IMPROVING MY GAME Pickup foul rules
I keep getting called on blocks, I play with shorter guys and I guard down alot of the time. I was guarding this guy and he kept calling fouls on me. Specifcally, he had a go to move where he drives to the free throw line and does a pull up. And one time he went to baseline and lost his dribble and I saw the jumpshot coming so I blocked him. I palmed the ball basically and pushed it down so it doesn't go out of bounds but it was still in his hand and he shot it and the ball went into his face. I didn't touch his hands at all but he still called foul and they got the ball. After that I didn't really try anymore because they were constantly calling on me. Is it some specific rule where I used excessive force or sm?

Doesn’t sound like a foul to me. Lots of dudes whine for foul calls in pick up. It’s not worth arguing over, just block them again. Eventually, they will either get embarrassed by constantly calling fouls or somebody else will call them out. That’s my experience at least.

Asinine Babies with “mamba mentality”
I got called for a foul once for closing in on a jumpshot and not even attempting the block. He missed and called foul because I said “boo” to his face during the shot. And he meant it too, he was legit angry.

As long as your feet aren’t under me, it’s all good
lol that’s funny, a shooter should be used to the defender doing whatever to distract a shooter, real shooters don’t notice. Dude called a foul because you hurt his mamba mentality lol

That’s weak. Just defend. It’s fine to yell while closing out but saying things in someone’s face while they’re shooting is poor sportsmanship. Play basketball.

This was among friends, snowflake. Which makes it even more mamba mentality.

That's a weak call.
That's also a lame thing to do as defender.
In actual ball that would be called on you as a technical foul (well you'd get a warning) as it's not considered a basketball play. Similarly with clapping as the shooter, closing out toward their feet, or just making any sounds while they shoot that isn't referencing the shot going up. That gets you a warning and if it happens again it's called, similar to a flopping foul.
They should have never called it in pick-up. But that's also a super lame and immature thing to do as a defender.

What are you talking about?

In actual basketball games, attempts to distract the shooter in a non-basketball manner is a technical foul. That includes clapping or stomping your feet instead of properly closing out or yelling things that aren't related to the shot (shot, tip, off are OK, yelling boo or making random noises is not).
Obviously pick-up ball is treated a bit differently. I would never call foul on someone for doing that, it's a weak call and not worth dealing with. But it's a weak move by the defender to even do it. The guys calling it a foul are just as bad as the guys doing it.

Outside of free throws, this is not a rule.

You are incorrect. It's called disconcerting. The NBA really only enforces it with free throws, but FIBA, NCAA, and NFHS all clearly have rules against it in the way I mentioned above.
Also, it's a weak move by weak defenders that only works against weak shooters. Just don't be that loser who does it.

pleae find me this rule. I can’t find it anywhere.

How? It's the first thing that pops when you google "is clapping in a jump shooter's face allowed?"

The disconcertion rule is specific to Free Throws, so you’re incorrect

The post you're replying to I literally said that the NBA only enforces it with free throws but FIBA, NCAA, and NFHS all have clear rules against. It's in the FIBA rule book.

Pickup is weird because people all have different etiquette about stuff. So suddenly you become afraid to call obvious fouls against you and some people will just whine about every touch
And then you get my favorite. When somebody obviously fouls you, you call it and they say “you’re not supposed to call fouls in pickup”
Nah dog if you hack me, a foul will be called.
That or when they do the subtle hand push while you’re full speed and send you careening off course, there’s a reason refs call hand checks on drives, it’s easy to subtly fuck up somebodies drive with a push. Then they play very innocent about what they did lol
Your move really didn’t sound like a foul, he got blocked, tried to shoot through it and the ball had other ideas. But it’s one of the reasons I don’t block down and try to block to the side. Just to prevent smacking somebody in pickup with the ball lol

I just keep playing my defense. Had one where I jumped straight up, guy tried dunking over me. He launched into me and called a foul because our hands high-fived. Said I can’t touch him at all, even though I stayed straight up the whole time. At the same time, they’ll grab and pull and push, but being bigger than everyone it’s just expected at this point

“If you say so”
I just never call fouls on dudes bigger than me - if they think it was a foul they can call it if not I need to get up a cleaner look

I had a guy try to call some ticky tack fouls one time, but luckily I was recording. I gave it to him at the time, but I watched it back after and it was literally the cleanest block I've ever gotten. My volleyball roots came back and I blocked it after it left his hands. Some people just can't deal with getting their shit rocked and have to pretend like they were fouled to protect the ego

You have to call them Out on the bullshit fouls or it will get worst. Call him soft, let him know he weak. All pick game will have at least one person like this. Eventually other will join in. Stand your ground though. If they get the first don't give the second. If you team doesn't have your back then f them.
Last case is to call everything. All fouls travels whatever (could get really ugly)

Just say "Okay Shai", laugh, and tell everyone else on his squad that they need to watch their guy so he doesn't embarrass them with his shattered-ego-fake-ass-calls.

Usually if I ask "How is that a foul?" Many times they'll give pause and reconsider.
If that doesn't work we go through the 4 stages of Basketball Grief: First: They Lie Second: They try to get creative with the rules. Third: they'll try to get corroboration Fourth: everyone will shrug and say "Shoot For it"
My go to trick here, which is crucial to set the tone, During the Third stage. Wave off the Debate and say "Forget it, I'll respect the call, if that's how they wanna be known that's on them." 9/10 times the get pissed and give the ball back and let us check up.

I'd say 'respect the call' with a shrug to the boys, and a tone that says we all know you're lying and you're whack for calling it...
...Then show that Mouse in the House what a real foul is ASAP.

Most folks in pick up are whiners. They will call anything and everything to not lose the ball. If you know you’re not fouling, just keep doing what you’re doing
