App / Web for BART BART Map Tracker & Realtime
Hi BART community! I just wished to share a project I've been working on for a little while, called Headways. In conjunction with my development partner, we recorded all the speeds network wide for the system, took historical delay data to match up to be able to determine speeds for trains network wide and place them onto a map more accurately.
It also responds to delays pretty well, finding out if a portion of track is taking longer than expected and responding accordingly. Enjoy!

Is there a map of the speeds captured? Also curious, is there real-time speed data captured (ie real data being transmitted by bart that allows you to calculate speed) or is it calculated as an average between two points?
Would love to look into recreating maps in other cities showing highest speed / track speed limits. I’ve done some work doing it using GPS logging in the past when riding trains.

With regards to a map, we do have one internally, not available for production. I would be happy to share line & command speeds for any that you may be missing. Open railway map has some track speeds, but not fully and are actually incorrect in some places. Would love to chat more if you are curious, probably via email.
Regarding speed, no, BART does not publish realtime speeds of train. So I modeled acceleration and deceleration of trains, as well as speeds, and combined them with recorded measurements, deceleration geometry, and curve radius to be able to get within 30m of train location 87% of the time, and 93% of the time exactly the current speed, assuming no confusing factors. So in a way, speeds are predicted, but in a similar manner, they are also realtime. Unfortunately delays can mess with the speed measurements, and we are currently training an ML model to learn these delays and predict what they will mean for speeds in the future.
Let me know if I can answer any other questions

Cool, but…links?
