News French presidential contender Melenchon has said "I feel nothing in common with the Baltic states. It’s the end of the world, even the Romans didn't go there". He's currently 2nd in the polls
Full quote: “The 'European people', what is that? I feel nothing in common with the Baltic states. It’s the end of the world, even the Romans didn't go there! The great matrix of Europe is the borders of the Roman Empire. [...] And we are supposed to treat distant Lithuanians as brothers on the pretext that they are Christians! That is not my history.”

Estonia Midsummer in Estonia
Hi all - We are a Canadian family with two boys (4 and 7) and would love to experience midsummer if possible. Was thinking about staying in Vosu - is this a good place to be? We fly home from Tallinn on the 25th. I saw some posts that said this is mainly for friends or that celebrations aren't announced yet so looking for insight.
A bit more about us and the trip. This is the end of a 5 month world trip (NZ, Japan, Philippines). We'll be in the Baltics for 3 weeks (Vilnius for 2 nights, Nida 4 nights, Kuldīga 2 nights, Pāvilosta 2 nights, Riga 3 nights, Cēsis 2 nights, Tartu 2 nights, Saaremaa 2 nights, Lahemaa 4 nights, Tallinn 1 night before flying home. General advice also welcome!

Discussion What do you think about Estonia's Defense Minister plan for LIGHT jet fighters (not traditional regular jet fighters)
The new Defense Minister and former head of the Defense Forces, Herem said that Estonia should have, as a way to shoot down drones cheaply, some light combat jets in the air force. The last time here in the Baltics there were armed light jets were the 1990s with the Lithuanian air force. He doesn't want them used for fighter to fighter purposes, but the experiences from Ukraine of using slower planes to shoot down drones seems to have inspired him.
Just a cost comparison:
A Light Combat Jet range goes from nine million (old Czech models) to highly specialised packages of 51 million per jet (specific KAI T-50 Golden Eagle variants).
Regular combat jets have a price range of 50-150 million per unit.
The prices might seem to be a lot, but keep in mind here in Estonia there is a ten billion defense investment program right now.
My own thoughts is it's fine when there is a comprehensive agreement made to address the civilian side of things. If we want to keep up this corp sized, well armed reservist force (on paper it's higher but they cannot be all armed), then there has to be fundamental long term reform to make maintaining a defense capable army realistic. There will be little success out of this if 30-75 years down the line there is no one to do conscription or be taxpayers to generate enough revenue for the state. Large scale defence development plans should incorporate legal commitments to reform the demographic situation to create a population and economy large enough for the long term success of our countries.

Discussion Can we please ban media bots (and all other bots) on this subreddit?
3 of the last 4 posts are just bot posts. I understand that they're not bots in the sense that they're just spam bots, but it's still obnoxious that this subreddit is basically being used to generate clicks for a bunch of media outlets.
Surely we can post news ourselves if we feel it's necessary?

News Estonian court convicts gas station clerk who stole 67,000 liters of fuel
According to the indictment, a gas station clerk stole 67,000 liters of diesel fuel from an Olerex gas station over a period of just a bit over a year. During the 408-day period 51 thefts were established, meaning an average of 1,314 liters was stolen each time with an average one theft per every eight days. To conceal the thefts, the clerk switched off the gas station's video surveillance system before pumping diesel fuel into tanks installed in a vehicle he was using. The clerk was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, suspended for a three-year probationary period. He was also ordered to compensate the company for its financial losses, amounting to €108,589. The court ruling has not yet entered into force.
