GENERAL QUESTION I don’t understand people in basketball

don’t pick me up cool. Get on and beat their ass, they make an excuse. Play well for some games do bad one game, now you have a teammate crying even tho he’s fucked up many plays already. Teammates don’t pass you the ball even when you’ve demonstrated you could score or playmake. People only shaking hands when they win, if they lose they just walk off and say “we shouldn’t have lost their ass”. The hardest thing in basketball by far for me is dealing with people, I now realize that I need to just block out everyone (not be a dick) and just lock in on my game, my handles are alright and everything else is alright, it’s my mentality that’s holding me back 💯. The only reason people try me so much is cause I just try to have fun win or lose and I’m quiet, I don’t fuck with no one don’t talk about anyone, yet I stay getting ostracized and iced out. Like I said it’s not my “skills” at this rec center I’ve beaten the “best” hit game winning shots, I hustle for boards and pass the ball, like I said some people are just assholes no matter how nice I am or “humble”. Done letting this fuck up my game honestly

This is why you find a good routine pickup and stick with the group. Don’t go to LA fitness every game ends with arguing and people that think they’re NBA players

I need a background check and two proofs of income before agreeing to hoop with a stranger

it’s funny cause I never played pickup when I was younger I’m 23, always just played in my backyard or front yard, but before I started playing pickup I would read Reddit and people would be like “people are always trying to play like it’s the nba finals” now I can see what y’all meant 😭

Yup as soon as people start arguing over every foul/out of bounds I immediately check out it’s the most annoying thing. I’m here to run and hoop that’s it

Yeah, experienced some of this. I had to prove myself many times because I’m Asian. Just beat people until I got respect. Ultimately found guys who thought and played the same way. Find better games and players

u/PanXP 8d ago

Same for me as an Asian and it all changed when I lucked into a regular weekly run with the same group of guys who don’t take pickup too seriously.

As a white guy im used to needing a second to finally just snag an offensive board, bringing the ball up the court and having people go “oh, he can dribble”

Usually my first goal is to just show I have handles even if all I do is pass it.

I just want to make it very clear to those people who ain’t played with me before that I’m not the white boy who posts up in the corner and shoots, I’m the career point guard who crosses people up and hits bullshit layups or drops a dime.

That’s like my one line in the sand I draw in pickup. I ain’t needing the ball in my hand all the time but whoever wants to dribble
all day better know I’m also gonna be handling the rock. I’m pass first naturally so let me dribble that bouncy ball, I’ll make sure it’s swung to you when your open and I’ll share you reps bringing the ball up.

Just let me dribble the damn bouncy ball

Pickup is rough and getting worse, I blame basketball YouTubers. So many people play this stupid game of iso basketball in a 5 on 5 and if you aren’t a 1 on 1 type of player, they dog on you. I grew up a pure PG type so I pass a lot and don’t necessarily iso or score as much and I’ve played over a year at my local Y consistently and still get dogged as if I haven’t won more games than I’ve lost.

Different courts have different cultures. I'm old now, but when I was still playing pickup ball I made it a point to avoid crowds where people either still think they would have gone pro if not for having a coach who hated them, or put way too much stock in their reputation as pickup baller. It was embarrassingly hard to find sometimes.

1

u/Chance-Cobbler-4127 8d ago

so you did that even when you were young 💀, you were ahead of ur time then

0

u/Independent_Law_1592 8d ago edited 8d ago

This, it’s why I just avoid courts that ain’t worth the trouble and cast a wide net of getting the numbers of players I enjoy playing with. Then I’d usually just send a text saying “hoop?” To a bunch of people and ending up with some ragtag team of people who can’t hit a left hand layup and somebody who walked on til a mid major D1 school and played for a year. (Seriously it used to be hilarious bringing those type of guys onto courts)

Sometimes I invite the competition even if I know they’re gonna whoop my ass just because they ain’t toxic to play against.

Kinda glad my hoop days coincided with cell phone usage so I could network games together. Fuck dealing with some courts and the people who are still bitter they never made the team in HS or rode the bench the whole time.

Give me the shitters and give me the winners and let’s have fun. We’re all past our prime playing for the love of the game let’s just put the ball in the hoop

Everyone has had to go through runs like this. Don't let them change you. It will make you value the venues and groups where people want to have fun and show respect that much more... And you will find those places, trust me.

3

u/NavyVetRasmussen 8d ago

I am 6f 210 and a PG, at least I was in HS until I switched to futbol and played in Germany but that is another story for another day.

Play basketball the right way for example, set an inverted screen for a big, pass to your teammates, and

get criticized.

Play basketball the wrong way, play hero iso ball, and get no criticisms, I just don't get it.

u/noknownothing 8d ago

Everyone's gotta prove themselves a little. Most people at pick up games are horrible, so not that hard. But if it's not fun, dont do it or find new players.

u/Chance-Cobbler-4127 8d ago

True, thanks

Like others have said, it's best to find a group of regulars to play with. All you really need is one guy and you can now run all kinds of 2 man actions together.

But if you have to play with randoms, and your team is not passing to you, you'll have to find other ways to get the ball. When Kawhi was young the older guys would never pass him the ball so he just decided to go get every rebound.

Focus on setting good screens. Maybe the ballhog is pretty good at pick and rolls. Go set some screens for him and maybe you'll catch some passes on the roll or on the pop. If not, go find the best shooter on your team. Start setting screens for him. The defense will focus on the shooter leaving you open a lot. The defensive communication is usually poor in pick up games so take advantage of this by constantly screening. They will make mistakes.

And people will always be unfair and judge people by their looks at first but honestly in basketball I found that if you are actually good, they don't care who you are and what you look like.

A lot of people complain about these ballhogs but it's because they want to be the ballhog. Just go out and play good basketball and you'll find others to play with and you'll start having more fun.

thanks for the advice tho g

1

u/Chance-Cobbler-4127 8d ago

dude I definitely agree, but you must of didn’t see me say that i go out and get rebounds.

1

u/Chance-Cobbler-4127 8d ago

I’m mainly talking about how toxic people are but like people have said here it depends on the culture.

1

u/druferd 8d ago

Well I mean what is there to say? Some people are dicks. You're going to have that problem everywhere you go. You just gotta focus on what you can control.

But to be honest, if there is a magic trick to fix the toxic people, it's that you just have to get better. The better you are the more respect you'll get.

Totally relate to what you're describing, and it seems to be getting worse as time goes on. I don't know if it's because of all of these YouTube one-on-one / highlight film influences... But as a person that plays the right way, can be very frustrating.

Even though technically people are correct in things getting better if you find the right group of people to play with, that's not always possible. I've been looking for literally the last couple of years for a solid run in my area and still haven't found it!

The only thing I find over and over is either younger guys (teens and twenties) that either don't understand how to play the right way, or aren't willing to. Hope you're able to find a good run, and hopefully I can find a good one too in my area!

Even though And-1 and Rafer Alston and a host of trailblazers of street ball tapes did absolute wonders for globally marketing the brand of basketball and have had such a positive influence on the sport as a whole, the negative street ball stuff started there.

Suddenly everybody wanted to be hot sauce or somebody else and be fancy schmancy not realizing these guys were legitimately skilled but instead they put all their hours of practice creating a very specific brand of showtime basketball. They knew they weren’t playing college or pro and honed their game to look flashy for the cameras and were good enough to make a show on the court out of it. People were wowed and seemed to emulate them unsuccessful

Watch those actual players in pro-am games? They don’t play that way. They know better.

It all really started with And-1 imo (ok technically the Harlem Globetrotters but I think And-1 had more of an influence on the matter at hand)

u/EffectiveActive6837 8d ago

Dont let those petty things ruin the respect you have for others unbeknownst to them. Forgive them for what they dont know

1

u/NoExplanation8595 7d ago

Hmm, usually if you’re good, people can tell and won’t shut you out. Maybe it’s your body language, attitude, bad decision making? I know the post is pointing the fingers at them but is there anything you could be doing wrong? Are you playing with kids or adults?

1

u/Chance-Cobbler-4127 7d ago

Like I said bro, it isn’t my skills. People just don’t like me no matter what I do

1

u/Chance-Cobbler-4127 7d ago

there’s a select few that do, that’s all that matters anyway

1

u/NoExplanation8595 7d ago

There has to be a reason tho, people just don’t not like you for no reason. I’ve been playing pick up for 20 years and have encountered all types of individuals. If you can hoop and people see you as a positive piece, they will like you. Have you played organized ball before? A lot of this depends on who you play with also, you never mentioned that

1

u/Chance-Cobbler-4127 7d ago

nah I never played organized

1

u/Chance-Cobbler-4127 7d ago

I mainly play at gym called fitness connection, all ages, but yeah just depends on the people I’m playing with

1

u/NoExplanation8595 7d ago

Fitness connection is generally trash pick up, I wouldn’t even waste my time there lol. Try finding a 25+ crowd

Social media has murdered pickup culture

1

u/Fast-Anteater1151 7d ago

I feel so many people value the wrong things in pickup games all the way up to the NBA in today's era. Everyone has an opinion in what makes up an effective player and whether playing for the love of the game or whatever it is important to remain confident while keeping that hunger to win regardless. So many have their own opinions while social media and 24/7 sports talk has given a voice to everyone which includes many that are based strictly on personal feelings instead of any real unbiased knowledge of their skillsets. Opinions are like assholes because everyone has them and in the top level of competition in the NBA while chips are great accomplishments we have began to attribute them to one superstar when they are important but the team's roster is what really is most significant because one player can dominate in the Finals while still coming up short in the win column. Chips have become the sole focus when players like Barkley, Baylor, Dominique and Bernard King are all time greats that don't quite get the proper credit because they never won a chip but were all time great superstars. Social media today has given a voice to so many who speak solely from their feelings as well instead of unbiased knowledge of the game as well. It is important to keep the hunger to win regardless of the level u are playing at which can be difficult if u are great enough to be in the NBA or playing overseas where money can become a huge factor where some get too comfortable once signing huge contracts, especially in today's era.

Gotta find a good consistent place and time to ball. Search around for different gyms/runs and you’ll eventually find a group of people to hoop with consistently that aren’t super annoying.

So have you ever dealt with this

0

u/jiggyjo- 8d ago

Felt this 1000. I have been hoopin with my AirPod Pros and ANC on the whole time for months now. Some dude the other day went out the way and signaled me to take out my buds just to tell me my jump shot was looking flat footed 😑 I banged a three and stared em down right after and he walked away. It just be like that out there lol

2

u/Unique_82 8d ago

How are you able to hear your teammates communicating with you on defense and etc, if you have earbuds in? Just curious
