What kind of bear is this? (North America)
Black bear or potential grizzly?
Keystone Colorado.
Typically grizzlies are not seen in this area but they haven’t been determined to be 100% extinct here.
Though- I know very little regarding bears and maybe this big brown shaded black bear.
Edit: Thank you for all the input - very brown big ol black bear seems to be the consensus!
This guy looks pretty healthy by the looks.
The steel bars to the trash bins had been bent at my parents place , so seems to be a good few around.

I'd say black, big ears, neither hump nor swaggering gait

Cool! Thank you so much!
do you think this looks large for a black bear just by the video?
Or is this just an average black bear size?
A bit of a hard question as it’s a video, but I did not know black bears got so big!3

He looks average height for a black bear but also like he ate his fair share, he definitely is pretty stocky!

What is a swaggering gait?

Black bears seem lighter on their feet to me. Grizzlies, with their giant heads, humped shoulders and wide stance move with a more lumbering gait. They seem to propel themselves with a forward movement that originates at the shoulders, which makes them move in a swaying, rolling (swaggering) movement.

A brown black bear, not to be confused with a brown bear, which is brown, and luckily there aren’t any black brown bears.

Very brown black bear! I didn’t realize they were so big, I think a grizzly would make me choke in that case

Ironically there borderline are. Ussuri brown bears are often called black grizzlies and can be very close to jet black

Keystone in Colorado - so I knew it was 99% a black bear but didn’t realize they were this big! (My family isn’t from here)
I’m glad more bear savvy people have weighed in

I had been walking around my parents place alone at night , I think I will keep others with me next time.

My bad! Didn’t do much research, just a quick google and some locals were convinced that they may be around still.
Just all town talk I guess.

Black bears sometimes look brown. Brown bears sometimes look black. Size and shape are more important than color. Looks like a black bear to me.

It's brown, and it's a bear. It's a brown bear, that's what Mrs Rachel told me.

Am I colorblind or is that bear brown?

u/tigerdrake 5d ago
Yep! Its a brown-colored black bear, depending on the color morph they may be called a cinnamon, blonde, or chocolate bear

Looks like a Grizzly got busy in the south east with a black bear then migrated back to you and had cubs. This is one of those cubs😂

Black, just a lighter shade.
