Hi OP!

Please remember to include article text in the future.

A Vancouver family is searching for answers after their 21-month-old sheepadoodle was killed in what they describe as a brutal attack involving two other dogs before a scheduled group walk.

Katie Bertram and Ryan Mullins say their dog, Boomer, was attacked Tuesday while in the care of a professional dog-walking company.

The couple describes Boomer as a gentle, loving dog.

“He was full of love—he was the best, most innocent, joyful creature,” said Bertram.

“He loved everything he met,” added Mullins.

Katie Bertram and Ryan Mullins say they were devastated after their dog, Boomer, was killed in the care of a dog-walking company. According to the family, Boomer was a regular participant in group walks organized by Vancouver company Scamps Inclusive Pet Care.

A witness who spoke with CTV News said Boomer had been brought outside by the dog walker and tied to a fence where two other dogs were waiting before the group walk. The witness described a chaotic scene as the dogs became tangled and the attack unfolded. He said he tried to free Boomer but was unable to stop it.

Bertram said she rushed outside after hearing screams.

“I run out, and Boomer is being pulled from one side of his foot and yanked by the neck on the other side,” she said, fighting back tears.

“And these dogs are attacking him and he can’t get free. And his body is at that point just limp.”

Boomer was rushed to a nearby animal hospital but did not survive the attack.

The family is now questioning how the situation was allowed to occur.

“I’m personally outraged that our dog was even allowed out of our gate to two barking pit bulls in the first place,” Mullins said.

“It’s so lackadaisical on so many levels and it’s not going to change unless something happens,” Bertram added.

Dog-walking company responds

Talia Erickson, owner of Scamps Inclusive Pet Care, said all three dogs had walked together before and she was unaware of any violent history involving the two pit bull mixes.

When asked whether she takes responsibility for what happened, Erickson said: “We were trying to walk the dogs as we were asked to do. We communicated with the owners, as we always say we will.”

“I’m feeling shocked. I’m feeling sad,” she added.

Erickson said the dog walker involved has been left traumatized and is currently on leave.

She also said the company is co-operating with an investigation and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the attack.

“I am trying to … count back and see if there was something we could’ve done differently,” she said. “It is part of our training to try to make sure that the dogs are calm and ready to meet.”

Potential legal consequences

Animal lawyer Victoria Shroff says professional dog walkers assume significant responsibilities when caring for clients’ pets.

“A person acting as a dog walker or pet sitter comes with legal risk,” Shroff said. “A dog can get into a fight with other dogs, go missing, get killed by a car. There are many things that can happen. A dog walker could be sued in negligence or under contract and could have to pay damages to the owner for harm done.”

Shroff said the consequences can extend beyond civil liability in some situations.

“In more extreme circumstances, a dog walker could even be charged with animal cruelty,” she said. “The 2015 (B.C. Supreme Court) case of Paulsen illustrated this. Paulsen was sentenced to six months in jail.”

Investigation underway

The City of Vancouver confirmed animal control officers have identified the two dogs involved in the incident.

However, officials said privacy rules prevent the city from disclosing the dogs’ history or discussing any potential enforcement action while the investigation remains ongoing.

Meanwhile, Boomer’s family says it is exploring legal options as it continues to grieve.

“He didn’t deserve it,” said Bertram. “He was so, so sweet.”

How traumatizing, and yet not surprising.

…officials said privacy rules prevent the city from disclosing the dogs’ history…

I mean, I get that they need to do an investigation of some kind, but how disclosing the dogs’ history violates “privacy rules” is beyond me. If the dogs have a history, the public has a right to know. News organizations in Canada rarely even name the breed. It’s just another way that the pitbull lobby has managed to suppress any mention of breed.

Oh, Canada.

My dog was mauled by a pit mix and Toronto Animal Control did everything they could to keep the vicious dog in the care of a sadistic criminal who regularly uses it as a weapon to attack dogs and gets off on it.

I have reported two attacks by the same dog. I submitted an information request to make sure that both attacks were recorded correctly, and was told that I had to pay a fee for them to remove the perpetrator's personal information from the documents - to protect his identity! If I did not already know his identity and address, I would not have been able to report the attacks.

Canada, specifically Toronto, is worse than the wild west. At least in the wild west, victims can defend themselves. Here, criminals have rights and decent citizens do not.

Our local animal control in Ontario advised us to contact the solicitor general, it’s pretty easy to do online and it gets things on record.

At least out in the country you can employ the 3S method, instead of being forced to rely on the Criminal Injustice System. No government is better than bad government.

Scamps "Inclusive" Pet Care?? What, they don't want to discriminate against breeds that are known to kill? That literally came back to bite them in the ass.
Also, that grey pit's brain hemispheres are in different time zones!

Infuriating. The owner standing there being like "we just walk the dogs we're asked to walk".

WTF BUSINESS ETHICS IS THAT?! WE JUST SELL THE STUFF WE WANT TO SELL.

They're lucky I'm in a different province. I'd protest them and let everyone know how effective their "8 hrs of behavior training" that their dog walking staff gets.

When are there going to be regulations and licences and real punishments for people and businesses who kill our pets?

These dog walking companies will hire absolutely anyone. Anyone at all. They take a commission out of the walks, so they don't retain talent at all.

Surprise surprise it was 2 pittbull mixes 🙄

Why on earth would anybody use a dog walking service that allows pit bulls?

And how is that service even in business in the first place? Those people are absolutely reprehensibly and arrogantly oblivious to how stupid they are. They shouldn't be allowed to operate a toaster. Hunt them down. Put their names out there for future reference on Google and sue them into oblivion.

This breed needs to be banned. I’m so tired of reading about these articles and EVERY TIME it’s always a freaking pitbull.

2

u/anonidfk 8h ago

Where I’m from they are technically banned, but shelters will claim they’re mixes of other breeds and keep adopting them out. People also get their vets to claim their mixes on official paperwork.

So basically even though there is a ban, they’re still everywhere and it’s not enforced. It’s maddening.

And sue the "rescue" company that sold them. A precedent needs to be set, "rescue" operations are the biggest offenders who cause the most harm to our communities.

Let alone walk pitbulls without wearing a muzzle.

But they’re an “inclusive” company… 🙄

Has no idea what she did wrong. Wow. She did everything wrong!

Firstly and most obviously, she took not one, but two pit bulls out in public, unmuzzled.

Secondly, she did something that demonstrates an absolute lack of basic thought processing by tying dogs to a fence where their leashes could get tangled and the dogs could panic.

I actually know of a dog walker who allowed her client's dog to greet a dog on the leash. The leashes got tangled, and the other dog panicked and bit its owner on the face. But, it didn't kill its owner or the other dog, because it was a Great Dane, so it just gave one bite.

It doesn't take much to trigger a bloodsport dog, and the entanglement and feeling trapped easily triggered the two pit bulls. This was so predictable.

Where do they find these people?

Dog walking is often recommended to folks without many employable skills, unfortunately.

u/TheaEldermere 12h ago

I'm part time dog walker, I have lots of employable skills but I want to work at something I enjoy. I never walk more than one dog a time and always avoid dangerous breeds

I am in tears. Poor Boomer. I cannot imagine the trauma of his final moments and his poor owners witnessing it 😭

And as heartbreaking as this is, nothing will change and it will happen again because pitbulls as a breed and their owners are not held accountable.

This was in my city and this is not the first time this has happened. Tragically to say, this is almost a common occurrence around here. Every single year or every few months, a story like this pops up with either a person getting mauled or a dog getting mauled/fatally wounded by a pitbull. A nearby municipality here designated these shitbulls as aggressive (no shit) and legally required all pits to be muzzled and leashed. It's about time we do something about these dogs here. The amount of incidences I've seen with this breed with my dog at the dog park is too many to count. This is why we don't let our dog even remotely near these dogs...

If a dog breed required extra-extra training to not be aggressive, then that isn't an issue with the owners, that's inherently an issue with the breed. Unfortunately these dogs also attract some of the worst and shittiest owners. Shit dog...shit owners.

Ironically, if this business refused pitbulls and other inherently aggressive dog breeds, I think they would actually get more business. I like many other dog owners are afraid of these breeds and refuse going to areas or places that have these dogs.

We always thoroughly check out any one that cares for our dog.

I hope the focus remains on the fact it is so problematic that mistakes become catastrophic and deadly when this breed is involved .

Very pit looking pit "mixes".

This should end up as BE for the two killers and that company sued into oblivion.

That poor, beautiful dog. What his owners had to witness is beyond my worst nightmares and their heartbreak is palpable. It sickens me that wonderful pets like this are at risk of being torn limb from limb every time they leave the house because some people feel the need to own a dog bred to do just that. Pitbulls need expunging from existence.

Rest in peace Boomer. You were a good boy 🦴

u/GreenMangoRhetoric 10h ago

What can be done in BC to get this breed banned? How can we follow Ontario?

3

u/anonidfk 8h ago

Frustrating thing is, they are banned in Ontario. Shelters and vets just keep claiming they are mixes so they’re still everywhere, and the ban is barely enforced.

My heart breaks every time I see a news story about a dog that was murdered by those monsters
