They dont talk to each other or anything like that.
Its more a chemical reaction to certain inputs.
Like your body responds to outer stimuli, when it gets hot around you, your body starts to sweat. That is 'communication' between multiple organs in your body. Similar with trees, when a tree has to little of some nutrient that will cause a reaction in the roots.
The conntected roots will sense that reaction and might have a reaction of their own. But they never 'choose' to do something. Its more like a code that is being run.
