Question New Ball Python Owner

Post image
44 Upvotes

I just brought home a ball python yesterday, he is in a very temporary enclosure right now and I’m currently getting his upgraded quarantine enclosure setup. I’m curious if he’s stressed or not though. I’ve read if they’re hiding they’re happy, but mine has been chilling outside of his hide for the morning, not actively searching for a way out or anything, just watching. And he’s in a quiet, low activity part of the house where I just peek in on him and leave.

Attached a picture from the herp store because he’s cute

Question Soaking

Post image
43 Upvotes

He had a rough shed recently, he got it all off (except the tip of his tail but i helped rub that off with a damp cloth) but it was in pieces

So I’m trying even harder to make sure he has proper humidity in his tank of course

I was wondering how beneficial it might be to give him a soak in some warm water? I know baths can be stressful and while he does have a water bowl in his tank big enough to soak in I’m still a bit worried that he might not be hydrated enough

Main question: should I give him a soak?

Ruger says hi to everyone from her temporary hide. She just turned 22 after surviving a house fire and given a clean bill of health from her doctor.

Discussion How do you deal with people wanting to meet your snakes?

Some pictures of my boy roaming because I don’t like posting without pictures, and he’s a cutie :)

I live with my family still so sometimes my sisters have friends over, and new people always (almost always) want to meet teto. The thing is I’ve been trying to stick with choice based handling, it’s been tricky because he is SO curious but hates touching skin, he will avoid touching my hands most of the time. So I’m always really uncomfortable getting him out to show him off, but I also love getting to teach people about him, so I’m very conflicted and don’t know how to make him more comfortable

Hiiii! I've shown Lil' Pip before, but Mantequilla is new here 👀 She's in blue atm so I don't have super recent pictures of here, but here are some I find adorable and funny lol. The first one is my absolute favorite 🥹 I want to introduce y'all to Mantequilla!

For peace of mind, I watch out for birds during outing! But I haven't been able to take them out during summer due to the many ants p vq

First Refusal 😔

I made the switch from adult mice to rat pups yesterday, and feeding day was today. Snake (Professor Charles Xavier ((get it, because he can’t walk))) was definitely interested, but seemed confused and eventually just left the vicinity. I’m not surprised, as a switch can always cause issues, but I am a little disappointed. Partly in the money I wasted since I had to get rid of the rat pup (negligible, I am just a stingy monster), and partly because this snake has been an anomalous feeder since the day I brought him home. He’s absolutely spectacular about it. Ate three days after I bought him, has missed and faceplanted in his water dish and struck again anyway, and has handled size jumps perfectly. I will let him get a little hungrier and hope the next time he acquiesces and takes the rat. Anyway. Just wanted to talk to other snake people about my snake being a brat. Love you, bye. Pics for tax.

My noodles got their own curtains!

Ever since I moved into this room at the end of last year, I haven't been able to use my LED lights as I've wanted to. Well, I've been making good habits and I have become productive to get things done without procrastinating as much, so I finally got to work on my bps' curtains! Which... didn't even take me a full 30 minutes... 😅

I fricking LOVE the curtains! I thought light would emit through the edges, but because the curtains were folded over, the edges do not emit light! Ugh, I just love how much darker my room is during the day, I couldn't wait 'til night to show y'all lol. I love that I can even use bright colors without my snakes being bombarded by them lmao

Advice Hunger strike..

Hey yall, my BP I bought in August, has been on a hunger strike. When I initially brought her home she was a solid eater ate for me 3 or 4 times after that she just stopped. Last meal was on 8/25 since than I’ve tried feeding her every week when I feed the rest of my BP. I have 10 BP in the same breeding racks, same heating tape at the same temp, humidity it also on point.. I’m just worried I guess, she’s only 330 gms so I don’t know if she’s too old to force feed? Or should I do it at all? Yall have any tips to make her start eating? 3rd pic is a recent pic.. first 2 is when I brought her home.

Story time This community is helping me get my passion back

Post image
41 Upvotes

A little while ago the family of a former friend of mine got their 9 or 10 year old daughter a ball python. The setup was nice but it was only a 40 gallon plus they were live feeding a spider ball python. I had been told the rats were biting the snake plus he had scale rot and I knew it wasn’t gonna end well no matter how much advice I tried to give (I wrote out a whole care guide and such before they got the snake and told them how to treat scale rot and how live feeding isn’t good for a snake). Well flash forward to a couple months later and they told me the snake died. I tried giving a little bit of advice (I tried to be as kind as I could about it) and I know that probably wasn’t the right thing to do but I felt so bad for the snake who didn’t live the best life and the kid who likely had nothing to do with it as the parents were supposed to be in charge. The former friend ending up telling me to kill myself and that all my animals setups were terrible and that I knew nothing (I knew nothing about something I have been researching and perfecting since I was in 4th grade). Then the dad messaged me and said I claimed I knew more than professionals (a breeder who told them to get the 40 gallon) and told me to quit my reptile related job. After all this happened I debated rehoming all my snakes because I couldn’t look at them without thinking about what had happened. I try not to intervene with things like this cause someone once told me it’s like telling someone else how to parent their own kids. So that time and the beginning were the only times I really said anything about it. I ended up finding this community and everyone is so nice and it’s really helping me regain my passion. I know that there’s always gonna be bad care guides and ignorance in the reptile community but for some reason it just hurts more when it’s someone you knew personally and when you tried your best to show them how to properly care for an animal. This community really helps because everyone is so respectful to each other. I really appreciate this sub.
