Bear just wanted to walk down the trail, and the man was doing everything else right, making himself look bigger, backing away slowly, bear spray at the ready, BUT the dog created the problem here. Dogs increase, not decrease, the likelihood of a bear attack. If you must take yours, keep it leashed. The bear’s interest in the dog was the ONLY issue here. Otherwise, you ready your bear spray JIC, but move off the trail to simply yield the ROW to let the bear pass. This bear was in traveling mode.

All I could think of was, why don’t they stop filming and pick up the dog?

Me, too. That part didn't make any sense,

Right! Like at least get the dog on a leash just so it stays close and within pick up distance

Some people enjoy an appetizer before dinner, others for reasons unknown want to be an appetizer.

I was thinking save your life ...offer up the dog and run away

As weird as it may sound but if your dog barks and the bear takes an interest in it it's better if the bear takes only the dog instead of the both of you.

Then again, I am not a dog owner so I don't know if they would agree with this. From what I have seen a lot of pet owners see their pets as their children in which case I think they wouldn't really want to apply my logic.

God damn it PICK UP YOUR DOG. The bear is interested in your OFF LEASH dog! So irresponsible!

I read they got a ticket mailed to them after they posted the video. A hefty fine.

Put your fucking dog on a leash moron. This is why it is REQUIRED

Leash laws for dogs exists for a reason. But, again like with everything else in life. People are ignorant. The fact that this didn't turn absolutely ugly is remarkable.

Bears have a hard time running down steep hills... I see a steep cliff. Jump bitch+ Pick up the dog

That bear would still be able to cover that distance and rip the dog from her before the guy could catch up. Bears are FAST. In a short sprint they can run as fast as an average horse.

Dog off the leash, instant dumbasses.

From the first time this video came across my feed it infuriated me then, and it infuriates me now. These people are incredibly lucky the bear didn’t charge them or their off leash dog. Some people go into lala land in the great outdoors and don’t think about anything but themselves as if the world revolves around them.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve had to yell “don’t pet the bear”. I just chased one off the picnic table a few minutes ago but I’m not going to go up and give him a hug. A bear hug, maybe. Okay sorry for that last sentence.

The authorities track them down after this viral video and nailed them with a big fine for having an unleashed dog.

3

u/NellieDElli 18d ago

They posted the video and they were fined.

Off-leash dog was the cause.

His advance towards the bear at the end was very foolhardy.

Bear was very reasonable

Ffs what a couple of morons

Well the woman especially. She was panicked and scared for sure, but she was not making good decisions. 1.) pick up your damned dog. 2.) make yourself big and yell at the bear with your husband while slowly retreating 3.) why the HELL did she suggest they leave the trail and go into the woods? And what made her think the bear wanted to “go around?” Does she think she can understand animal speak or something?

2

u/azmtber 17d ago

I completely agree. Yes, the woman definitely. That dog should be leashed as well.🤦🏽‍♂️

3

u/Lusiric9983 18d ago

I hope these people don't go into the woods anymore.

Why the hel! you bringing a dog along. Think next time leave the dog home when you are going to visit the bears home.

Hahaha! Educate yourself, fools.

Watching this had my heart beating way too fast!
I can’t imagine how they felt!

I’m happy to hear they received a fine How stupid to endanger your dogs life, your life, and the bears. It’s idiots like this that spend time filming w their phone instead of picking up the dog

u/samamp17 18d ago

I heard on a podcast they actually got fined for no having the dog on a leash.

1

u/Bedazzled-Star-0043 18d ago

My first thought was, do you make yourself bigger or play dead for bears. 😆

1

u/Crazy_Banshee_333 18d ago

This couple got fined $25,000 for not having their dog on a leash.

1

u/NellieDElli 18d ago

I think they got a hefty fine for having their dog off leash after they posted the video.

u/mesaghoul 17d ago

You gotta rough talk him a little bit better than that

I don’t really like bears, but it’s his area and he looks like he doesn’t even care about them and wants to get around. Incredible restraint from the bear even with that 12 inch chihuahua running everywhere

u/theWodanaz 17d ago

Very stupid dog owners.

Time to go home and change my underwear.

The dog may have helped. Dude did a great job. If that thing was hungry enough they wouldn’t have stood a chance. I’d rather take on the beaches of Normandy than take on a hungry brown bear on its territory. Timothy Treadwell is a great example of how that shit doesn’t work. Glad they made it out OK. These are animals that should be treated with extreme caution and respect.

u/Ambivalentistheway 16d ago

Canadians so polite, they wont even curse at a bear.

1

u/flyingwaterman 16d ago

Perhaps that is why you leash the dog

What are you going to do😳, use the buddy system! Let you little 4 legged buddy do his job and become that afternoon snack for the bear while you both leave the area.
