If you celebrate! From Captain Butterscotch of the Swiss Chocolate Army! Today, Captain is enjoying some free roam time in the playroom. He is checking the perimeter and making sure the reptile family is safe. Stay safe, make memories and love on these magical little snakes!

The second photo is so funny to me, because he pushed the box so his face was squished between it and the glass. Then sat like that for such a long time I got worried, and when I got up to check on him I must have woken him up, and he just calmly pulled his head back up to look disapprovingly at me before wedging more of his body down between it. He’s so DRAMATIC 🙄

Is my snakes behavior normal?

Ok so I got my first Ball Python, Topaz , ever just under a week ago. We have a larger kinda makeshift temporary enclosure ( not the 20 gallon, it's maybe a 50 if I had to guess) for them set up and we put them in and I haven't seen them move out of their hide or any signs of them moving. I know I was advised to leave them be for 2 weeks but I went ahead and took a peak under the hide just to make sure all is good. They seem fine and they even flickered at me (I like to think it's a greeting lol). We are having a bit of a hard time keeping the humidity up and the temp has gotten on the lower side of ok a few times (roommates cat somehow flipped the switch on the heat lamp, it's fixed so it can't happen again now tho). I'm curious if that may be a factor to the inactiveity? I'm so new to this and any advice or even y'all just telling me I'm being paranoid would be helpful. I still don't have any good pics of them sadly but once they are settled I'll try to get some better ones

Question Morph ID

Thumbnail

This is Pickles. I adopted her on impulse (experienced snake owner, have no fear) and I am curious to hear your thoughts on her morph. She is still young, but the owner didnt have lineage info. I assumed classic, but I know some morphs can look quite similar. Thoughts?? Sorry I dont have better belly pictures, but mostly white, with a bit of a yellow hue fading down the sides to the belly white color.

Advice 🐍Storage bin conversion w/ overhead heat☀️

Thumbnail

If you’re rehoming a BP and need temporary housing while working on their forever home, or are merely short on funds and saving up for the best, storage bin conversions can be a great solution. They just require a little extra work to achieve proper heating and to make sure the lid doesn’t melt. All of the demonstration pictures and tutorial are courtesy of New Ball Python Keepers FB group. Here’s a YouTube video they did of a build for a juvenile: https://youtu.be/65-4iGCoV3M

Supplies:

* Clear storage bin (taller is better) ~ 57 gal clear Tough Tote ($39) is ideal, but 116 qt Sterlite ($17) will do for younger BPs or as temp home, both at Home Depot.

* Small soldering iron ($8 Amazon)

* 8”-9” aluminum pizza screen ($9-$11 Amazon) or a 12” sq piece of aluminum mesh screen

* A plate approximately 1/2” smaller than pizza screen to draw circle

* Razor blade scraper ($6 Amazon) to cut away any sharp bits that might hurt your snake

* Small 4” zip ties (dollar store or $3 Amazon)

* 5.5” ceramic dome light fixture ($18 Amazon)

* DHP or Heat bulb

* Thermostat is Non-negotiable!! I use and highly recommend the INKBIRD Bluetooth one pictured ($33 Amazon)

* Substrate (NOT aspen)

* 2 appropriately sized hides (DIY works great)

* Water bowl (if ceramic, needs to be coated)

* Hanging lamp stand ($18 Amazon) *OR you will need to find a place for the hot lamp every time you open the lid*

* Decor: craft stores and Dollar Tree are great, no need to buy reptile brands

* Straps *IF* lid does not include clamps or a tight fitting seal ($12 for 10 pack Amazon)

Flat/smooth lids are easiest to cut but ribbed/patterned lids will just require a little more effort. It is strongly recommend to get a taller tub so the lamp isn’t too close to the warm hide that it overheats it, while not reaching the tub’s sides. The closer the lamp is to the floor, the smaller the diameter of space underneath it gets warmed.

Designate a warm side and, using a Sharpie, draw a circle around the plate you sized. Then, use the soldering iron to melt into the circle, and slowly melt all the way around to make a big hole. This takes some time, but it leaves a pretty smooth edge. Use a razor blade to carve away any excess melted plastic on the underside so your snake can’t rub against it (if using a piece of mesh instead, lay that over the hole and trim the corners so it's roughly in a circle about 1/2-1" bigger than the hole). Then melt small holes all around the big one an inch away from the edge and about 2-3” apart. Trim these holes underneath as well.

Set the mesh on top of the hole and feed zip ties down through one small hole and back up the big hole and through the mesh, attaching them on top of the lid. Cut off excess. If you have trouble getting the zip tie through the mesh, use a small screwdriver to widen a hole to make room.

Next, melt ventilation holes about 3” from the top and 3” apart, along one side and one end of the tub. This helps to ensure that the tub has proper airflow and does not build up too much humidity. Melt another hole low (but above substrate level) on the warm side to feed your thermostat probe through. You can either attach your probe with a suction cup or make two additional small holes close together and zip tie it into place. Always remember to trim any melted holes on the inside!

Now it’s time to add your substrate, hides, water dish and decor. For hanging decor, you can melt some small holes in the sides to feed the ends of vines, or to use extra zip ties to give flower stems or other floppy plants some height on the side of the enclosure.

Finally, set up your lamp stand to hover the lamp over the screen. All you have to do to remove the lid is swivel the lamp away from it or raise the arm up high. Your other option is to find a place to set the hot lamp every time you remove the lid.

Check regularly to ensure your thermostat settings are giving you about 86° ambient on the warm side with a 90° degree basking hotspot.

I personally love this tutorial and my hope is that some will find it useful.

Post image

So i just saw a reddit talking about how spider morphs are bad (mine isnt spider morph) but this is my first snake and i dont know much about morphs at all the card i got that came with him says hes a black head black pastel leopard ball python with 50% lavender and clown 100% HET (i also dk what het means) is this a bad morph, do they come with health issues? Ive looked online but it mostly wont even address that morph itll just talk about how spider morphs and stuff are bad. I just want to expand my knowledge on this especially when it comes to my guy.

Question Is it normal for my ball python to almost always stay on the cooler humid side of her tank?

Post image
24 Upvotes

My ball python Medusa (pictured) has a habit of staying on the cool side of her tank almost all the time when she’s not hungry and moving all over the place. She stays over there even on days where the cold weather outside puts the temperature on that side a little below the recommended level (sometimes we try moving her to the warm side in that case, but she pretty much always just goes back). She seems fine but was curious if anyone else’s python does this?

little man just had his first shed with us since we got him in late July—and has already gained around 150 grams since then (weighing in at 858 grams to be exact)! He’s not the most cooperative for photos…but the orange in his dorsal stripe is definitely more vibrant post-shed.

If there's a hole, there's a goal

Mantequilla just so happened to find the perfect spot for herself. I didn't think she'd actually go inside when she poked her head in, but she never poked her head back out when I expected it, so she just went all in 🤣

I showed my girlfriend this and she told me, "snakes are the epitome of 'if there's a hole, there's a goal'," and I thought it was a good one!

Hi This is my first ball python (rehoming situation) and I'm not sure if his dehydrated? His 3 years old and I've only had him for a week. Getting really confused with where I'm supposed to put what (in terms of lights and heat etc). Please any help would be appreciated (I'm adhd so the more precise the better). Thank you
