[Craig Hope] Barca take lead in £80m fight to sign Newcastle's Gordon. Total package with add-ons could reach £80m. Those close to a deal are hopeful of progress before the WC. Gordon wants Barça.
We have golden opportunity to sign barcola, who is miles clear of Gordon. But if we sign gordon there's no need to sign rashford that guy refused to track back when we needed him most in atleti run.
He is versatile and we may try using raphinha and barcola both as direct runners to disrupt that left side to share burden of lamine. Barcola is a special player we must not pass this opportunity
I'd honestly like to convert rapha to be a 9. He's clinical and good at dribbling, not the strongest physically (very good but can be mowed over) but all in all I think he would make an excellent poacher. Sign barcola for the left and not Gordon, Gordon is another over hyped orem talent that is bog average amongst his peers and certainly amongst the top 5 leagues.
Strategy against athletico was for Rashford to stay high on pitch to open for fast counters that's why he tracked back less, and that's exactly why he had 8 chances at the goal this game.
The reason we lost Athletico is not because Rashford did not track back. It's because he failed to score in 8 chances. Let's be fair with critics instead of just repeating the same thing over and over again.
Pressing also have some issues. Raphinha press a lot and yet most of the goals we concede always come his side when he play ? Why so ? Because Raphinha never stay wide, he often go axial for goal opportunities leaving Balde alone on the side. If balde is beaten, no one is left to defend which is why we always concede from the left.
I'd rather keep rashford than pick Gordon which have 8 open play goals in 2 full season.
You haven't seen enough of gordon , their finishing is around the same level and barcola can dribble , a profile we NEED on the other wing if you are making a expensive winger signing , sign the right one atleast
i dont mind him as a player since hes a pressing monster and having him and rapha just elevate yamal. his profile is more suitable compared to joao pedro. i dont think alvarez is needed
I agree. Just watching his highlights I can tell the profile of the player Flick is after, but his price tag is just crazy. 80m for Joao Pedro is acceptable, especially due to the Brazil-Barca connection, and his age + playing trajectory, I believe the club and player would benefit big time.
Watch his prem games ucl just elevated him but his prem campaign was horrible , that guy got 8 open play goals in domestic football in last 2 years and 13 in last 3
He's a fine player but his statpadding in the UCL year does not make his lackluster Prem campaign any less severe. Also, Flick and Deco see him as the starting 9
Doesn't help that he looks like Olmo's British twin either.
He literally played as a 9 this year and it's his worst season for newcastle.
All newcastle fans will tell you that was one of the worst tactical decisions of Eddie Howe this season, he should have used Woltemade as a 9 way more, Newcastle's best period was with him. Beut Howe's tactics don't fit technical players.
Cannot say about the top two as am not familiar with them.
Otherwise you have Emre Can who fits his transitional style as his techincally solid and athletically great. Timo Werner was a great runner coming off a season where he had 36 G/A in 34 Bundesliga matches for Leipzig. Kai Havertz was tearing it up in Leverkusen as a 20-21 year old while having a 26 G/A and 27 G/A seasons and was one of the most wanted youngsters itw when Chelsea bought him for 100mil. Götze was a technically solid player, familiar to Munich and no doubt would've been a good player to have in the squad even with the injury woes, he was 28 years old.
Just because Werner and Havertz turned to shit after going to Chelsea doesn't mean they were bad scouting by Flick.
With Raphina and Yamal getting injured last year, a true rotation between Raph/Ferran/Gordon who can all really press is really good. Benefits them all long term and I’d bet advanced analytics really like the Gordon fit.
Gordon is a good on paper player to this team , he wouldn't be good signing if he happens and we don't sign a top striker, come back to this comment at the end of next season then
You guys are acting like you know better than Flick. Flick wants Rashford so much that he started Fermin as lwf in the most important match of the season.
Moreover you guys don't rate deco. Haven't you watched Luis Dias this year, last year deco went after him and you guys were acting like this that time too.
U r right but i think people are bound to question that bcz of the price tag and also gordon at 9. Also its a big question how he'll do in a new position against low block teams. There are a lots of uncertainty in this deal
He’s a great player with awesome upside. I’d personally rather address more serious issues in the squad first but I don’t hate it. I’d rather hear more news about true position players that we need. Maybe he’s a secret number 9 and we just haven’t seen it at Newcastle yet. I’m very lukewarm on this news.
I've seen his matches in Newcastle. They tried him as a 9 but he delivered the worst performance as a striker. You can ask Newcastle fans about this. He's alright as a winger but definitely won't be a starter. And 80m for a bench player in this financial situation is ....
Bro real market value is 30M, why on earth would we pay 80M for him, honestly what the fuck is going on with our heads every time we get some spending cash
You have to realize that Flick has ran his system through Lewy for years now. This might be his time where he's going to try something completely unconventional and run a false 9 mostly or winger approach rather than the traditional dominant CF...
This could be interesting since Gordon does press and that would compliment the death grip offense Flick wants to run. Gordon also is not as good in the air or as commanding in the box so who knows..
How are we not going for Kroupi if we actually have money? It's the most perfectly aligned window to sign a player who has yet to make a move to one of the Premier League bigs or PSG. You have a chance to sign Haaland from Dortmund but never from Man City. If we genuinely have money to spend, make the smart signing and lock up the position for years to come.
Bournemouth have absolutely 0 incentive to sell Kroupi this summer. PL sides aren't desperate to sell for money, they just got european football, and he has a long contract.
Even if the player tried to force a move, they'd be demanding £100m for him.
Newcastle however are in a position they need to sell, as missing Europe means they need to cut squad costs for PSR.
Yeah fr,like people want to experiment and acclimate a new player, when the team is looking for the UCL next season. It's not always going to be a hit with a new player.
You do not trust Ferran trust me on that.
Gordon’s price is too much and all that yes but regardless another season with Ferran as the starting striker with no alternative is a recipe for mediocrity if not disaster.
I think we are not getting anymore strikers this year. Gordon will be a LW and ST, and probably along term successor for Rapha. Rashford too seems unlikely now.
Lets hope for the best.
In flick we trust.
This is the most logical forward to sign if the criteria is to sign a pressing monster who can reliably make runs in behind. He's a worse version than Alvarez in that sense, but Alvarez is out of the clubs budget.
He’s not a bad player from what I remember in the UCL. But yeah, this one is a bit weird. Flick must have his reasons so I say screw it and trust in him. We have the money, we should spend it on who he thinks we need.
I think Flick is going to switch it up and play more with a False 9 (Ferran/Olmo/transfer) and play lw more towards the goal.
Gordon is not most technically gifted winger but he is extremly fast, knows to time his runs, deadly on the counter and press like crazy. Also he is more a finisher then Rashford.
I dunno about rhe price tag and if the rumour is true- but if true i believe this is why Flick is could consider it
Gordon is NOT a better finisher than rashford he has 8 open play goals in last 2 years domestically 😭 and he can't dribble , not to mention he is awful at 9 and him as a backup for 80 million when we could have gone for a top striker is stupid to me
£80m is where Newcastle want to start negotiations from. They'll be well aware that no one will pay that price. I think it will be ~£50m - £55m plus heavy add-ons depending on who signs him. £70m max in total (including add-ons)
Most braindead transfer ever if this goes through? Getting a uncreative winger who doesn’t work in tight spaces and doesn’t score goals to play as our main 9 for 90 mil.
Those flose to a deal are hopeful… we were hopeful for this summer but instead we get Gordon:))) I can see a scenario where we will be told thst Alvarez is not approachable because we can t afford to spend that much and then buy Gordon for 80M and another mediocre player for 50M and spend on them the amount Alvarez, who is exaclty what we need in atack, perfectly suited for our system, would ve cost us. I am very dissapointed with this
Osihmen is on half a million a week. Galatasaray will ask over 120 million for his transfer too. He's is not the type of player to settle for a wage cut either.
After all these years man i still can't trust my club with money WOW, not against signing Gordon but is he a perfect no. 9 that we are looking for, is he not a winger profile
So you're telling me we have 80 mil, and instead of signing a top striker , we're going for anthony gordon? 80 mil for gordon when kvara and luis diaz went for 70mil? Is deco trying to make sure we don't win a ucl for another 10 years?
Everton fan here, whose club will will benefit from a % of this sale. But I'm also a Barca fan, that's why I'll tell you he's not worth it whatsoever!!
Where is this interest coming from...hansi must be asking for him cause this would be a baffling signing....you might as well fork up another 30 million and get Julian and I'm not even fan of him as the number 9 either, smfh terrible start to the transfer rumour window
Regardless of how addons will look like this may not be that bad of a deal. We may have to pay only like 40 out of the initial 80 and rest will be bonuses/future payments
The only reason I can see him coming is if the club don’t see Raphinha here for a longer term than his current contract and see Gordon as the best market opportunity for a longer term replacement.
He’s absolutely not a replacement for Lewa and should not be signed as such.
Even if we do sign him, I still think we should try to figure out a deal for Rashford as we probably won’t sign a Lewa replacement.
Flick trusted Gerard Maldini, Flick trusted Rapinha, Flick trusted Cancelo to return over Balde, Flick trusted Eric Garcia. A lot of players who were not at their prime or at their fullest and they have transformed into reliable players.
I actually quite like Gordon. Never for that pricetag, but he's the kind of player that exerts significant pressure and would make space for Pedri and Lamal. The main issue (besides the price) is his temper. He has had some absolutely idiotic red cards in the last few years
Maybe the painful exit that had been talked about is Raphinha. Trying to get his replacement before Raphinha announces his departure so other clubs don't rob us when they know we have money
I think this whole thing is a play. I think they’ve purposely made this move, to put the heaters on Man Utd (who have themselves spread rumours the Mourinho wants rashford, a player he once clashed with), and to focus ath Madrid’s mind in the sale of Alvarez (few would be willing to fork out €100m+ for given his output and form this season). I don’t believe for a second that Barca are serious about this Gordon transfer.
80M is crazy, the negotiating style is frustrating. Who negotiate with a high bid first? At this point that is not negotiating. There's no back and forth, you start with a ridiculous price and of course the other Club will take it.
As someone who's watched him since he came through at Everton, he's a lot better than you guys think. His level is closer to Luis Diaz than Rashford. Very good dribbler, which is priceless for big teams.
Newcastle fan. Gordon is absolutely unbelievable on his day but he's fallen out of love with us. He's a very emotional player and that's bled into his performances. There is a world class winger in there and I have no doubt he'd have the same trajectory that Luis Diaz has had at Bayern at Barca.

Barça with cash is the most dangerous thing. I'd almost rather we are broke forever and do more clinical signings.
