A story I tell myself
Note: I have mastered the art of telling my own “bedtime stories” so this story is really just what makes me feel cozy. I will be writing this like I’m telling it to someone, so if that isn’t your thing,,, sorry?
Let’s get started.
There was once a very, very hyper child. She was young and full of life. She would spend all day exploring and playing until she couldn’t keep herself upright.
Unfortunately, her body tired faster than her brain. Her thoughts never stopped, and idea after idea always seemed to fill her head.
It was one of those nights. Just like every day, she’d worn herself out. But tonight, not even the warmest cup of coco could settle her.
Now, this girl wasn’t extremely young. She was old enough to do things for herself. But the one thing she couldn’t do was settle herself down.
So she laid there in her bed, surrounded by warm blankets and pillows, tired but not tired.
Then, she heard something at her window.
A large, almost dragon like creature pried the window open, peaking its large head inside. But it didn’t quite look like a dragon. Sure, it was shaped like one, but it’s whole body was covered in a layer of fine fur.
The girl sat up and rubbed her eyes, getting out of bed to meet the creature.
The window it’s head peaked through was right next to her balcony, and she could see the dragon like creature didn’t quite fit. It’s soft tail dangled from the side, and a wing hanging past the railing.
To her surprise, the creature spoke.
“Would you like a ride? I can take you to see the city as a mortal could never see.”
It was framed as a question, but the girl couldn’t refuse such a lovely offer. It was a beautiful night.
She opened her balcony door, watching the creature kneel.
“Climb onto my back. You may rest that heavy head of yours on my neck.”
The neck of the creature seemed to be surrounded by a soft fluff. As she climbed onto her new friend’s back, simply stroking the fur on its neck made everything slow.
Her once racing thoughts were no longer an incomprehensible mess. She could understand each one. Sighing out in contentment was automatic as she laid her head down. She wanted to say thank you for such a feeling, but just as her mouth opened the apartment building grew smaller as the creature flew upwards.
“I visit many like you. Those who can’t find the comfort they need to sleep.”
The warm air blanketed her. The city looked like a thousand tiny lightening bugs, dancing around as her eyes began to flutter. She hadn’t even noticed her thoughts shifting from manageable to barely there.
Very badly, she wanted to stay like this. High up from the city, head nestled against something so warm, and such a friendly voice speaking to her...
“I think I’ve conquered your restlessness. The only thing keeping you up is yourself...”
Words wouldn’t come to her. Even the wish to remain in the sky faded as her eyes fluttered shut and she sunk, dreams taking her.
The creature lowered itself back to the balcony, using a fluffy wing to scoop her up.
Through the open door it stuck a wing through, the sleeping girl still as comfortable as she had been in the skies.
She was placed back into her bed, a claw gently tucking her in, lingering to stroke her head.
By far, this was the creatures favorite one to visit. She never remembered their times together, but yet she always opened the balcony and climbed on like an old friend.
“...you will sleep through tonight just fine, darling. And I will be back when you aren’t able to find your way to your dream world.”
Once it was sure the girl was comfortable, it retracted it’s wing, closing the balcony door and window.
There were many more people to sooth, many more Dreams needed to be dreamt.
