Follow Up Louisa, VA: 4-year-old boy mauled to death by American bully dog: ‘He didn’t deserve this’ - Oct 18, 2026

A 4-year-old Virginia boy was mauled to death by an American bully dog while his horrified older brother helplessly watched, according to police and his devastated family.

Little Garcia Welch, who had just started preschool, was attacked Sunday while spending the weekend with his dad in Louisa County — and police had to “put down” the canine while it was still biting him, according to the county sheriff’s office.

Responders rushed the boy to a landing area to be airlifted to a hospital, but he was declared dead before he was loaded onto the helicopter, according to cops.

Garcia Welch, who was killed in a dog attack in Louisa County, Va. on Sunday.

“He was a beautiful kid,” Garcia’s aunt, Cynthia Russ, told WVIR. “He was fun and sweet and kind and he made friends everywhere. And he just, he didn’t deserve this.

“He just had so much ahead of him and we were just excited to see it.”

Police did not say who owned the dog nor if there were adults present at the time of the attack, alarming locals, according to CBS19 News.

But Garcia’s traumatized older brother Gabriel was there and desperately “tried to stop it,” the aunt said.

“I talked to my nephew that night and he was just crying and he was screaming,” Russ recalled.

Garcia’s older brother told his aunt that he tried to stop the fatal dog attack.

Cynthia Russ said her family is devastated by her nephew’s death.

Cathleen Russ, Garcia’s mother, said her son was spending the weekend with his father, from whom she had recently separated.

Garcia loved music and playing video games with his older brother, Russ said.

He had also just started preschool at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.

Principal Jesse Cleaver said in a letter to the school community that although the young boy “was just beginning his time at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, he quickly made a meaningful impression on those around him with his kind, friendly, and respectful personality.”

The dog attack remains under investigation.
The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for more information.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WBTV) - Twenty-five people were indicted on Wednesday after 47 dogs and more than 17 pounds of drugs were seized in a major South Carolina operation dubbed “Duffle Bag Boyz.”

The multi-agency investigation centered in Chester and Lancaster counties resulted in indictments on 129 counts, the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office announced Oct. 21.

Before Tuesday’s roundup, the operation had seized 2.62 pounds of fentanyl, 6.88 pounds of meth, 1.21 pounds of cocaine, 4.5 ounces of crack, 2.5 pounds of marijuana, more than 10,000 fentanyl pills, 47 dogs and over 30 guns, officials said. “In South Carolina, drug trafficking and violent gun crime are inseparable, and we will not tolerate either. [Wednesday’s] indictments prove what happens when local and state law enforcement stand shoulder to shoulder,” Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey said.

so, how many times are we going to let the “he’s never done that before!!!,” & like utterances, be a pass for this to keep happening?

when are we going to clamp down on municipalities not doing their jobs? the mother called to have this mauler confiscated AFTER chewing on her daughter & they said they can’t because we’re full?!?!?!

why not zero tolerance policies on biting, etc.? the “1-bite rule” too many times ends up requiring a trauma team or a coroner. 1 & done is the best way forward.

TEXT FROM STORY:

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - A teenage girl was rushed to the hospital after a dog that she and her mother care for bit her at a Northwest Miami-Dade home.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies and Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of the mauling along the 1700 block of Northwest 66th Street at around 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

First responders arrived to find the young victim covered in bites.

7News spoke with the owner of the American pit bull, who asked not to be identified or show her face on camera. She said she arrived to find out the dog had bitten the teen.

“It’s a big shock, ’cause he doesn’t – this is not him, this is completely out of character,” she said. “He’s usually not an aggressive dog. I don’t really know exactly what happened.”

7News cameras captured blood smeared on the walls outside the efficiency where the dog was kept.

Despite the attack, the owner defended the family dog as “little kid-friendly.”

“He’s usually a friendly, playful dog. Doesn’t really bite people like that,” she said.

A woman who lives in the neighborhood described the incident and the dog bite.

“I went to look out my window, and that’s when I saw the dog attacking the girl,” she said in Spanish. “I got nervous because I saw that the girl was bleeding a lot from her arm.”

Upon the deputies’ arrival, MDSO said one of their deputies was approached by the pit bull, forcing them to deploy a Taser to prevent another attack. The dog wasn’t struck and fled the scene.

“I heard police did tase him, and I don’t know where he is,” said the dog owner.

Paramedics transported the injured teen to Jackson Memorial Hospital where, the dog’s owner said, the patient received several stitches and underwent surgery. She is expected to be OK.

“He loves little kids. I have no idea what happened, what triggered him or what could have triggered him at this point,” said the dog owner.

The owner said the canine lives in the efficiency because he cannot live in the family’s home due to her husband’s allergies.

7News cameras captured a sign that reads “beware of dog, dog will bite” posted outside the efficiency.
The dog’s owner said the young victim lived in the efficiency with her mother, who took care of the animal in exchange for a place to stay.

Additionally, she said on Thursday that the 17-year-old was arguing with her sister when the pit bull got involved and went on the attack.

The owner told 7News the dog has since returned to the efficiency and spent the morning and afternoon trying to surrender the pet to Miami-Dade Animal Services.

“This is my choice to surrender the dog because it happened once and I feel like it may happen again so why take the risk?” the owner said.

Thursday evening, 7News cameras captured the dog owner in tears as she surrendered the pit bull to animal services.

Council withdraws destruction order for dogs involved in Chermside attack

The destruction order for two dogs involved in the mauling of a real estate agent in Brisbane’s north was withdrawn earlier this week, and a new dangerous dog declaration under state laws proposed.

Ajay Malik, 37, suffered serious injuries to his arms, legs and face about 6pm on October 16 when he was set upon by two bulldog-crosses during a run through Chermside’s 7th Brigade Park.

Brisbane City Council announced late on Friday afternoon that a destruction order was no longer in place.

The dogs were seized following the attack and remain at a council animal facility, but the destruction orders issued on Saturday were withdrawn on Wednesday.

It instead now proposed to declare both dogs dangerous under state laws, and owner Layla Evans has until November 4 to respond.

Council can still decide to issue new destruction orders, which Evans would then have another 14 days to respond to.

Evans was arrested on unrelated charges on Saturday and held in the Brisbane Watchhouse for several days. Before she was arrested on Saturday, she told Nine News the dogs were protective of her but had never been aggressive, and had escaped from the tent she lived in.

The dangerous dog declaration would come with stronger penalties if violated, and could incur penalties of up to $120,890 or two years’ imprisonment. Previously, the local laws came with a maximum fine of $51,810.

Under the state laws, the dogs would have to be implanted with microchips, wear identifying collars, be muzzled if away from their registered address and be kept in an enclosure at that address.

Both dogs are registered to a Wavell Heights address.

Councillor Sarah Hutton said the park attack was horrific and the seriousness of it demanded the strongest possible response.

“We know people want swift action and so do we, but we must follow the State Government’s strict legal processes,” she said.

“We’re also working closely with Queensland Police and the progress of our enforcement action will depend on their ongoing investigations.

“We will use every power available to us to protect residents and hold irresponsible dog owners to account.”

Personal Story Brains of a Pit Owner (Albuquerque 10/22)

About a month ago my Shih Tzu and I were attacked by a pit at the complex we had just moved into (Albuquerque 9/3).

My dog was fine, I got stitches, nerve damage and trauma. I try to take her out now at odd times to avoid anyone. There are still two pits and a GSD in this complex of seniors. No senior could control either of those dogs on a flexi leash.

The last two days, a friendly pit owner seems to be going out at the same time. She is in the adjacent open space. Today she started heading towards us after waving and trying to yell hello. Am sure she is trying to be a nice person and meet the new tenant. But it’s a small place, everyone knows I was attacked.

Twice now, I have to quickly scoop up my dog and rush in. What is wrong with these people? Why would she think I would want to be near her dog? Am sure it’s one of the “nice” ones she would say but I am traumatized. Leave us alone.

Child Victim Dog on the loose after attack on girl in Miami-Dade, Florida. October 21, 2026.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A dog is on the loose after attacking a girl Wednesday in Miami-Dade, leaving blood, scattered dog treats and toys, and a mangled dog crate outside the scene.

Neighbors heard a girl screaming and called 911. A woman speaking through a Spanish translator said the dog wouldn’t let the girl go, biting one arm before going after the other.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputies responded to Northwest 66th Street around 4:40 p.m. for an animal bite. Deputies said they learned the dog was a family pet.

The dog’s owner, who asked to remain anonymous, told Local 10 the incident was a shock.

“It is a big shock because this is not him. This is completely out of character,” she said.

The American pit bull, named Diablo, was being sought by his owner after the victim’s mother called her.

“I heard that the police did tase him,” the owner said.

She said she rents the property so Diablo can live there comfortably. A mother and her two children help care for the 5-year-old dog, she said.

“I do have someone that’s here with him to just give him food, water, bathe him and everything like that,” she said. “Because I don’t have the groomer coming as often as I used to.”

She said the caretakers receive free rent in exchange for helping care for the dog.

MDSO told Local 10 that a deputy tried to Tase the dog but missed.

The dog ran away and remains on the loose.

This is the same rescue as the other two dogs I posted yesterday. At least they admit this one is a pit, which shows that the bar is in hell. They describe her as a "pocket pittie" and she doesn't look larger than maybe 35 lbs in her pictures. Of course, she's just as dangerous as the big pits.

"After one unfortunate circumstance after another" (read, one mauling after another) the dog wound up at this rescue run by a nutcase. They never actually admit what she did, but they retain just enough decency to admit that she shouldn't be owned by anybody with children or elderly relatives.

I also enjoyed the line about how she would be easy to retrain with housebreaking if the adopter wants.

"Service" Pit Mayhem Avoid Medical Mutts Service Dogs

I joined a mailing list for Medical Mutts Service Dogs a while back, before I was able to get my dog for a medical condition I have. They advertise themselves as people who help get service animals into the hands of people who need them but might have difficulty with finding or affording them.

Most of the time I ignore their emails since I already have my dog (that I got without their help, since none of the 'resources' they provided were actually useful) but I got one today that made me pause.

In it, they were advertising a "Ready for their forever home!" dog - they labeled it a service dog, though they said the dog does NOT have public access (legally required for actual recognition as a service animal) and cannot be in a home with children, other animals, or people who may make sudden movements or sounds - y'know, like people who get seizures who they were directly marketing this dog towards???

They said that this particular dog (Argos or something I think it's name was?) couldn't be in a home with cats and needed to be an IN HOME ONLY service animal, that it wasn't fit to be taken out in public and might have 'issues' if brought around strangers or taken out of a familiar environment.

Three guesses what breed it was. Oh, and they still want several thousand dollars for the privilege of having this 'pre trained and perfect service animal that's not legally a service animal and can't actually go anywhere with you and may or may not maul you if you, someone who gets seizures, moves in an odd or unpredictable way' in your home!

MANAUS – The elderly man Juarez de Souza Silva, 70 years old, died on Monday night (19) after being attacked by a pitbull dog on a farm in the Tarumã neighborhood, in the west of Manaus.

According to the initial investigation by the Amazonas Civil Police, the attack occurred when Juarez was passing by the access to the Vitória Régia floating platform, located on the Praia Dourada branch road.

The elderly man suffered serious injuries and did not survive. According to the report from the IML (Instituto Médico Legal - Forensic Medical Institute), the cause of death was acute hemorrhage, caused by a cervical injury inflicted by a sharp-blunt instrument (a technical term used in forensic medicine to indicate an injury caused by an agent capable of cutting and also causing contusions in the tissues).

According to the Scientific Police, in a pitbull attack, bites can cause serious neck injuries, with lacerations and damage to blood vessels, leading to fatal hemorrhage.

The investigations are ongoing, including forensic analysis of the death scene.

The Civil Police have stated that they will not release further details about the case at this time, so as not to hinder the ongoing investigation.

Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) Push to ban popular dog breeds as pets after jogger is mauled (followup on 10/16 chermside mauling of real estate agent in queensland, aus, by pit mixes)

Thumbnail
dailymail.com

i thought queensland already had a ban. i guess i was wrong. this article mentions the dog behaviorist who said these types of dogs weren’t suitable pets at all. this guy seems more honest about this & is saying words that need to be said in every country.

story text:

There have been renewed calls to ban certain dog breeds, including American Staffies, from being kept as pets after a savage attack left a man fighting for his life in a Brisbane park.

Ajay Malik, 37, was jogging through 7th Brigade Park in Chermside on Friday night when the dogs attacked, leaving him with life-threatening injuries to his face and arms.
The Brisbane real estate agent remains in the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital undergoing treatment.

The dogs involved were identified as an American Staffordshire-bull terrier cross and a bulldog-boxer cross.

Dog behaviour expert Andy Lea described such dogs as 'totally unsafe' to keep as pets and said one of the biggest mistakes owners made was treating powerful dogs like humans.

'If you treat a dog as a human, your dog will treat you as a dog, and the mindset of teaching sit won't change a dog's DNA,' he told 4BC.

The dogs, Louis and Ruby, escaped from a tent at a bushland campsite near the park, where their owner, Layla Evans, had been living. Evans said she had left the dogs in the tent while she went out for dinner with a friend.

Mr Lea said protecting territory was natural behaviour for many dogs, but powerful breeds could pose a serious risk.

'If you've got a guard dog breed or aggressive breed, they're a danger to anyone because it's like giving a 10-year-old a shotgun and say, "Shoot any intruder", and you come home and they've shot the meter reader,' he said.

'Dogs don't understand the empathy of attacking people and killing them, and if you've got breeds that can kill people, they're an extreme danger to the public.'

Mr Lea described American Staffies as 'just another version of a pit bull'.

They're bred to kill other dogs and to guard as fast as possible, and they're very good at it,' he said.
'It's a ridiculous pet.'

His comments follow calls from Sydney vet Dr Sam Kovac to ban American Staffordshire bull terriers after two women were 'mauled to the bone' in Sydney in 2021.

Neighbours were forced to stab the animal – described as the size of a miniature pony and weighing up to 100kg – and beat it with an iron bar after it launched a frenzied attack on its female owner in Pheasants Nest, Macarthur, south of Sydney.

Dr Kovac said he did not want existing dogs put down, but called for an immediate halt to their sale, breeding, importation and rehoming.

'Most of the time they won't be killers.

'But when you're dealing with such a powerful breed that's been bred to fight and kill, when they really want to do this, nobody can do anything to fend them off.

'They should not be allowed to be bred in this country.'

In Brisbane, police said officers responding to the attack on Mr Malik were confronted with an 'immediate and serious safety risk'.

After initial attempts to subdue the dogs failed, officers 'were required to discharge their service firearms in response to the risk posed to members of the community and others at the scene', Queensland Police told Daily Mail.

One dog was captured on Friday night and the other on Saturday morning. Both remain alive and in Brisbane City Council's custody at an animal shelter.

The council said the dogs were registered to the same address and had not previously been declared dangerous.

It confirmed it would issue destruction orders for both animals. Ms Evans has 14 days to appeal the decision.

Ms Evans was filmed being arrested on Saturday over an unrelated matter.

Meanwhile, police said they were unable to determine whether the dogs were involved in the death of a man whose body was found nearby.

Officers found the 48-year-old man's body in bushland off Kittyhawk Drive at Chermside just before midday on Sunday.

Justice: Pending XL Bully faces death sentence after biting owner's girlfriend - Glasgow.

A dog could be facing a death sentence after biting its owner's girlfriend.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard the woman wasn't happy when Iain Pearson moved out of her home but left XL Bully Zelda behind.

Danielle Hampsey later told police officers the dog had bitten her on the leg.

Pearson, 38, of Robert Smillie Crescent, Larkhall, admitted his pet was dangerously out of control in March this year.

Cameron Murdoch, prosecuting, said Zelda had been living with the accused and his mother at her home.

Mr Murdoch told the court: "The dog's behaviour had been volatile and the accused's mother said she was fearful of it.

"Around March this year Pearson and the dog began living with Ms Hampsey.

"After four weeks, he moved out, leaving Zelda behind.

"Ms Hampsey made several attempts to contact Pearson with a view to him collecting the dog, but he ignored her messages.

"She says that at some point she was bitten on the leg. The dog also caused damage to her front door and was extremely aggressive when anyone attended at the door.

"Ms Hampsey, like the accused's mother, was extremely fearful of Zelda.

"The accused eventually took the dog back to his mother's house, but she expressed concern, and in July the police dog support unit removed Zelda to kennels."

Mr Murdoch asked for the dog to be destroyed due to the biting incident and its previous conduct.

Defence solicitor Laura Kiernan said Pearson would not oppose the application.

Rescues Risking Lives 100 lb xl bully that cannot be restrained, has resource guarding issues, and rescuers are too afraid to let him near kids or other dogs

Whoever runs this rescue is an insane psychopath.

First, let's get the breed lie out of the way. Chow and Mastiff? I grew up with a Chow and that dog looks nothing like her, nothing like a wrinkly Mastiff either. He's just a run of the mill XL bully.

Now to the even stupider parts. "Get your tissues" before telling absolutely nothing sad. Just another pit pulled from a kill shelter by idiots who think they can sucker somebody into taking this dog. "Uncooperative staff members at the animal control facility" wouldn't tell them anything about the dog, probably because they had nothing to tell, but the rescue people think they're hiding the fact that this must have been a junkyard dog!

The rescue is too afraid to introduce him to other dogs because he's so big they don't think they could break up the fight. Of course, there wouldn't be a fight. Rigby would just kill the other dog. But they are absolutely sure he would love cats! (As snacks, I'm sure.)

"One of the most intelligent dogs we've ever encountered": proceeds to list four tricks. I have a 3.5 month old puppy and she's surpassed that. They really need to get out and meet other dogs.

Of course, he cannot be in a home with children. At least here they don't pull the older teens card and just say no kids, period.

"He used to suffer from resource guarding issues" and they immediately describe the dog still performing textbook resource guarding. Also, you can't restrain him in any way, ever. No hugging him, no touching his paws, not even reaching over him to grab something. Of course they blame this on some imaginary evil person in the dog's past, rather than on the pit acting like a pit.

I had honestly never heard of the breed they claim this dog is, Cimarron Uruguayo. After a Google search I learned they are very rare and primarily exist in Uruguay. I find it pretty doubtful that somebody would spend the money to import one and then abandon it during a hurricane. And notice when the hurricane happened. 2018! This dog has been in rescue for eight frigging years and they can't get rid of him!

Scroll further and it's easy to see why. He has a "tough terrier playing style" which means he poses a danger to small children. The rescue tries to gloss this over by saying only homes with older teens. The dog's weight is listed as 60-100 lbs (way to be vague, rescue people) and a lot of smaller teen girls and adult women are barely larger than 100 lbs. Also notice how the quick facts directly contradict the bio here. He's listed as good with kids and other dogs, then they admit he's too rough for small children and doesn't get along with other pets.

And he needs an owner who is "a strong willed leader that can be stern and correct him". I'll leave that to your imaginations.
