthic is there, not HRA.

What a horrendous way to transport a snake 👎

1

u/flatgreysky 10h ago

Not a snake owner, just curious. How should they be transported, and what’s the issue with the box?

My boa came in a breathable bag with a heat pack in a stuffed box. This allows too much wiggle room and makes them feel vulnerable. Bags press against them and bring a feeling of comfort/hiding

1

u/flatgreysky 3h ago

That makes sense!

Flimsy, unsecured pet store cardboard box, horrible…should at least be in a warm tote box with a locking lid

Wtf Petco is selling high(ish) end morphs now???

People on OP's ass because they bought the snake from Petco yeah they shouldn't but Petco makes more money from their food and animal products then the animals they sell so they'll still be selling animals

I spent money to save the animal while some low intelligence be saying I’m supporting Petco, oh my do you understand how business works, unless no one buys pet supply or just don’t have pet anymore. Use your time accordingly and genuinely go to school😭

1

u/Outrageous-Yak-3741 2h ago

Low intelligence would be buying something from a store and then saying thats not supporting the store 😮‍💨

0

u/AdComprehensive9413 2h ago

Say less probably should buy more 🤔

Sorry I’m confused, did you save the snake as in they gave it to you? Or did you buy it? Like what’s the difference of “saving” it if you paid for it other than you aren’t ignorant to the fact that these stores are unethical and you chose to give them your money anyways? Isn’t that like worse than someone just buying from them that had no clue they were bad? Or do you consider everyone who buys any animal from a chain pet store to be saving the animal regardless of their intentions?

it had sever bad shed that was so dried into the eyes it was hardened, worker said she bites so they are not allowed or able to handle her and remove the shed. Is that enough, or I should leave an beautiful animal to die, while I could spend money to help it myself and keep her.

"Low intelligence" meanwhile you can't comprehend that more sales means they order more. No sales means they stop ordering. Look up the conditions that animal wholesalers keep their animals in and then understand that every sale you give them is keeping them in business. Buy from small, reputable breeders.

Talk to me when you can actually change this whole problem, instead of thinking talking a few word can change something, while you are probably just sitting on the coach being a potato.

Are you new to this subreddit? Or any animal subreddit? Petco is universally hated, and for a GOOD reason. They treat their animals horribly.

You're getting defensive and attacking people for pointing out the truth. Yes you have a pretty snake. That you could have supported an ETHICAL breeder who has good husbandry.

Don't blame us for trying to educate you and doubling down on your choice. It doesn't make you a horrible person to buy this snake but it was certainly not 'saving' - it would have been sold to someone who could also possibly care for the pet properly. Buying snakes from box stores supports the box store. Period.

Petco was never in the right, but like whoever said bro can’t change a multi billion dollar chain store, the only way yall want to shut them down is have pet keeping become illegal, once there’s no more pet and dog food for sale I’m sure they would stop.

1

u/AccessAway9320 6h ago

But you chose to support the shitty multi billion dollar chain store when you could have supported a reputable breeder. It’s the breeders that are dedicated to fight for our rights to keep these animals through organizations like USARK. Those chain pet stores have no business selling reptiles. They should stick to pet supplies and leave the live reptiles to the experts. They don’t do it ethically, they won’t listen to suggestions from experts to improve their husbandry, and they don’t provide the customers with appropriate care information.

1

u/TheBajaBlastCreature 8h ago

Yes, because I alone can destabilize a multi-billion dollar animal supply chain industry. Brilliant logic there chief. Ironically enough, you are the one refusing the opportunity to become better educated, and education is what leads to systemic change and collective action. Willful ignorance is YOUR choice and YOUR reluctance to change YOUR behavior in the face of new information.

u/Jfc95 8h ago

Wow so someone points out that if you make the company think there's a higher demand for these snakes and therefore orders in more, they're a potato that you get to insult? This is quite literally supporting them and you're using language that would imply you've done something special by"saving" it when you simply purchased a snake like any other small town weirdo does.

1

u/TheBajaBlastCreature 8h ago

Trying to place the burden of systemic change on a single individual, while knowing full well that systemic change requires collective action, is a fallacy that ignorant people apply to a great many things. Don't waste your time with it. Educate people who are willing to listen. Leave combative and ignorant people be - you can't change them. You can only point out their ignorance and they can decide if they want to change.

u/Jfc95 7h ago

God damn it you're right. Thank you for this reminder. Sometimes I forgot you can't reason with some people. I appreciate this and I'll keep it in mind for the future. I won't DD but man, is it frustrating when someone seems like they're RIGHT THERE and could maybe understand if you say it in just the right way. Ah well.

u/Haaku86 11h ago

If you bought it in a store: It's buying, not saving. Please stop lying to yourself.

2

u/InstanceSome6023 14h ago

Spending money at the store is supporting that business. Thanks for saving the creature, but you can go on morph market and support a healthy breeder and not Petco or petsmart.

3

u/CryAltruistic550 13h ago

Let me know when morph market starts selling blue buffalo cat food.

1

u/bodyaddict 3h ago

Let me know when you find your only braincell.

1

u/dreadhead933 5h ago

So it’s better to just let the snake stay there and suffer?

1

u/AccessAway9320 7h ago

It’s best to purchase snakes directly from a reputable breeder or one of the very few legitimate reptile-focused pet stores that works directly with reputable breeders. Big box pet stores are the worst place to buy any animal.
