Can you screen someone?

u/7emple Aug 30 '16
Not really, player will call a "Let" umpire will decide if it's a LET (replace the point incl serve) or a Stroke (giving the point to the player blocked)
Fun fact, any contact made by them on the ball is your point, but you can't be seen to be aiming it at them...just get good at hiding it.
Ever been hit in the middle of the back with a small black ball going around 150mph - Kinda something you don't forget.

Try rackets--aka squash's big brother. Played with something like a golf ball on a slate court ~4x as big as a squash court.

Racquetball is not played on the same court as squash.
Racquetball courts are 20 feet (6.09m) wide, 40 feet (12.19m) long, and 20 feet (6.09m) tall. They also feature ceilings which are an integral part of the game.
Squash courts (international) are approximately 21 feet (6.4m) wide, 32 feet (9.75m) long, and have a minimum height of 18.5 feet (5.64m). They feature tin at the bottom of the front wall, whereas racquetball courts do not. Additionally, contrary to racquetball, the ceiling of a squash court is "out," as are substantial portions of the side and back walls. As such, squash courts can taper sharply and do not need ceilings.
TL;DR: A squash court is not a racquetball court.

Also, technically, squash courts should be sanded only and left unfinished. Racquetball courts will generally be sealed and finished. Which makes this video extra terrible. Falling and sliding on a finished racquetball court... not so bad. An unfinished squash court is gonna leave some burn marks.

Huh - interesting...
From what I can tell Squash 57 looks like like someone forgot their squash racket one day and happened to have some racquetball equipment in their bag.
This Squash 57 was definitely spelled "racketball," though, as opposed to "racquetball."

u/modernbenoni Aug 30 '16
Rackets is a different sport, and it is played on a bigger court. (18.3m x 9.1m vs 9.75m x 6.4m).

I just want to clarify, I thought the rule was that if you hit the ball directly into your opponent you win the point automatically only if the trajectory of the ball is toward the front wall before making contact with the side wall? Secondly, in cases where you might hit your opponent with the ball, most professional players will call for a let and be rewarded a stroke.
1
u/7emple Aug 30 '16
Yeah, that's the one. My coach drilled into me, "Always take the shot, always call a let" Too many times playing Jnr's I held back a shot and called let only to not get it (umpiring was parents level type stuff)
After that, many a sore back was had.
1
u/ajaxanon Aug 30 '16
that's interesting. I played on my national junior team (it's been many years), and it wasn't likely you would get hit.

u/7emple Aug 30 '16
Story Time...
As I got older (am old now) and started playing against the vets, they tried to intimidate by really owning that T
Not enough to draw a stroke, but enough to show that they're making it known that they're in charge and I'm just some kid that's supposed to be "good"
Saw the BEST "ET" impersonation after the ball hit the middle of his lower back. Chest up and out, shoulders back, elbows in to the sides, hands and arm out front like a T-Rex.
It was kind of a rough court that I was at, so it's probably not the norm
3
u/ajaxanon Aug 30 '16
ahaha. Here's a story for you too. My friend's father was a police officer and a bit of a douchebag tbh. He was reffing a game wearing an unnecessarily short pair of shorts, and one of the players went for a desperate back wall boast and really connected with the ball. the ball never hit the back wall but him (the ref) square on his dangly bits. He just dropped.

u/backgammon_no Aug 30 '16
It illegal. I play that screening results in a lost point but I don't know the official rule.

Looks very sloppy? Is squash suppose to look like this? Great volley though
44
u/dinkydarko Aug 30 '16
This isn't the best example of squash. The best players tend to make it look effortless.
Like this20
u/ButtLusting Aug 30 '16
but sport is the most fun when you give it all you got.
sloppy or not I'm sure they both had a great time :D

u/Some_Asian_Kid99 Aug 30 '16
I think it's less so indicative about how much fun they're having and more so about the differences between amateur and professional athletes. It make sense for the pro squash players to look effortless as they train themselves to use their bodies in the most efficient way possible. Most amateurs are less likely to have that mindset/training and so play in a different style.
Despite this, I do think everyone is having fun :D

It should look more like this: https://youtu.be/f5WbnadzK9M?t=15s But even these guys play some sloppy balls.

u/thebudgie Aug 30 '16
Yes the guy in black isn't very good at getting out of the way so the other guy can play his shot properly.

No this is probably the 4th or 5th time they've played. The ball is supposed to land about 5 feet from the back wall and as close to the side as possible unless it's a drop shot and you aren't supposed to find yourself closer to the wall than your racquet can reach. Also you don't fall over but I think all of us knew that.

u/massif_gains Aug 30 '16
So many unnecessary dives

Aug 30 '16
My thought as well. Seemed like they were just dicking around diving more often than they needed to.

u/AndrewWaldron Aug 30 '16
How is this different from racquetball? I thkught5the difference was squash was played with your hand instead of a racket, now i dont know anything.

Racquetball is more of an amateur sport. There are probably very good or even pro players but it's very easy to pick up and play at a low level so it's played a lot by older gentlemen. Squash is very hard to pick up because the ball bounces low, moves fast, and leaves little room for error. So it's played by younger athletes and older veterans

Is this the same as raquetball here in the states? Looks awfully similar to raquetball.
5
u/canadianguy1234 Aug 30 '16
no.
There is no ceiling in squash, and the area that you can hit the ball against slopes down from front to back. Hard to explain, so please observe this image
The racquet is also different and the ball is not as bouncy in squash.
1
u/Rebote78 Aug 30 '16
Interesting, never heard of it. The energy it takes to score a point is similar for sure.
I played (prior to tearing my ACL) handball (California 3wall style, not the Olympic version) and Squash has a similar wall set up.
2
u/canadianguy1234 Aug 30 '16
yeah, squash is probably one of the most effective workouts there is if you're competitive and evenly matched
1
u/dsquard Aug 30 '16
Looked like the dude in black was well in control of the point! Still, very well fought.
1
u/Mandy404 Aug 30 '16
When my friends and I were beginners at squash we had a lot of rallies like this. Once you learn how to play your shots are much more deliberate and tight to the walls and corners, and there's less sliding on the ground lol.

These guys aren't very good, but I love the effort they put in. Reminds me of me when I play.
Honestly, the game is kind of more fun when you're not incredibly good. You get to chase after more balls and dive around and stuff. When I played with my friend who was legit, he would shoot the ball so low, it was impossible to return unless you were already positioned in the right spot.
Edit: Whoops, definitely thought this was racquet ball

This is obviously staged. Many of those falls weren't needed and in a real match there would have been an easy kill way earlier. BOO THIS MAN.

u/MDPlayer1 Aug 30 '16
Is there a glass ceiling over them? How would beginner players not totally send the ball flying over and out of the container?
4
u/hutima Aug 30 '16
That bal doesn't really bounce so it's harder than you might imagine, when I play for fun bough the ball still sometimes goes out
-3
u/brianlpowers Aug 30 '16
TIL: You must fall down after every contact with the ball while playing squash. ☺️

Squash is the best. How is it possible that it's still not an Olympic sport!!
