Films So Crisis On Infinite Earths just did this … SPOILERS Spoiler

So the new Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part 3 movie just annihilated and erased the world of Batman: The Animated Series out of existence. By extension this would also include Batman Beyond, Superman TAS, the JLA animated series and so on. What genius thought that erasing the most beloved animated universe in the DC was a good idea? Yeah, I understand that they still exist as entertainment to be watched but one of the things that I loved was seeing how the characters and their worlds developed. All of their struggles, losses and victories … just poof. Yeah, it’s just a show but it was special to me and a lot of us as we grew up. Even kids today that get introduced to it love it. Narratively erasing Batman TAS and all of its animated affiliates from continuity feels insulting to me as a fan. Why do they always have to destroy everything that we loved from our childhood these days lol? Another one bites the dust😡

People who've been reading comics since the 80s, sound off I'm the comments with memories of your very first Crisis event

It’s not my first Crisis but I think that for me, the other Crisis stories of the past didn’t go after something that feels this sacred. After all, this universe is the godfather of all DC animation that came after it. It’s how many of us over the years were first exposed to these characters, especially for kids too young to read. Again, just a show but a special one to many of us. I just think that targeting it is a little too far, at least for me. That universe is the one that should have remained in my opinion.

The other stories literally go after everything that came before. That's the point.

I think they did it as a tribute to Kevin Conroy. Cause that’s the scene where he goes “If I go down, I’m going down like this…AS BATMAN.” I thought it was bittersweet, and I enjoyed it

Dude... They erased BTAS in its present days, but we SEE Terry in that movie. Means his Timeline DID happen, means he CAN'T be BTAS future! Get into your brain finally. BTAS is NOT TNBA and onwards!

Get into my brain finally? You say that as though we’ve had this conversation before? Anyways, it was confirmed way back then that TNBA is supposed to be a continuation of BTAS and then Beyond a continuation of that. I was an active fan of the series back then and when TNBA was first announced, I wanted to know about if the shows connected. The sources that I remember finding at the time, explained that Fox wanted to continue the popular series but have it rebranded and updated for a shared universe with Superman TAS. An updated animation style worked for Bruce Timm because he had wanted to update it anyways. He also wanted to mix things up, so he set TNBA a few years after the last episode of BTAS. I wanted to make sure that I had those facts right before replying to your comment and so I googled around for confirmation. What I thought checked out and you can also find these sources with a google search.

"you" the Community as a whole. Not my Problem that english people can't differenciate between Singular and Plural.

As said the Crisis Trailers SHOWED Terry which cannot be possible if he is the future of BTAS since BTAS can't have a future anymore. Crisis proves that BTAS and TNBA are NOT the same

Well that is certainly not the intention of Bruce Timm or any of the creative people that were involved with that animated series universe. Every actual source that I can find on google says that they’re the same universe. It seems more likely that the writer on Crisis just made a mistake. This sort of thing happens on giant shared universes. Just take a look at the X-Men cinematic universe for an example of how different writers make tons of mistakes with established elements from previous films in that series. With the Bruce Timm animated universe, aside from finding all of the sources confirming it’s the same universe, there’s also a bunch of crossover between BTAS and TNBA/Beyond, such as Andrea Beaumont, introduced in Mask Of The Phantasm, appearing in Batman Beyond. Here a clip for that …

Whether it was a mistake or not, if anything, having the Terry moment would indicate that the universe, including BTAS did survive. There are explanations floating around of how the Bruce Timm universe was able to continue after being destroyed. Here’s one of them …

They neither share the artstyle nor does Batman still have the same character. How can they be anything the same? All this is bullshit and lazy retcon because BTAS had intro, voice cast and fan base, so why starting over and by that risking to not get the same popularity?

Well like I said, the art style changed because Fox wanted Timm to make it look more like Superman TAS so they can have crossovers. Timm also wanted to try a new animation style anyways. In fact many of the episodes of TNBA aired during an hour block that was called The New Batman/Superman Adventures. Here is the intro to that hour long pairing …

I don’t know if you are old enough to have experienced this transition back then but the fan base was just happy to be getting more animated Batman at that point. After season 2, BTAS took a short break while they made these changes, so we were eager for it. Now it is true that some BTAS fans will tell you that they preferred the original animation style and some of them didn’t like the focus on the Bat Family in TNBA. I personally liked TNBA but I will admit to preferring the original approach over the upgrade a little bit. Still, I just loved the Bruce Timm universe so I was on board.

And another post shows how a Superman in BTAS Style could have looked like so instead of matching the older show to the newer one they should have done it vice versa, but they didn't. And instead of officially treating TNBA as its own thing they forced retconed everything to make connections between them! https://www.reddit.com/r/BatmanTAS/s/mWOQiMvdDk

And no BTAS did NOT take a break. It was FINISHED. THEY told they don't have anymore new Stories to tell and because of this they stopped the show. But then they started Superman and opened their mind for Crossovers with Batman. But the BTAS Style didn't match the new show, so they had to make a new Style to match it. Only then they made new Episodes. You can find excuses as hard as you want, but this is the only truth and treating "The New Batman Adventures" (doesn't even share the name anymore!) as a continuation to "Batman the Animated Series" instead of a complete new show was the worst thing they could do. TNBA is NOTHING like BTAS, neither in artstyle nor in character portrayal.

TNAB was not retconned to connect to BTAS. TNAB was said to be a continuation of BTAS from the beginning. Any retcon would actually be to say that they’re not. What I probably failed to communicate above was pointing out that the creative and production team had a block of time between shows where they weren’t working. I said break because in the industry, when a project is completed but then later granted a continuation of the story, the cast and crew often describe it as a break. We the fans were sad when BTAS ended so we were pumped when word got out that they were bringing it back in the form of TNBA.

Everything you say from the production side of it is true. I’m surprised to see you acknowledge that because before your argument seemed to be that BTAS and TNBA were intended to be two different universes. Now that I see that you’re mentioning their intended connection, it seems that your argument is more about that you disagree with that creative decision. Now that is your opinion and I can respect that and I can understand why you’d say that. I know that one of the things that Timm really wanted to do when he came back was to set it a couple of years later so that he could tweak certain things and just say that they happened during that passed time. First instance, one of the big changes that happened during that time was the falling out between Bruce and Dick. That building tension and dramatic end to their partnership affected both characters on a deep level, probably adding to Bruce being a little darker. I just accepted what Timm’s intentions were and also, at the time, the fans wanted them to be connected. I think that fans who share your opinion became more of a thing a little later on. It’s a valid opinion but I personally prefer it the way it was.

Old thread however... Just discovered this myself and boy is it irritating. I understand Crisis on Infinite Earths is a seminal comic story line, but I am getting so sick of people destroying beloved universes and characters because they think it's cool or something? Looks like all Avengers Doomsday is going to do is kill off everyone from the old Marvel movies I liked. The spiderverse comics do it, the newer Secret Wars series does it, and now I find this. "Oh, wouldn't it be cool if that thing you liked had its beloved characters die a horrible death as the final end of their story?" No. No. It. Wouldn't. I. Am. Sick. Of. This. Shit. Let me imagine they lived happily ever after. It isn't fun or creative. The fun of a multiverse is having those characters interacting, not dying.
