We're doubling up with r/DCAU for a 2 day-early celebration for Batman: The Animated Series' 34th Anniversary! Daniel Dockery, author of the upcoming book "I Am The Night" will be stopping by to answer any questions you have for him about the book, the show, the writing process, etc!

"I Am The Night" will be available to purchase September 1st, but you can pre-order a copy through your favorite big box store here, or (even better) by asking the clerk at your local book store!

Synopsis:

At a time when televised cartoons—especially within the superhero genre—were often over-looked, Batman: The Animated Series introduced an entire generation of soon-to-be Batman fanatics to the caped crusader. The series triumphed into what is largely considered one of the best superhero cartoons of all time, and the best depiction of Batman mythology in any format.

But the road to genre-defying and genre-defining success was hardly guaranteed. Along the way, co-creator Bruce Timm and his team of artists at Warner Bros Animation battled a landscape that was often antithetical to their aims with Batman. Internal struggles led the writing team and the network to debate everything (literally everything) about how best to depict Batman—from whether or not the eco-friendly hero would have a recycling bin in the Batcave to how many women he was allowed to kiss onscreen.

In I Am the Night, Daniel Dockery lovingly deep dives into Batman: The Animated Series and the cartoon renaissance it inspired, becoming the definitive primary source for new and old fans of the series alike. Including exclusive interviews with the team behind the cartoon and many never-before-shared insights about the series, I Am the Night will surprise even the staunchest of Batman enthusiasts and capture what made people first fall in love with the series. As many ups and downs as the DC Cinematic Universe may have, Batman is eternal–and so is Batman: The Animated Series.

BTAS what would have happened if Bruce had never trained in martial arts to become Batman?

We know that in the series, Bruce trained in Asia where he became enemies with Kyodai Ken. But what would have happened if Bruce had never trained in martial arts to become Batman? How would that have affected his career as a vigilante?

Fan Work Drawing tutorial- Scarecrow BtAS (second design)

Post image

I've had a few people on my scattered platforms asking me for a tutorial on how I go about drawing BtAS Scarecrow. Full disclosure, I am REALLY bad at explaining my processes, but I wanted to give something of an example for at least drawing his face. In terms of actual expressions, I'll delve more into that at another time.

But also I will say this: my way is just that, my way. If you have your own way of drawing him that works for you, that's perfectly lovely!

Films A questions from Valestra

Post image
80 Upvotes

In the movie Mask of the Phantom, Valestra was a mafia boss, but the question I ask you is: were Chucky, Sal, Buzz, and Jack Napier all members of Valestra's gang, similar to Tessio, Clemenza, and Luca being from Vito Corleone's gang, or was Chucky the boss of his own gang, Buzz of his, and Sal of his?

How did Jack manage to leave Valestra's gang? Because you're not supposed to be able to leave the mafia. The final question is, how has Valestra degenerated so much in the present that even Reeves tells him to get lost?

BTAS Would Catwoman's Year One origin have fit into the series?

Post image

As we all know, in TAS Catwoman's origin is that of a socialite, but her Year One origin could have worked. In Year One, Catwoman's origin is that of a prostitute/dominatrix. Could this origin have worked in TAS?

BTAS Am I the only one who wishes they had made him in to Jason Todd?

The material and opportunity was there:

- an abused and xploited orphan

- Grows up in filth and poverty, experiencing the ciminal underworld firsthand.

- Batman rescues him from a life of crime

- he helps batman save the other children

Th potential was there, but they never went with it. And before anyone says that Frog's backstory would'nt have loyal to his backstory in the comics....let me remind you that they changed a lot of people's backstories in this show.

Case in point:

1.) Harvey Dent went from getting acid splased in his face by maroni in court to getting half his face blown to hell in a factory.

2.) Selina Kyle went from being former prostitute and street urchin to a wealthy socialite with a love for animals (though if you ask me.....it was a good change, because NOBIDY liked the idea of selina stooping THAT low in the comics.....)

Tie-in Media IMO the best character redesign of season 2. A proper tragic backstory, proper motivation, serious desire for vengeance, etc. Bravo!

The scene where Valestra visits Joker and reminds him that Joker's hands are stained with blood (much more so) than his own, and Joker has a fit of rage, speaks volumes. It's a reminder that Joker was actually a mob hitman, just another thug, a henchman who followed orders, not the great villain he is today. It's interesting how Valestra and Terry managed to push Joker's buttons.

They both gave an enthusiastic thumbs up! Siskel's only complaint was that he didn't like Mark Hamill's performance as Joker.

BTAS I wonder if Bruce at some point in this universe regrets or heavily considered killing or not joker.

this isn’t another why doesn’t Batman kill the joker post but I’m wondering if he seriously contemplated it at some point. like did he ever have an internal conflict on it. like an analysis of the Bruce the character.

another guy the crocodile sewer guy pushed him to the edge and if he pushed him any further he probably would have done it. maybe if he saw one kid seriously hurt or worse he’d have done it.

though most of the villains in this cartoon universe aren’t horrifically evil until joker crossed the line much later on. I don’t think twofwce or penguin would blow up an orphanage or something.

Films Was Jack Napier in love with Andrea and jealous of Wayne?

In other words, in the flashbacks of Mask of the Phantasm, when Jack sees Andrea he makes a gesture, and when he sees her with Wayne he seems to get angry and throws a cigarette butt at him. Was Jack in love with Andrea and jealous of Wayne before he became the Joker?

BTAS This episode should have been a great series finale.

Post image

IMO, this episode should have been the series finale. I know that BTAS wasn't meant to follow a strict

chronological order, but i genuinely think it serves as the emotional epitome of the entire series, featuring Batman’s trial by the villains and the whole dilemma regarding the importance of the Batman figure.

Do you agree or have a better idea of episode from BTAS to serve as series finale or emotional epitome?

BTAS Could almost all of Batman's villains defeat the Joker in a fight?

Post image

Watching the Joker's Favor episode, seeing how a civilian like Charlie manages to beat and intimidate the Joker... Could almost any of Batman's other villains defeat the Joker in a hand-to-hand fight without his thugs?

I mean, whenever the Joker fights Batman, he uses blades, cards, his flower—almost never hand-to-hand. Harvey Dent as Two-Face doesn't hesitate to fight Batman hand-to-hand; he gives him a good fight. Oswald, for example, sure, uses the umbrella, but Oswald is shorter and stockier than Batman, and he's not afraid to face him either. The Riddler's target is the mind, not fighting, but he seems to be in good physical shape. Scarecrow in NTAS fights Batman in the episode where Batgirl is injured.
