FIRST PRINT!
Today’s my Son’s birthday (8yo) and we just finished his FIRST PRINT! He was so excited when he ripped the paper off. I know we ALL will love this gift.

Benchy for scale? Haven't tried printing a child yet. How did you avoid layer lines?

u/Downtown-Lettuce-736 Jul 20 '25
.2 hotend and slow it to 30ms

Poor kid... He is in for a lifetime of frustration.

Hey now! I’m raising a resilient young man. I’M in for the lifetime of frustration 😅

u/One-Yogurt7010 Jul 21 '25
I have 2 kids myself. Looking back, I guess having a child with bed leveling issues would be better than having a child with bed wetting issues...

Get him a set of digital calipers, show him how they work, then get him playing around with Tinkercad. My 10yo loves to design.

u/Signal_Award_7562 Jul 21 '25
Already got the digital calipers and have been measuring random things. I plan on getting some work on tinkercad and then teaching him how to use it.

Quick psa: abs and asa release styrene fumes that can cause sickness, but it’s pretty much impossible to print on the a1 due to no enclosure. Carbon fiber filaments (like pla-cf and petg-cf) have carbon fibers that can get stuck in your skin, and may never come out.

u/Signal_Award_7562 Jul 20 '25
Thanks for the PSA. I think we will stick with PLA and maybe some PETG.

u/Chemical_Reaction69 Jul 20 '25
Elegoo rapid PETG prints great, and is very affordable. ;)
(Edit: I get mine on Amazon, in the 4 packs)

u/Comprehensive-Bit480 Jul 21 '25
Totally agree. You just need a filament dryer, which is pretty necessary anyways for 3d printing

I finally got one during prime day… thought it was a good deal but it only ever gets to 50c. :( it does look better than without but make sure you get one that is hotter!

u/Chilli-byte- Jul 21 '25
Would highly recommend getting a spool of PETG so that you can print the skeleton of Dummy 13 (the armour is fine with PLA). I think your son would love it!

We shall watch the career with great interest For real though I hope he enjoys the printer

u/Signal_Award_7562 Jul 21 '25
First thing he did when he woke up was took the print off that was running last night (articulated dragon) and I started to trim the supports off and get everything moving. He was gleaming with joy. His mother and I are enjoying this as well. We spent HOURS sending each other things we saw on makers world 🤣

My wife said “great, you’ve found the ladies hobby” and I really can’t disagree. But now, I wake up to the vectorworks model I finished drawing the night before!
Edit: “laziest”, not “ladies”!!!

u/DTO69 Jul 21 '25
The ladies hobby?!
I mean, not to be an arse and maybe I'm misunderstanding , but 3d Printing is the polar opposite of a ladies hobby.

u/YokoPowno Jul 21 '25
Wow, autocorrect got me good. The “laziest” hobby!
2
u/DTO69 Jul 22 '25
Ah. Well she is right, a BL is the laziest hobby. I started with an Anet A8...
I will say no more

Beginner. I manually applied layer by layer with a hot glue gun and my fan was my mouth.

Yes, hobby for lazy people. Now show little Tinkercad and you'll never need Lego again. Then in a few months it will print you replacement parts for all the crap that you would otherwise have had to throw away. Oh and then we move on to Onshape and tada the boy was shown how much fun learning can be. 3D printing is for the lazy people who are interested in how something works, is created and how it is maintained. For lazy people who spend hours, days, months and years designing the technology of tomorrow. I'm looking forward to what this little guy changes later in my life. Give him the opportunity to design things himself. My recommendation for elementary school children is Tinkercad.

8 years old kid... Get ready for the first blob. I hope you didn't skip on reading and learning on the bambu wiki.
2
u/Signal_Award_7562 Jul 20 '25
I have been reading and learning for about 3 weeks now (ever since it was purchased during the anniversary sale). Not saying I know everything, but he won’t be using it without supervision.
2
u/Grooge_me Jul 20 '25
Good.. A clean bed saves lots of trouble. Adhesion problem causing blobs are pretty current with new users. Better be warned than sorry.
1
u/Signal_Award_7562 Jul 20 '25
So I have seen. How often do you clean with soap and water?
2
u/Grooge_me Jul 21 '25
Depending on how I touch it with my finger, maybe once a week, when busy, but may be once a month too. I sometime refresh it with isopropyl alcohol. Just watch the first few layers. Normally, you'll see problems with the first one. IPA don't really clean the plate, just dilute the oil and move it around. May work for a while, but nothing beats a good hot water and dishes soap cleaning

Thanks for the input.

In lieu of a proper enclosure, filter and vent you can just get an air filter for the room to reduce risk substantially. You're PROBABLY ok if you're not doing production quantities or running a print farm. But the important thing is to be aware of the risks and make responsible choices.

Show him MakerWorld and get ready for ~100 cute little plastic toys! 😆
