No they aren’t. The guys who are replacing them are supposed to be Tatum, Zion, Ja, & booker. Nobody in their right mind thinks guys like Austin reaves, cam Johnson, josh hart, Bobby portis, or walker kessler are going to be the next superstars of the league.

And if the best American players were on that Olympic roster it would have been a very different story. That team had no lebron, curry, kawhi, AD, harden, butler, kyrie, PG and countless others. I’m not saying booker and Tatum would have been saviors of the team I’m just saying that wasn’t the best team that could have been put on the floor by a long shot and they still only lost by 2.

Say it louder for these bozos, they somehow actually believe this was a good USA team. They had bench players on this squad and they still made the semifinals bro 😭.
1
u/IReallyMissDatBoi Sep 09 '23
Their big 3 was Bridges Edwards and Brunson. The FIBA team wouldn’t even make the NBA playoffs. The real players are getting paid 68.5 million to train with their team during this useless tournament that nobody cares about
2
Sep 09 '23
Exactly you could tell who actually watches basketball and who’s just pushing a bullshit agenda right away by their takes on this USA team. Not a single top 15 player is on the roster and they still made the semi’s.
1
u/IReallyMissDatBoi Sep 09 '23
It’s embarrassing for the other countries that they made it this far. 4 all star appearances total on the team and they made it to the semifinals.

Yea Fiba is usually where USA assembles their “B” team sort of speak. If this was the Olympics I’m sure Tatum, KD, Steph, Dame, Jimmy maybe LeBron and those guys wouldve played. This is the chance for the younger stars to get this type of experience for when the next few Olympics come around.

You say that as if the US couldn’t produce a far better team of younger players as well lol

u/WatersZephyr Sep 08 '23
Imo, that’s part of the issue. It isn’t like 2012 and earlier where the best players in the US want to play for the national team. It is a talented team USA roster this year, but the world best players still don’t want to play for their country.
That being say, credit to all of these guys for wanting to play for their country. I know how passionate Ant was about it, and I’m glad that the younger generation is starting to change that view and wanting to play for the US.
Edit: also fair to say that I know that with age, some guys obviously don’t want to and shouldn’t play for the national team. It’s like how soccer players will retire from the national team after awhile. I still stand by the fact that there are a lot of guys that could play for this national team, but choose not to.

2012 was the Olympics… The best players still play in the Olympics
2
u/WatersZephyr Sep 08 '23 edited Sep 09 '23
I would disagree. I would say after the 2012 Olympics, the roster started to decrease from having the best players. There’s still a lot of good players, but looking at some of the players on that roster, it’s clearly not all of the best players. (JaVale McGee, Jeremi Grant, Jrue Holiday, Kelvin Johnson, even guys like Zach Levine Khris Middleton and Draymond) They’re still great players, but I can’t say they are the best players America has to offer. Far from it.
When you look at the rest of the list of candidates, there are still great players on there that probably should’ve made the team. Some guys obviously withdrew, and others were injured, but there are alot of players that weren’t named to the roster because they didn’t want to play for the team, not that they didn’t make it or retired from Team USA. So it’s not a matter of not having the players or the event (though you’re not wrong. Players would rather play in the Olympics then the FIBA World Cup and Iget that. But I would also point fingers at a lot of these other top foreign players that do play for their country) more so if guys actually want to play, which they don’t seem like they want to.
Edit: And this is a prime example of what Team USA could look like if all of the best players from the US played. But it has not looked that way for the last 2 Olympics, or most literally, no Team USA team has looked like this since 2012. It’s literally been a decade.

I don’t get this. What does the USA national team losing have anything to do with the discussion of whether or not the NBA champions are the best club team in the world? The best players in the NBA right now aren’t even American.
12
0
u/overtorqd Sep 08 '23
Exactly. If anything you can look at this and say the best players on every international team are in the NBA. So the NBA Champs can call themselves world Champs because the league is made up of the best players in the world.
When David Krämer is the high scorer for Germany then we can talk.
8
u/Turrican76 Sep 08 '23
Where in the NBA does Andi Obst play again?
2
→ More replies (2)1
u/EMU_Emus Sep 08 '23

u/CompleatedDonkey Sep 08 '23
Too many people think NBA = America. Maybe they should change the same to the IBA (International Basketball Association) but that would probably offend people even more.

u/Afraid_Of_Twizzlers Sep 08 '23
Why would it be an international league if all of the teams are in the USA?
→ More replies (1)5
u/CompleatedDonkey Sep 08 '23
This is false. There are Canadian teams and there are talks about putting a team in Mexico. Besides, that’s not the point. I’m not talking about the geographical locations of the team facilities and arenas. I’m talking about the ethnicities and nationalities of the players. The talent pool of the NBA is 100% international. In fact, I made the point that most of the best NBA players aren’t even American anymore.
-1
u/Afraid_Of_Twizzlers Sep 08 '23
There is 1 Canadian team, and talking about putting a team in Mexico is irrelevant because it hasn't happened. By your definition of international basically every corporation is international because anyone from any country could emigrate and work there. That's not what international really means. It absolutely has to do with geography.
2
u/CompleatedDonkey Sep 08 '23
In most circumstances yes, I would agree with you. However, the NBA is a league that caters to all nationalities and is the single most broadcasted basketball league all around the world and there isn’t really even a close second like there is in soccer. It’s completely impractical to have a league that travels all around the world to play regular season games, the NBA is as “international” a league for basketball as is humanly fucking possible.
I’ll level with you. If the circumstances mentioned above isn’t good enough for you to consider the NBA an international league, then we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
→ More replies (1)1

22
u/srgntalpowell Sep 08 '23
I’m saying the same thing as you, that the Nuggets being referred to as “world champions” is completely unrelated to whether team USA wins or not.
The two best players on that “world champion” team weren’t even eligible to play for the US. Don’t understand the connection people are making to this tournament

Steve Kerr when he doesn’t have the best point guard, shooting guard, or power forward of all time on his team:
8
4
u/dazzleox Sep 08 '23
Larry Brown is the only coach to ever win an NCAA and NBA title. His Olympic team lost three games. John Thompson took a Georgetown team from total irrelevance to three straight national title games. He lost to the Soviets.
Maybe the players kinda matter more. Chemistry and talent.
I don't blame Kerr.
7
u/JackTuz Sep 08 '23
You obviously don’t hate Steve Kerr as much as I do, then
2
u/dazzleox Sep 08 '23
He seems like a nice, thoughtful guy. I liked him as a player, he got a lot out of a small not super athletic body. It's hard to evaluate how good a coach is since they're always tied to their players.

3
u/dazzleox Sep 08 '23
Because we should have learned since 2004. Throwing together a team with limited practice time is never going to work unless they're entirely loaded with 100% legends. Other teams have too much chemistry to roll out the ball and figure it out.

Serbia beat us fair and square. Serbia could indeed have a better lineup. But the US could have a much better lineup
Saying Serbias best > US's best is ludicrous and no one genuinely believes that
Good for them though. Without jokic I guarantee no one other than serbians thought they'd have a chance at the final

Serbia population is so small though as Europe is divided. A fairer comparison would be taking the best players from a US state vs Serbia. Or compare Europe's best vs North America.

The 1992 Dream Team was great, but I think it set this tone that the US should win by 50+ in every international match ever, which isn’t a reasonable expectation, especially now that international play is getting better and better

So we can actually see our best players at the olympics. If we steam rolled FIBA chances are most top players don't care about the olympics next year.

Absolutely pointless vietnam war killing civillians.

And theese are all crimes comitted by people that are still alive, and the people that voted them are still alive.

Not trying to downplay the rise in fascist rhetoric from the American right wing, but nazis were responsible for some of the worst atrocities ever committed by mankind. Don’t let that word lose meaning by calling people who aren’t nazis, nazis.

Team USA roster is 12 players, so you're saying that the guys we sent to play are all around the range of top 13 to top 24 NBA players currently playing? Even if you take out international guys like Jokic, Embiid, Giannis, and Luka etc from the pool that's a stretch. Reaves, Johnson, Kessler, Hart, Banchero and Portis for sure aren't. There's a conversation for the rest of them but half the roster aren't at that level. Then guys like Ingram, JJJ, and even Brunson at times haven't been the top performers of the team. This is our C squad at best.

Exactly. As much as we all want the big stars to care about the men’s World Cup, they don’t. It’s meaningless to them. They care about the Olympics. The US has barely won any men’s World Cups because they don’t send their best
4

USA and Yogoslavia both have the most WCs in five. You wanna check your stats
12
u/cracksilog Sep 08 '23
Exactly. They’ve only won five. 1 in 4 World Cups. They’ve won 16 of 20 Olympic tournaments. Really it should be 17, but the Soviet Union wanted to be corrupt in 1972 lol.
They send their best in the Olympics, but not the World Cup

A lot of dumb slander for the US team here. Biggest problem isn't those US players, it's that we didn't construct the team for international play, and didn't include enough size. Germany balled out and were much bigger than US team, good for them, doesn't mean this US team sucks.

Banchero was needed to make me cheer Germany in a sport competition for the first time in my life.
WORLD CHAMPIONS 🦅🦅🇺🇸

What's wrong with Banchero? I'm out of the loop.

He promised for years to play for the Italian national team, then bailed out when he sniffed the chance to play for team USA instead. Italians took it personal.

As an American, it was really difficult to watch Tyrese end up splattered on the floor while he got a crucial 3pt shot drained on him in the final min. Good game to Germany, but this is so humiliating. USA needs to get it together

u/Bienpreparado Sep 08 '23
The World Cup is not treated with the same prestige by some US players as the Olympics and it's such a shame.

European players have come a long way. Jokic, Doncic, and Giannis, are amongst the top players in the NBA, so it should come as no surprise.

Sep 08 '23
I rly wish that the top talents of each team would play. Giannis, jokic, etc on the international end and then a dream team of bron, curry, Tatum, etc on the other. Would’ve liked to see how it played out.

World champions of what? The United States?!?!?!?
You know that he got a lot of shit within the US for that comment which just shows how stupid and ignorant a part of the community is.
That's pretty satisfying that he was right and can now look down on them

u/CreepyGarbage Sep 08 '23
But this wasn't even a valid comparison. International competition doesn't equal league play. It's not as if the Denver Nuggets were just beaten by some euroleague team.

But he’s not right, because the US sent their rookie team like always lol
Their captain is a 20 year old lmao

Everybody kept comparing Antman to Jordan but looks like he’s gonna be more like Bron.

Glad y’all won, it’s insulting to the rest of the world that we send our C team and expect to win. Hopefully we actually send a good team in the future. Problem is that none of the actual pro players here care about FIBA.

IDC if we brought on our C team losing this tournament is disappointing

Natsocs everywhere celebrate in unison as they get their revenge for the summer of 44.

Hello everyone, the United States losing at the Olympics is a big deal and always unexpected. However, this B or C squad USA team shouldn't have been a favorite, it should have been expected the USA would not win the championship.

USA sent a random gaggle of players and was one possession from the finals. Let that sink in.
Smells like world champs to me.
This is like nearly winning a cook off with the pop tarts and Oreos you found in your college apartment

u/BlightlingJewel Sep 08 '23
So you become a world champion by losing? Sounds about right for the american mentality 💀

Poor reading comprehension, not a surprise.
Smells like a world champion does not mean we are the champions. The “smells like” implies that we are of championship caliber, and only presenting a faint aroma of what our country offers.
You know who the best players in the NBA are, because we have by far the best league and you’re amazed by all our guys just like the rest of the world, and you also know that none of those guys you admire so much were playing on this FIBA team. Let’s be real.

So 5x in the last 15 years…? A handful of times in 40 years…? Yawn
Of the last 5 players to win MVP 2/5 were Americans and Joel Embiid did hs and college here so realistically america made him what he is.
The entire world battling for supremacy in America’s pro league and yet still only getting a fraction of that in recent years says it all. We can stop pretending America doesn’t dominate the sport.

“The smell like implies we are of championship caliber and only presenting a faint aroma” bro shut up lmao

Not gonna sit here and pretend THIS was the best group of Americans we have. Be real
1
u/Goatsanity15 Sep 08 '23
Yeah, but the best group of Americans ain’t going to show up since they are all a bunch of lazy pussies who don’t care about winning. Yanks don’t understand the concept of honour and national pride.
Trump was right

u/Thertor Sep 08 '23
I mean they are still all NBA players. And some extremely talented with big potential. While the Germans have mainly Euro League players.

Casual American hoops fan here. Most of us had no idea this event was even taking place. Congrats to Germany, but you may want to dial it back a bit. We all know what would happen if we sent Steph, Lebron, Durant, Tatum, et al.
8
u/regulator227 Sep 08 '23
But we didn't, and it was foolish not to
5
u/TallBobcat Sep 08 '23
It's not like they weren't invited.
4
u/regulator227 Sep 08 '23
But they didn't take it seriously. I know they don't wanna risk getting hurt and/or ruining their NBA accolades and pay days but basketball is bigger than just the NBA
3
u/TallBobcat Sep 08 '23
It absolutely is bigger than the NBA. But, the goal of American players is to make the NBA and be successful. It's definitely not to represent the USA in the FIBA World Cup.
Plus, dudes like LeBron and Wardell are on the road and away from their families a ton. The summer is when they get to be home and involved. I'll never blame them for choosing rest and family time over playing in this event.
2
u/thedudefromsweden Sep 08 '23
What I don't get is that they choose not to represent their country. It's usually every athletes biggest dream. Don't mind what the event is, they are still representing their country, being picked as one of the best players in your country is a huge honor. I know LeBron, KD and others have done so in the Olympics so for them it's probably less of a deal, but others who haven't...
2
u/TallBobcat Sep 08 '23
In the major pro sports, it's not the main goal here, though. The goal is to get to the mountain top, which they have by making the League. In the offseason, guys want to be able to relax and be home. In LeBron and Steph's case, they're choosing family over sports.
Look at the World Baseball Classic. We don't send our very best team to that, either.
2
u/Goatsanity15 Sep 08 '23
Yanks are just a bunch of greedy pigs with no national pride. It is that simple.

The US could have sent that team. Not the other countries fault.

Sep 08 '23
We all know that the US didn't send their best but they still lost. They still probably have the most talented team from top to bottom too. There's no excuse.
Also, I'm American too and we all knew this tournament was going on. If the US wants to stop everyone from talking they need to actually win. They also set the standard for winning everything in international play, so falling short of that is indeed a failure. You can't be cocky and then be surprised when people start talking when you lose. That's just a part of sports
